You really did find the best of the best in boys books here! I just featured this lens on my "The Best Summer Learning Activities and Projects by Subject" lens. :)

You have some great suggestions here for books for boys. My boys loved the Hardy Boys books. You might consider adding some of the Gary Paulsen books especially the Mr. Tucket series. (I've lensrolled this to my Happy Hollisters lens.)

When my 2 sons were little, their favorite book was "Good Night Moon".

I always love to see something written for boys, who tend to be a bit more difficult to deal with as far as reading. I believe I will get the Percy Jackson book for my son - who hates to read just about anything. Thank you for the in-depth reviews.

Big congrats on winning the Sunshine Award! Anytime you can pull a boy away from the video games and get him to read a book, you've won in my opinion. Great list of books here.

Oh, gees! I loved all the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books when I was a kid and those adventure books where you chose which path to take next - those were addicting! My six year old is currently into all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. They're funny (almost obnoxiously so at times but as long as he's reading...). Great list!
  • sandyspider May 23, 2010 @ 11:32 am | delete
    Very nice selection of books.
  • whitemoss May 23, 2010 @ 6:51 am | delete
We're going back some years, but my sons loved the Starwars books. Whatever gets them reading is great ! Enjoyed your lens
  • lakern26 May 22, 2010 @ 10:26 pm | delete
What a wonderful collection of books! My 8yr old loves to read and has been an avid reader since he was 4yrs old. He has more books than he can fit in his bookcase, but I know he would love some of the ones you've suggested here. Thanks so much for the ideas and best of luck on the Sunshine award (I've sent my vote)!
  • Susan52 May 23, 2010 @ 6:48 am | delete
I love hearing about kids, especially boys, who love to read. Thanks for the Sunshine vote!

I have 3 tween boys who like a variety of books, from classics to newer series. One 11-yr-old is finishing up Where the Red Fern Growns, while his twin is on a historical fiction streak and reading Elijah of Buxton. 13-yr-old bro. is enjoying Catching Fire (Hunger Games series book 2...best for 12 and older, I'd say). Great lens!
  • Sylvestermouse May 22, 2010 @ 10:53 am | delete
My son loves to read! I used to read everything before he did just to make sure it would be okay. At 20 yrs. old, I let him choose his own books now :) Would you believe he loves books so much that he actually asked for a particular collection for Christmas last year? I do have to laugh a little here though. I definitely remember "The Magic School Bus" series.
  • ohcaroline May 22, 2010 @ 9:09 am | delete
Summer can definitely be fun with these selections to read. Nice presentation.
  • OhMe May 20, 2010 @ 5:41 pm | delete
These are great suggestions for Summer Reading for Boys. My grandson has some of these but I am going to share this with him and let him pick out some to have for his summer reading. Thanks and this lens is now featured on Sunshine Award Nominations and of course I am nominating it, too. Good Luck!

    These are all great suggestions!

My boys loved the Magic Tree House series. I like the fact that the author has branched out with some informational books to accompany the chapter books although I haven't actually read any of them.
  • Carmel_Aaron May 18, 2010 @ 5:25 pm | delete
    This material is wonderful.

I am female of course, but loved the Hardy Boys anyway.

My son in grown and loves to read-his interests are quite varied.

    Thumbs-up

I think you have a wonderful list of books here that are geared to entice boys to read. I'll be forever grateful to my son's 2nd grade teacher for sparking the reading fire. Great idea from Whitepine!
  • Joan4 May 18, 2010 @ 2:46 pm | delete
wondering if my 6 y/o would enjoy the Magic Schoolbus. I would have thought he was too young. I did get him some Star Wars books and he loves those and sports books. but he is not "hooked" on reading yet.
  • Susan52 May 18, 2010 @ 3:28 pm | delete
He's still young, Joan, but I'd go ahead and try Magic School Bus and see how he responds to them. There should be a ton of Star Wars and sports books that he hasn't read, though, and with higher and higher reading levels. If he's not ready for the next level yet, he will be soon.
  • Whitepines May 18, 2010 @ 2:28 pm | delete
My guys loved My Brother Lewis Measures Worms. Just a tip for hooking reluctant readers that worked for us: Start reading the book aloud to your child and then put it down at a crucial spot because you have to get dinner ready or do some other chore. He might just get tempted to pick it up and finish the chapter on his own.

    Great tip! Love it!
