Thanks for this useful lens. I am moving much further north and was worried I wouldn't be able to grow vines, but your article has given me hope!

    I enjoy growing grapes. Thanks!
  • J-Ellen May 8, 2012 @ 10:55 am | delete
My grapes did fairly well last year, but are still tiny in size of fruit. After much pruning this winter, I'm hoping to see greater growth and production of fruit on the arbor. Note: I'm short, so my arbor is a bit shorter than others would build. But it's nice to be able to reach.
    Nice lens.

We've had a grape arbour for the last 8 years or so in our garden in central France. I think we've been following most of your advice - by accident. :)
  • DiscoverWithAndy Apr 29, 2012 @ 9:46 am | delete
It always surprises me how many arbors I see without plants growing on them. It's not the structure we're supposed to admire (or that will give us shade..) it's the plants that grow on it! Sometimes the mind of the average American is truly bewildering.

Your pictures and lens brings back wonderful childhood memories of our family grape arbor. Concord, red and green grapes. I used to sit and eat them from the vine. Mom made jelly from them so we always had grapes in one form or another. I would like to have my own arbor one day as well. Thanks for such useful information about pruning them.

Good info about growing and pruning, but not much about the actual arbor. I'd love to see more about how build the arbor, how to get the grapes to grow on it, how to plant them, etc.

Gosh, I'd love to see step-by-step instructions for having a grape arbor with pictures. I've thought about doing a jasmine arbor in my backyard, but the jasmine is growing ever so slowly.

I'm really bad about pruning my grapes, and the birds take a lot of the fruit, but it's just so nice to have them growing here in the cold northeast - sitting under the grape arbour, sheltered from the wind, basking in late autumn sun, ah, it doesn't get better!

I just started my grapevine about 18 months ago, and got just a few unripened grapes last year. I pruned well, and this year it has gone mad - I am wondering whether I will have a hundred half-ripe bunches of grapes by the end of the season, instead of a few decent bunches. Too soon to tell, but I do wonder whether I need to prune some of them. Can anyone advise me please? I live in London and have only recently discovered that you can grow grapes successfully in a temperate climate.
Here's a late angel blessing for you

I'd never really thought of growing grapes. But I hesitate: I think our possums will eat the lot, and we really don't need to attract more possums... ;-)

I've never grown grapes, for me it is kiwis. Most people don't realize the importance of proper pruning, or think if they trim a little they have pruned. You did a wonderful job explaining the true pruning process to all. Thank you for this lens. 5*s, lensrolling and favoriting.

Thanks:) We have been having a hard time finding good info on growing grapes - maybe this year our yield will be better!
  • Mary_Arnold Dec 6, 2008 @ 7:31 am | delete
Thanks for the information. I have grown my own grapes but I've never pruned them. I always knew I needed to but didn't know want to mess up a good thing. I did manage for two years now to get enough grapes to make a 3 gallon batch of wine. They are however hard to pick in the tangled up branches. I'm getting out there and pruning this year. I'm not sure if Feb works for me here in Michigan.
  • only1bub Nov 26, 2008 @ 10:31 pm | delete
Hey thanks! I've been searching for how to prune my grape vines for the last 20 minutes - yours was the clearest answer I could find! And good tip on clearing some of the leaves away for fruit to ripen - I never even thought of that.

Thanks so much for this info! I grew up with a huge backyard garden, and I mean huge. We only had grass to border the garden. Plus cherry and lemon trees, and 2 grape arbors. Grapes are still there, we dont own home anymore. I want to recreate that in my backyard. What are your favorite varieties?
  • Graceonline Nov 5, 2007 @ 2:03 am | delete
Mmmm. The delicious scent and taste of purple grapes warm from the vine, sour skins with the sweetest fruit inside. The arbor cooled the yard on a summer day and gave shady respite to a shy girl, tired of playing with the neighborhood gang. Thanks the for the memory jolt.

Another cool lens, Gypsy! There's a small winery near me that lets volunteers help with their pruning and harvesting. You get training, lunch and plenty of wine in exchange for the labor. Good deal for folks new to growing grapes. What is GDD?
