Marathon combines the best of both worlds in terms of beauty and durability. It is a 100% tall fescue blend containing the Hubbard 87 and Baja varieties. Both are exclusive to Southland Sod Farms and are the result of multiple generations of selective breeding. Primary selection criteria were dark color, dense crown, disease resistance and fine leaf texture. Until 1992, Baja (the first generation dwarf) was the main component of Marathon II. Based on current state of the art breeding standards, Baja would now be considered a semi-dwarf. During its tenure in Marathon II, Baja has proven itself through the sales of millions of square feet of sod. By shifting it to Marathon, we are able to continue to take advantage of its excellent performance. It is an ideal blend component with Hubbard 87, The two varieties compliment one another in physical characteristics, and the blend eliminates the potential effect of individual weaknesses, which are sometimes a risk with monocultures. Marathon III is the most advanced dwarf tall fescue. It represents the latest release in a fifteen year progression of breeding development. Marathon III is denser, darker green, finer leafed and slower growing than previous generations. It can be mowed shorter resulting in a more compact carpet-like appearance. Its slower growth results in significantly lower clipping yield which, in turn, lowers disposal volume. Mowing frequency may also be reduced, particularly during cooler seasons. These fields are being replaced prematurely with a more grass-like product and are still in good shape with many years left. Most fields have rolls that are 15' wide and up to 200' long. We currently have sizes starting at 7 ½' wide. We are happy to cut what ever size you would like provided you purchase the full width of the roll. Turf is available with or without a pad. Typically, our padded used turf comes with a 5/8" closed cell pad but we occasionally will have used turf that has a 5mm open cell foam backing.
