Grapefruit Warning....

This is a health warning for women who eat grapefruit....

details below....

Risk of developing breast cancer

A study by US scientists in July 2007 showed that eating grapefruit every day could raise the risk of developing breast cancer by almost a third.

The fruit is thought to boost levels of oestrogen - This is the hormone associated with a higher risk of the disease.

The research found that women who ate one quarter of a grapefruit or more every day had a higher risk of breast cancer than those who did not eat the fruit at all.

A molecule called cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) is involved in metabolising oestrogen hormones. Grapefruit may boost blood oestrogen levels by inhibiting this molecule, allowing the hormones to build up.

It is well established that oestrogen is associated with breast cancer risk. Therefore, if grapefruit intake affects oestrogen metabolism leading to higher circulating levels, then it is biologically plausible that regular intake of grapefruit would increase a woman's risk of breast cancer.

There are lots of useful links on this page from articles on this study to healthy eating diets and superfoods that help to eliminate sickness. Check them out below.

A study has shown that eating more fibre, particularly cereal foods, is associated with a lower risk of developing breast cancer in pre-menopausal women.

It is good to raise awareness to this issue and you are right. Any one with estrogen related breast cancer should stay well away from grapefruit.

At the same time, your article refers to a study published in the British Journal Of Cancer. A short while later, another study was published in the same journal conducted over a similar number of patients and over a number of years which did not find any link between grapefruit and cancer.

And one more thing to make things even more confusing, right about the time of the publication of the first article, researchers at the University of Chicago reported that patients taking lapanitib, a breast cancer drug with a fatty meal and grapefruit juice could get five time the benefit of the drugs.

As a matter of information, lapanitib is considered a promising breast cancer medication following in the foot steps of herceptin which only women with HER2 node positive (estrogen dependent breast cancer) could take.
