Hi Greekgeek, I found this lens really useful. I have been searching the whole internet to align images in my lenses. I know how to write the code, but I always forget the tags. Your explanation is mind-blowing. Thank you so much, see ya around!
  • SoundFinance May 21, 2012 @ 10:50 pm | delete
How do you put two or more pictures and a caption under each picture please?
  • Greekgeek May 23, 2012 @ 1:13 am | delete
That's complicated enough that I wound up making a separate tutorial... see if this helps (linking right to the code template):

    http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-align-images-side-by-side#module150704941

If you don't need links, just take the part out. And you can increase the width from 180 pixels if you want; just make sure you increase the width of the paragraphs AND the images the same amount.
  • SoundFinance May 20, 2012 @ 6:55 pm | delete

I have an image with float:right and I want start the next paragraph underneath it but aligned left as normal leaving a blank space above the text on the left and the image on the right.
  • Greekgeek Oct 20, 2011 @ 9:43 am | delete
Ah, there's one I can answer! Start the next paragraph with

to say, "don't let anything float next to this."
  • Morgannafay Oct 18, 2011 @ 2:37 pm | delete
Now hopefully my zazzle stuff won't look dorky thanks to you. lol. Thank you Greekgeek! I was about to scream at my computer for not being able to put my image credits at the bottom of my pic. It would always want to go the way of the text I was trying to put beside it.

Thank you! Just bookmarked this page as I will be using it a lot. Just FYI, your lens on how to align images doesn't link correctly to this page. Looks like you forgot to take "workshop" out of the link, so I had to manually type it in omitting that.

How we can add the two images side by side through html coding and we need a text between both the images
  • Greekgeek Sep 14, 2011 @ 1:07 am | delete
Oh, that's tricky. Try this. Hopefully, it'll put the first image all the way on the left, the second image all the way on the right, and then the text will fill the space between them:

    <img src="left image URL" style="float: left; margin-right: 10px;"><img src="right image URL" style="float: right; margin-left: 10px;"> TEXT GOES HERE.

  • Greekgeek Sep 5, 2011 @ 12:50 am | delete
George -- I approved your comment, but it's still not showing. If you want to have two images left-aligned, one above the other, in a block, with the text flowing around both of them, what you do is tuck them inside a paragraph whose width is set to be the width of the larger of the two of them -- and no more! Then you set that paragraph to float left. In that way, the paragraph will be a "floaty box" containing the two images -- and they'll wrap one above the other, because the width makes the paragraph too narrow for them side by side.

Let me see if this thing lets me type code in a reply box. This is what I mean:

[image code for first image] [image code for second image]

The margin is just to give a little buffer around the "box" -- the paragraph -- which holds the images, so the text won't fill in bang up against the graphics. I used 200 pixels as the width in my example; set that number to the width of the larger of the two images. (It will look neater if they're both the same width; otherwise there will be a bit of blank space to the right of the narrower one.)
  • George Sep 5, 2011 @ 12:23 am | delete
Great article. I just want to know something too. I know to text wrap images around text but how do i text wrap 2 images one below the other both left aligned around the text. I need a code that puts an image below another image aligned to the left. So that all the images are present one below the other left aligned and the text are on the right. Any kind of help would be appreciated. Thanks :-)

  • Greekgeek May 18, 2011 @ 12:54 pm | delete
Hi, jeevsud! It's hard to troubleshoot in a guestbook, so how about you post the code that's giving you trouble in SquidU's help forum (go to "Help & Tips" at the top of this page, pick "SquidU", go to the forums and then go to the Help forum).

Tell us what you're trying to do, show us the code that's not working, and maybe we'll be able to find the problem. Sorry my page wasn't enough to get it working for you!

  • Greekgeek May 13, 2011 @ 3:48 pm | delete
I've finally got almost everything on this page memorized, but one of the reasons I originally wrote this page (and another I've got on CSS) is so I could look something up when I forgot how to do it. :D

Invaluable information. Thank you! Do you have any tips adding different images in a tile or wall effect, like a block of slightly larger than thumbnail size pictures?
  • Greekgeek Feb 17, 2011 @ 7:48 pm | delete
In general, I would just add a "float: left;" to the style of each image, which makes it behave like the letters in a line of text, each going as far left as there is room, then filling in the available space to the right of the one next to it. When they run out of room horizontally, the next float: left image would have to go onto a new line, again, just like the letters of a line of text only larger. To force a "line break," so to speak, one would make the style of the first image on the new row to be:

    style="float: left; clear: left;"

meaning "go all the way to the left, and if there's something already there, go onto to the next line."

I've got a few templates for multi-image Zazzle galleries here which could be adapted for regular graphics:

    http://www.squidoo.com/free-graphics-creative-commons-zazzle/132519351-Zazzle-Referral-Templates

In particular, the multi-image gallery is useful. Except that I made every graphic a linked graphic to get the referral in, so it's a little more complex than needed.

    Hi,

    Gotta problem here.

I copied below code from How to Add Background Images & paste it into my Notepad.

    And saved it as FILENAME.HTML
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work when it's D-clicked..

But removing -left part from padding-left: seems to work for me.

Here is the new code then:

    Any way,Great Lesson

    Thank you very much.

    God Bless!
  • Greekgeek Feb 4, 2011 @ 11:55 pm | delete
Hmmmm. Notepad may not understand all the CSS commands that web browsers do. padding-left is a normal CSS command.

I don't have Notepad, so I can't test it. But if that works for you, great!

Just keep in mind that the padding command all by itself puts padding on all four sides of your text, in that case, not just on the left. You may find that looks odd in some circumstances.

  • girlfriendfactory Aug 22, 2010 @ 11:44 pm | delete
You did such a great job with these tips! CSS can be tricky when it's inline/embedded vs. even internal, and certainly when you can use external, which is the easiest for me. Keeping track of the nesting and which tags support which styles can be a real pain. I love your color coded examples, too! Very nice!
  • Greekgeek Aug 29, 2010 @ 4:10 pm | delete
I wish we could use Stylesheets, but at least Squidoo lets us use inline styles. Take a gander at the source code for a lens sometimes. It's SCARY. Even the stylesheets are monsters!
  • kiwisoutback Aug 22, 2010 @ 6:33 pm | delete
I'm definitely going to be using the hint about using captions. I've used the background code before too, though it's hard to position it just right unless you're using a pattern. Photos don't usually work quite as well and seem to show up differently in different browsers.
  • sponias Aug 9, 2010 @ 9:10 pm | delete

  • CherylK Nov 11, 2009 @ 12:50 pm | delete
I am almost giddy with excitement! This is such a good reference...I came here from your CSS Codes: Easy Tutorial and Quick Reference Guide which is just awesome. You are so good at making this stuff easy to understand. I just love CSS & HTML but still know so little about them that reference material is just so important. So thanks for sharing. Am adding both of them to my favorite Squidoo references lens.

And good luck on your dissertation. How you have time for anything else is beyond me.
  • Greekgeek Nov 4, 2009 @ 12:43 am | in reply to LearningIsFun | delete
Sorry I'm taking so long to reply -- dissertation writing has eaten me! I'm afraid the Introduction Module is particularly cranky about positioning since it has its own ideas about the Lens Graphic.

I do not have time to experiment, but I have suggestions that might help.
First, instead of <p align=left> or right, try <p style="float: left; width: 200px;"> or right for your text. End the floaty paragraph with </p> I made a random guess at the width in pixels. Width may not be necessary, but specifying a narrow paragraph sometimes helps with side-by-side layout.
Second, you MAY be able to force Squidoo to stop doing side-by-side and putting the caption UNDER the lens graphic with:
<p style="clear: left;"> which means, "Do NOT let any page element float to the left of this paragraph...start it on its own line."

I'm afraid these may not be enough to solve your problem, but they're two more tools to try. Good luck!
  • Norma_Budden Oct 17, 2009 @ 10:41 pm | delete
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Need I say more?
  • LearningIsFun Oct 1, 2009 @ 2:27 pm | delete
I've left you a message here before to say what a help your lens has been to me. However, I wondered if you could help me with this problem. I tried the SquidU help forum but no luck. It's about using the code you suggested in this lens to put my own image in the introduction module with copyright information below and getting it to float left with the text aligned beside it. If I put the command in it floats in the centre, leaving a nasty gap on the left. I can get it to float right, but it leaves a space where the automatic image should be and indents the text round the grey automatic box. This is the code I am using (taken from you!):
    copyright info
How do I get the image and copyright info to float left with text aligned beside it in the introduction module? Thanks

Comment: I just struggled for 1 hour trying to center images on this page:

    http://www.squidoo.com/FootedPajamas

It would not work, was always going to the right of the page. Couldn't figure it out. Then I realized that the lens was NOT set to Max. I clicked the Max tab, and the lenses centered just fine. Try turning off your lens Max and see what happens. I wonder why?
