Show your gratitude for what you have and you will find that you have arrived.
We live in a society where we're conditioned to always be striving for more; for bigger and better things.
When do we ever arrive at a happy place? Do we arrive there today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year? Hopefully, by reading this lens; you'll start to recognize the things in your life that you do have and are able to enjoy. I think, it's important to take the time to acknowledge the things in our lives that bring us joy.
Also, there is a saying that whatever you think about expands. My theory is that by focusing on the things that we are grateful for on a regular basis; is that we attract more things to be grateful for.
I've found that by having an attitude of gratitude, I can enjoy the abundance that surrounds me.
The more that I'm grateful for what I have, the more I can appreciate life in the present moment. The more I live in the present moment, the greater I can build the stepping stones for a great future. I've also found that by having an attitude of gratitude; that I'm more focused on the solutions, than the problems.
Here are some things that I'm grateful for

The ability to walk and talk
The ability to read and write
I have a roof over my head
I have food to eat and a place to sleep
I have all of my limbs
Specific material possessions
I can type
I know how to use the internet
All of the good fortune that comes my way

I am healthy
I'm able to have insight and knowledge
I know how to troubleshoot the computer
I know how to install software on the hard drive
I can see and hear
I'm sober
I don't smoke anymore
I can write creatively
I'm able to have a positive influence on the world around me
I can write poetry
I can write stories.
What's this whole gratitude thing?
Gratitude:
What is it?
Gratitude, thankfulness, or appreciation is a positive emotion or attitude in acknowledgment of a benefit that one has received or will receive. The experience of gratitude has historically been a focus of several world religions, Emmons, R. A., & Crumpler, C. A. (2000). Gratitude as a human strength: Appraising the evidence. Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, 19, 56-69 and has been considered extensively by moral philosophers such as Adam Smith.Smith, A. (1790/1976). The Theory of Moral Sentiments (6th ed.). Indianapolis, IN: Liberty Classics. (Original work published 1790). The systematic study of gratitude within psychology only began around the year 2000, possibly because psychology has traditionally been focused more on understanding distress rather than understanding positive emotions. However, with the advent of the positive psychology movement, Linley, P. A., Joseph, S., Harrington, S., & Wood, A. M. (2006). Positive psychology: Past, present, and (possible) future.The...
The effects...
Of having an attitude of gratitude
![]()
I'm finding that the effects of having an attitude of gratitude are positive. I'm finding myself being more focused and in tune with the world around me. My mind is less prone to worry or fear and I'm more focused on solutions. As I continue to write my daily gratitude list, I'm finding that I actually have more things to be grateful for than I ever thought of before. This opens my mind up to the abundance in the universe. As I become more aware of the abundance around me, even more abundance is attracted to me. Through expressing gratitude for what I have, I become like a magnet attracting more things to be grateful for.
THE JIST OF MY BLISS!
Goes on and on
Forever and ever
I'm grateful that I can walk and talk.
I'm grateful that I can read and write.
I'm grateful that I have all of my limbs.
I'm grateful that I'm healthy.
I'm grateful that I can see and hear.
I'm grateful that I have a roof over my head.
I'm grateful that I have a driver's license.
I'm grateful that I know the difference between right and wrong.
I'm grateful that I have a sense of morality and compassion.
I'm grateful that I can write creatively.
I'm grateful for sunny days.
I'm grateful that I have electricity and heat.
I'm grateful for public transportation.
I'm grateful that I don't have to stay in one place all the time.
I'm grateful for variety.
I'm grateful for change.
I'm grateful for knowledge.
I'm grateful that there actually is light at the end of the tunnel.
I'm grateful for sarcasm and nonstop laughter.
I'm grateful that I get to give back to others.
I'm grateful that I get to make the world a better place.
Attitude with gratitude
Benefits

I must take the time to list some of the benefits of having an attitude with gratitude. One of the things is that you never have to be depressed ever again. If you are always focused on the good things that you have and are doing; then, you don't have time to be depressed or feel bad.
Right to the bitter end...

When will the bands start playing in my honor? In my own head, they already have. Aren't you glad you're not me? See, I've just given you one more thing to be grateful for. I'll go ahead and give myself a pat on the back for a job well done on that one. Thank you very much.
The way it works
Gratitude...

I'm finding out that by being in a constant state of gratitude; the things that I have to be grateful for, are growing by leaps and bounds. I do a daily gratitude list and it always seems to get bigger. I wouldn't be surprised if one day it filled up a whole book.
GRATITUDE IS AWESOME
It really is...
When being grateful for something; I find that I have to be grateful for it on a heart felt level. I can't just say," oh yeah, I'm grateful for it," and then the magic happens; it doesn't work that way. I find that the daily gratitude journal is very helpful. It makes me think about all of the good things that I do have in my life right now, which puts me in the mindset of abundance. And thus, I think that my mind works like a magnet and attracts more good things. When being grateful, I start with the simple stuff first, like walking, talking, reading, writing, sunny days, the ability to see and hear; and then I go on from there.
Are you taking things for granted?
Don't take anything for granted
And I do mean anything

One thing that I think is important when doing a gratitude journal, don't take anything for granted. What I mean is, start with the simple things like walking and talking, reading and writing, the ability to see and hear. Then, move on from there.
What are you grateful for?

Hi KingKurt!
Very inspirational. Its good to be aware of things to be grateful for.
Most of us are so rushed each day and don't take the time to live. I do it all the time but when I catch myself its nice to stop, breath, and take a look around. Especially when it comes to my wife and children.
I once read a book called "The Magic of Conflict" that said to think of everyone and everything around you as an extension of yourself. When you do that you can't get made at them. I do that a lot when in traffic and someone drives slow or "stupidly" making me angry. It really helps to calm me down and get rid of stress... Afterall, if they're extensions of yourself how can you get mad at them.
PS I just started following you on Twitter, looking forward to your tweets!
Thanks

I am re-re-learning about gratitude lists. I have an "issue" w/ the right and wrong way to do things. Sometimes I don't work on my list because I think I am doing it "wrong" or find myself writing the SAME things every time. Also some people say you should write 5 gratitudes morning noon and night, others that you should start your day with at least 20 different gratitudes daily.
I get so caught up in doing it "wrong", fearing it won't work, that I quit doing it!
I hope I can learn how to know that however I do it is RIGHT for me...and continue to do it.
Thanks for sharing your lists.

WOW. I stumbled across this lens "accidentally" but there are no accidents. I recently decided to start writing a gratitude list throughout the day. I started this past week because I'm always so negative. So every time I think a negative thought, I have a pen and paper near me and I write down something that I'm grateful for. It's amazing. Being grateful helps me stay in the present, stay out of resentment and it's just a fantastic feeling! I also watch The Secret DVD every day! I also listen to Abraham Hicks "Law of Attraction" this is great stuff! There is always something good or bad to focus on. My quality of life depends on what I focus on.

What a wonderful lens. Now more than ever we all need to stop for a moment a remember to be grateful for whatever is going right in our lives. It's almost like you read a list of my nightly prayers. I also believe that when you dwell on negative things, or things that you are afriad might happen, you tend to draw more of those very things into your life. By being grateful for what we have now, we are allowing ourselves to recieve even more.

Loved reading the comments and especially the whole lens (I'm new to the squidoo world and checking out how others are organizing their lens) but also want to express that my love of life started by being grateful for the amazing things in my life. I used to be stuck on what wasn't working well in my life and how other people were not acting how I thought they should. I replace any negative thought that comes into my head with the positive things and people I do have in my life and am now able to see so many wonderful things in the world that I was blind to before. Thank You Squidoo world. I'm lovin this.

Some while ago, I realized that I'd taken so much of the blessed life I had for granted. I still remember praying, "Father, give me a grateful heart". Within a year, I found myself in the former Soviet Union where people were giving me things out of their need. I particularly recall a man in Novosibirsk, Siberia who came up to me and gave me an adjustible wrench which was probably the most valuable thing he had with him that day. My eyes tear in remembrance as I tell about it and I am in wonder everytime I pick it up--it gives me pause and a booster shot of gratitude each time.
