Grants For Business Start Up

There are lots of myths about government grants for business start ups. In this article, I want to take five of the most common misconceptions and blow them up! As we'll see, getting a grant for a business start up is much easier than you might think...if you know the right way to go about it.

Myth 1 - Grants are just for big business

Wrong! The US Government offers over 1000 different grant programs at any one time. Sure, some of those are designed for big business, but according to their own statistics, only about a quarter of business grants go to companies that have more than 100 employees. So that leaves three quarters of all grant programs for people like us - individuals who want to start a new business.

Myth 2 - Business Start Up Grants have to be paid back

No! If grants had to be paid back, they'd be called loans, and the government wouldn't be doing any more to help small business than the average high street bank. It's in the governments interest for your business to do well. The more money you make, the more tax you pay back into the system, and the better off the economy becomes. That's why grants really are free money to help you get started. Everybody wins!

Myth 3 - Business grants only apply to high-tech or cutting edge business ideas

In fact most grants are actually given to traditional businesses than to high-tech companies. Agriculture, retail, catering, transport companies - any kind of business idea you might have can be eligible for government money to help you get going. Of course, high tech business have grants to suit them as well. In short, whatever business idea you might have, there's a grant for you.

Myth 4 - If I miss out on a government grant, I've missed out for good

Not at all. There are new grant programs started almost every day. The government wants to encourage business in all sorts of industries. There are literally thousands of grant programs, and with new ones being created all the time, there is something available to you right now - today!

Myth 5 - If I get a grant, it'll only be small and wont really help me

Well that depends on your definition of small. Here's a random example: This week there's a new grant program announced to help women create their own businesses. The maximum amount given to each person awarded this grand is $150,000 (one hundred and fifty thousand US dollars). Do you think you could start a business with $150k to get you going? This is just one example picked at random, from new grants announced just this week. And every week there are more new grants like this!

How To Get Your Free Money To Start A Business

As you can see - if you have a business idea - the government wants to give you money.

There is just one catch. With so many grants available, finding the best opportunities CAN be a bit of a nightmare. In fact, in their efforts to make as much money available to as many people as they can, the government have ended up making things a bit too complicated for their own good.

Fortunately, there are some brilliant websites around that will lead you through the mess, and find the best sources of free government money for your business idea.

Here are just a couple of great sites to get you started:
