To All New Grandparents...Harvey Karp, I Love You!

Ranked #8,299 in Parenting & Kids, #296,042 overall

Harvey Karp, I Love YOU! ...or in others words, "I Just Became A Grandmother Groupie, Thanks To My Children".

On December 31st, my first grandchild was born. Her name is Sienna and she weighed slightly over 7 pounds. Her jet black hair falls naturally into a perfect pixie cut and her eyes are pale blue. Did I happen to mention she's the most precious child in the world?

When I went to visit my children, just after her birth, I was more than excited. It had been more than 35 years since I had cared for a tiny infant and my memory of the details had become a bit more than slightly blurred. What I learned from my children was most astonishing!

After my arrival, one of the first things my son did was to sit me down on the couch and put on "The Happiest Baby On The Block" DVD by Dr. Harvey Karp. I watched with fascination. It brought back all of that anxiety and fear I had felt as a new mother, oh so many years ago.

What I did recall was how absolutely unprepared I had been to care for an infant. I was the youngest in my family and we never lived close to other cousins and no one I knew had a baby. How on earth did that happen?

I certainly wish I had had these clear and simple techniques and all of the valuable information prior to bringing my son home from the hospital. It will make your experience as new parents easier and far more joyful. I promise.

What Dr. Karp Noticed Over The Years About New Parents And Their Infants

Over the span of 30 years, Dr. Karp began to observe the responses in babies and new parents. Many new parents were frustrated and exhausted from staying up for hours with colicky, screaming babies. This just didn't exist in other cultures around the world.

He also noticed that there is a vast difference in the brain of a 3 month old infant and a newborn and decided that there was a missing 4th trimester. Although the infant is born after a nine month gestation period, they really needed more time. The physical size of the uterus cannot accommodate a fetus any longer, therefore, the infant is born after nine month.

He felt that recreating the environment of the womb, only outside of the mother's body, was necessary for the wellbeing and comfort of the infant. First, he had to study the environment inside of the womb to do this.

Techniques For Creating This New Environment

Home Away From Home For The New Babe, Outside Of The Womb

Inside the womb, the fetus hears a constant roar, similar to what a vacuum cleaner or a hair dryer sounds to us. This is the sound of blood rushing through the mother's arteries. Most of the day, the mother is in motion, either walking or engaged in some other kind of movement, such as riding, walking up stairs or even jogging.

The womb is a very confined space for the fetus. There is a feeling of warmth and cuddling or "swaddling". Dr. Karp created the the "5 S's" to explain what is needed to recreate this environment to comfort and calm the newborn.

A Little About Dr. Karp

Dr. Harvey Karp is a renowned pediatrician and child development specialist. He has taught childcare for over 30 years and is an authority on children's environmental health and breastfeeding.

Currently, he spends most of his time traveling across the country lecturing to the medical community and to the public on how parents can successfully meet the needs of their children.

#1 SWADDLING

Secure swaddling with a light blanket provides the newborn with continuous touching and support, similar to the confinement inside the womb.

Blankets made with velcro pieces that helps keep the blanket secure are now made specifically for swaddling. By watching the demonstration on the DVD, you can learn to do this with any lightweight baby blanket.

#2 SIDE OR STOMACH POSITION

Place your baby, while holding his or her head in your left hand and supporting the baby's body along the length of your arm, either on the the baby's left side, to assist in digestion, or on the baby's stomach for reassuring support.

Support your arm holding the baby on your legs and softly jiggle the baby's head to create a rhythmic motion. Once the baby is asleep, put the baby back in the crib on his or her back.

#3 SHUSHING

Shushing sounds imitate the sounds in the womb made by blood flowing through the mother's arteries. To quiet a crying infant, place your mouth close to her ear and make a loud but long drawn out shushing sound.

Continue making the shushing sound until the baby begins to quiet. At this point, place the baby on his or her side or stomach and create the rhythmic motion described above, until the baby has been calmed and falls asleep.

White noise can also be replicated by using the sounds of a vacuum cleaner, hair dryer, fan, radio static or any white noise.

#4 SWINGING

The fetus is accustomed to ever present motion while still in the womb, which is very calming. At birth, this motion suddenly stops leaving the newborn disoriented. Rocking, swinging motion, riding in a car or any other constant movement recreates this environment for the infant.

There are some terrific new swinging seats made today. There's one on the market that can be lifted out and is interchangeable for use as a car seat or in a stroller. It also has music and sounds of rain, etc.

#5 SUCKING

Sucking has a calming effect on the nervous system and releases natural chemicals within the brain. This natural response can be recreated during breast feeding, bottle feeding or with a pacifier or your finger.

One of my favorite pictures of my son is of him passed out - for the first time in two weeks - laying across my SIL's arm in the 'side' position. His little arms are dangling and he's just drooling away.

Great tips for new parents!
