WHOA ! That graveyard in Charleston pic is THE BOMB!! If you're ever in La Vernia, Tx check out the historic Concrete Cemetery! It's very interesting. I'm planning a lens on it, I just need to go take some good pictures! ;0)

I would like to find a place that makes memorial gravestones in the old style or monuments that are different and extraordinary. Let me know if you know of anything. Thanks.

You might check with my mom, I can't say for sure that she knows anyone, but then, she knows EVERYONE! www.flowergripper.com has her contact info. She makes a 100% recyclable flower frog for memorial vases at cemeteries, so she may be able to give you a contact in the granite or memorial manufacturing world. ;0)

Old gravestones with fancy inscriptions are always fascinating to read. There is a historic church near my house that has a graveyard next to it. I walked by there and some of the deceased where from the 1800s. Thanks for sharing. Blessed.

What an amazing idea for a lens! I love walking among the old headstones and reading the inscriptions as well as enjoying the artistry.

When I was growing up the family business was gravestones. I've cut out a few stencils on the granite stones. I also learned early on not to be afraid of cemeteries. As an adult I spontaneously became a psychic medium. This lens brings happy instead of sad memories for me. :)

Great topic for a lens. I posted a few slideshows on Associated Content of the old cemetery in Southampton, which has some great gravestones, but much of the cemetery is overgrown, which gives it a spooky feel.

Cool old headstones. I have always found old headstones fascinating.

I guess it comes to us all in the end. In my experience they are an expression of enduring love. Sometimes it's sad walking through a cemetery and seeing all the expressions of this? Blessed by Angel, albeit only a Squidoo one.

I actually like to walk through graveyards and look at the older headstones. It' s nice to know now what some of the symbols mean. Nice lens.
  • BigGirlBlue Sep 8, 2010 @ 11:41 am | delete
They are interesting to look at. I used to have a friend who would make charcoal sketches of the them.

Do you know what a Net Veil is? My mother talked about it covering a grave before the head stone was placed. But I don't know what it was.

The clasped hands or hand shake meaning farwell. OK some I,ve noticed have all fingers closed, some, the index finger some what relaxed, and some the finger extended. What is this?

Under current trends you mention that we remember our loved ones through writings, photographs and stories. I've also seen a lot of memorial messages on rear windows of cars recently.
