Dead Art Posters

The Grateful Dead have a long history of music. They are known for their unusual style but they are also known for the amazing artwork that has been born from their song.

I don't know why, it's the same reason why you like some music and you don't like others. There's something about it that you like. Ultimately I don't find it's in my best interests to try and analyze it, since it's fundamentally emotional.
- Jerry Garcia

The name Grateful Dead was selected from a dictionary. Some people claim it was a Funk & Wagnalls, while others, the Bardo Thodol - Tibetan Book Of the Dead, but Phil Lesh wrote on the topic in his biography "...Jer [Garcia] picked up an old Britannica World Language Dictionary...[and]...In that silvery elf-voice he said to me, 'Hey, man, how about the Grateful Dead?'" The definition there was "the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial."

The Grateful Dead

Grateful Dead was an American rock band which took shape in the height of the sixties flower child era, 1965. They began in San Francisco, California. The band was known for its singular and eclectic style, which blended elements of various styles of rock, folk, a gospel touch, bluegrass, blues, country, jazz, psychedelic, their own special form of space music. They were equally known for their extensive touring and live performances of long musical improvisation. In particular, the band oftentimes relaxed into long jams where Jerry Garcia would spend prolonged periods, where he would preform extended rock lead guitar solos that conjured assorted depth moods. Other bands applied long improvisational jams, but The Dead carried it to extremes. It became one of their many hallmarks.

The Grateful Dead's fans, not a few of whom traveled along with the band's schedule from concert to concert for many years and tours, are known as Deadheads and were famed for their loyalty to the band's music. Their numerous followers referred to the band merely as "the Dead" and considered the band family.

Their musical influences diversified widely, and in concert or on record album one can hear psychedelic rock (in the late sixties), the blues, rock nuggets, country-western, bluegrass, country rock, and though they seldom played jazz music, the band certainly adopted for their music the kind of long improvisatory sequences that jazz artists such as Charles Mingus and John Coltrane perfected in the 1950s. These diverse influences were extracted and melded into a diverse, unique whole which made the Grateful Dead "the pioneering Godfathers of the jam band world."

Wall of Sound

The Wall of Sound was an tremendous sound system configured to suit the audio needs for the Grateful Dead. The band was never content with the home system anyplace they held a concert, so in the earlier period of their history, sound man Owsley "Bear" Stanley planned a public address and monitor system for the band. Stanley's sound systems were fragile and finicky, and often took shows to a halt with technical failures. After Stanley went to jail for manufacturing LSD in 1970, the group used house PAs for a short span, but discovered them to be even less dependable than those constructed by their former soundman. In 1971, the band bought their first solid-state sound system from Alembic Inc Studios. Since of this, Alembic would play an intrinsic role in the research, development, and output of the Wall of Sound. The band also received Dan Healy into the fold on a stable basis that year. Healy, believed to be a first-rate engineer to Stanley, would continue to be in charge of mixing the Grateful Dead's live sound shows until 1993.

The Wall of Sound satisfied the band's wish for a distortion free sound arrangement that could also function as its own monitoring system. After Stanley was released from prison in late 1972, he, Dan Healy and Mark Raizene of the Grateful Dead's sound crew, in partnership with Ron Wickersham, Rick Turner, and John Curl of Alembic blended eleven different sound systems in an attempt to deliver high-quality sound to the fans. Vocals, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, and piano each had their own channel and group of speakers. Phil Lesh's bass was directed through a quadraphonic encoder that broadcast signals from each of the four strings to its own channel and set of speakers. Additional channels expanded the bass drum, and two more channels bore the snares, tom-toms, and cymbals. Since each speaker transmitted just one instrument or vocalist, the sound became exceptionally clear and free of inter modulation distortion.

Furthermore, the Dead's Wall of Sound worked as its own monitor system, and it was consequently built in back of the band so the members could hear precisely what their concert going audience was hearing simultaneously. Because of this, Stanley and Alembic designed a particular microphone system to forestall feedback. This localized matched pairs of condenser microphones spaced 60 mm apart and run out-of-phase. The vocalist sang into the top microphone, and the lower mic pieced up any other sound was existing in the stage surroundings. The signals were added together, the sound that was mutual to both microphones the sound from the Wall was offset, and only the vocals were amplified.

The Wall of Sound comprised of 89 300-watt solid-state and three 350-watt vacuum-tube amplifiers returning a total of 26,400 watts RMS of audio ability. This systems sent off high quality replay at six hundred feet with an satisfactory sound projected for a quarter mile, at which point wind disturbance dissipated it. The Wall of Sound was the biggest movable sound system of all time built - though "portable" is a relational term. The Grateful Dead had two stages for the Wall of Sound. One would go before to the next city and start to set up as soon as conceivable while the other was being employed; the former would then "leapfrog" to the following show. Four semi-trailers and 21 crew members were needed to haul and set up the 75-ton Wall.

Although the first framework and a basic form of the system was revealed in February 1973 - ominously, every speaker tweeter blew as the band began their starting song - the Grateful Dead did not start out to tour with the entire system until a year afterward in 1974. The Wall of Sound was extremely effective for its day, but it brooked from additional drawbacks aside from its immense size. Synthesist Ned Lagin, who toured with the group during much of 1974, never received his own committed input into the arrangement, and was pushed to use the vocal subsystem. Since this was frequently changed to the vocal mikes, several of Lagin's parts were dropped off in the mix. The Wall's quadraphonic formatting never interpreted well to soundboard tapes made during the point, as the sound was compacted into an affected stereo format and sustains from a marked tinniness.

The escalating price of fuel and staff, along with friction amidst numerous of the newer crew members and associated hangers-on, added to the band's 1974 "retirement." The Wall of Sound was broke apart, and once the Dead started touring again in 1976, it was with a further logistically pragmatic sound system.

Tapers History in a Nutshell

The Grateful Dead permitted their fans to tape their shows similar numerous other bands during the time. For several years the tapers set up their microphones where they could. Of course the best sound was in front of the sound board. The ultimate forest of microphones turned into problimatic for the official audio crew. Finally this was worked out by creating a consecrate taping area located behind the soundboard, which necessitated a special "tapers" ticket. Certain, more defying tapers chose to ignore the official taping section by taping the show from in Front of the Soundboard - these have been termed "FOB" tapers. These recordings are generally thought of greater quality, since of the microphones' nearer proximity to the sound generator. This is endlessly arguable, of course. These tapers would frequently be discovered by security personnel and either pulled back to the normal taping section, or booted out from the concert. All the same, these FOB tapes are in great demand by tape collectors. The band permitted sharing of tapes of their shows, as long as no profits were taken in on the sale of their concert tapes. Lately, there was some quarrel over what recordings archive.org could host on their web site. Presently, all recordings are hosted, although soundboard recordings are not accessible for download, instead in a streaming format.

Some Dead History

Lead guitarist Jerry Garcia was frequently considered both by the public and the media as the leader or chief spokesperson for the Grateful Dead, but was disinclined to be thought of as such, particularly since he and the other group members envisioned themselves as equivalent participants and contributors to their joint musical and creative yield. Garcia, originally from San Francisco, grew up in the Excelsior District. One of his principal influences was bluegrass music, and Garcia in addition to performed on banjo, one of his other distinguished instrumental loves, along with the pedal steel guitar in the bluegrass band Old and in the Way with mandolinist David Grisman. Classically directed trumpeter Phil Lesh played bass guitar. Bob Weir, the youngest original member of the group, played rhythm guitar. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan played keyboards and harmonica and was also a group vocalist until not long prior to his death in 1973 at the age of 27. All of the former named Grateful Dead members divided in vocal performance of songs. Bill Kreutzmann played drums, and in 1967 was coupled by a second drummer, New York native Mickey Hart, who also played a extensive variety of additional percussion instruments. Hart left the Grateful Dead in 1971, humiliated by the fiscal misdealings of his father, Dead profit manager Lenny Hart, and entrusting Kreutzmann once more as the only percussionist. Mickey Hart returned the Dead in 1975. Tom "TC" Constanten was brought as a second keyboardist from 1968 to 1970, while Pigpen likewise played various percussion instruments and sang. After Constanten's leaving, Pigpen recovered his position as solitary organist. Fewer than two years afterwards, in late 1971, Pigpen was linked up by a different keyboardist, Keith Godchaux, who played grand piano beside Pigpen's Hammond B-3 organ. In early 1972, Keith's wife, Donna Jean Godchaux, connected to the Dead as a backing vocalist.

Shadowing the Grateful Dead's famed "Europe '72" tour, Pigpen's wellness had degenerated to the point that he not go on tour with the Dead anymore. His last concert appearing was June 17, 1972 at the Hollywood Bowl, in Los Angeles, California. Keith and Donna Jean exited the band in 1979, and Brent Mydland joined as keyboardist and vocalist. Keith Godchaux died in a car accident in 1980. Mydland was the keyboardist for the Dead for 11 years until his death in 1990. He was the third Dead keyboardist to pass away. Almost straight off, previous The Tubes keyboardist Vince Welnick linked up keyboards and vocals. From September 15, 1990 to March 24, 1992, Welnick was connected by Bruce Hornsby on piano; Hornsby had formally appeared as a sit-in player commencing in 1988 and remained as such from 1992 until 1995. Welnick died on June 2, 2006, reportedly a suicide. Robert Hunter and John Perry Barlow were the band's chief lyricists. Owsley "Bear" Stanley was the Grateful Dead's soundman for numerous years in addition to being one of the greatest suppliers of LSD. Every eleven members of The Grateful Dead were initiated into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and Bruce Hornsby was their presenter.
