Best Grateful Dead Shows

Ranked #888 in Music, #23,180 overall

The Most Rocking Shows The Grateful Dead Played, and They Played a LOT of 'em.

The Dead went through a lot of phases and experimentation with their music, members, and songs. Their members, through the years, had a diverse background, from bluegrass, jazz, "electronica(The equivalent back then)," world music, gospel, rock and roll, country, and traditional.

One thing that is undeniable is that all members were (and those alive) are masters of their craft. I know there are people that don't care for the Grateful Dead, but if they know anything about music, they must agree these guys are good musicians. (I have a theory about why some people don't like them: they listen to the lyrics or beat only, and not to what the musicians are playing and how their individual parts intertwine to -- using a giant cliche' -- form a very rich tapestry of sound. When it clicks, it's an amazing thing. Also, they used very weird time signatures in many songs, which render their songs hard to dance to and foreign to people's ears.)

Here I will list some of their greatest shows. There are lots, and I download them all and listen to them again and again.

If anyone has a favorite show, please let me know and I will include it here to be put to the test. (I will find the best/soundboard recording if possible, and give credit for the suggestion.) Comment Space Down Below -->

My Dead-Cred

Everyone must declare how many shows they've been to, which ones blew their minds, and at least one story of doing something illegal, right? So it seems.

Not me. I have been to shows, but my allegiance goes much further than that. I dedicate myself to dissecting their music individually and attempting to recreate it (on the guitar especially) note by note, basically. I live on Archive.org and Shoucast, streaming GD radio stations all day and night. It's all I listen to, and I have studied a lot of shows. Sadly, most of the memory on my laptop is probably going towards D/L shows and will spend it's retirement as a Grateful Dead jukebox. Which will actually be pretty cool, considering my setup. Thanks so much for this lens. So many kids today don't know the Grateful Dead. There is an instructor at the University of Idaho that highlights the band in his history of Rock-and Roll course, so many college students at the UI learn about each member and the band. The class is very difficult to get into, full every semester. My kids call me a "deadhead", tell me I'm a hippie, and claim they don't like the Dead (this I believe is to push my buttons). But on our summer trip together, they concede to listen, and I think they actually like some of the songs (singing along). I was fortunate to see them in concert several times. My illegal days are over :). My sixteen year-old continues to try and pry the details of those days out of me. He's my youngest and the highest maintenance.

BONUS!

If You Get Confused, Listen to the Music Play!

This Show is SUCH insane quality, I have to include it alone. There is a LOT of tuning between songs, but the Eyes, Music Never Stopped, Peggy-O, Miss. 1/2 Step and Cassidy are Face-Melters.

Do yourself a favor if you haven't downloaded this and do it immediately.

Also, here is a good site with a lot of free downloads, including artists other than the Dead. The acoustic files are great, especially the Garcia/Kahn.

The guitar-work in this set separates the men from the boys.

Half acoustic, half electric from Halloween, 1980. This is the DVD with the legendary Bird Song, but the whole thing is a classic.I have it playing in the background right now, coincidentally.
