#1: Right to the point...

Recommendation #1 -- Get Paid More and Promoted Faster: 21 Great Ways to Get Ahead in Your Career

This book has been a mainstay in my library for the last decade and continues to be a great source of inspiration to this day. Some may argue that it is a lot of "common sense," but if they're so common then why isn't everyone already a CEO? No, what makes this book top of the recommendation list is that it combines great advice with specific action steps, in a nice package. Simply put, 21 of the best tips are gathered in one book... a quick read, and worthwhile one.

#2: Ok, let's get moving...

Recommendation #2 -- Who Gets Promoted, Who Doesn't, and Why: 10 Things You'd Better Do If You Want to Get Ahead

I love the product description... get off the treadmill to mediocrity and jump on the fast track to an exceptional career! This is about controlling your own destiny and actually formulating a personal strategy on how to position yourself for rapid career growth. As a kid I learned the expression, "Work smarter, not harder." After reading this book, i realized how critical that concept was to career growth. In order to begin controlling my own destiny, we need to realize that advancement at work is often less about skill sets and more about strategy.

#3: It's time to become extraordinary...

Recommendation #3 -- From Day One: CEO Advice to Launch an Extraordinary Career

There are a lot of good books out there that can teach you practical tips about networking, creating first impressions, managing upward, setting priorities, etc., but this book is written from the point of view of an actual CEO, so it felt great to get that inside perspective straight from the corner office. Books authored by CEOs typically outlined the ways that they have attained success, but in this book Bill White makes it seem as though he's actually giving one-on-one, personal advice on how you can be successful. My suggestion? Take his advice.

#4: A few rules is all you need...

Recommendation #4 -- How to Become CEO: The Rules for Rising to the Top of Any Organization

This book doesn't mess around with fluffspeak... it gets straight to the point. In fact, each "rule" (there are 75 of them in the book) is only two pages long each. How great is that?!? And these aren't just some regurgitated, theoretical words of wisdom, these are very specific actionable items, eg: "Always take the job that offers the most money," "Don't have a drink with the gang," "Never write a nasty memo," and "Know Everybody by Their First Name." This is another title that has been on my bookshelf forever, and really I think it should be on yours too.

Recommendation #5 - Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity

No matter what you think about office politics, the absolute #1 factor in determining who gets promoted is the person who gets the most meaningful things accomplished. Getting things done will propel your career faster than any other single thing you can do. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the system presented in this book really helps you categorize the seemingly never-ending to-do items floating around your head every day. I also bought the CD version so I could listen in my car. Follow the system and you really will accomplish the most work with the least amount of stress.

Recommendation #6 -- The Power of Focus: How to Hit Your Business, Personal, And Financial Targets With Absolute Certainty

The ability to set priorities is a key aspect of being promotable at work, so you'll need to know how to concentrate on your strengths, set goals, and focus on them. It's written by the same guys who created the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, so I'd say they know a thing or two about how to be successful. Although the suggestions in this book could be applied to daily tasks, this book has especially helped me at times when I was at major crossroads in my career and life. They stories in the book are also helpful in relating the concepts to you, because you feel like others have been down this road before.

Recommendation #8 -- Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?

Seth Godin's collection offers some of the greatest insights around, and when it comes to learning about how to stand out among the rest at work, you better have this one on your bookshelf! The mantra is "Become Indispensable" and it's one to live by. The passion in which he delivers this message is one that really resonated with me, and I think it will with you too. When you approach your work with passion and strive to make yourself indispensable, trust me upper management will notice... and reward.

This book uncovers the reality of how executive promotions are made based on the decision makers' intuitive sense of whether or not a manager can succeed at higher levels within the organization.

This book taught me how critical another set of skills are to becoming CEO material: 1) strategic skills, 2) ability to build strong team, 3) implement new initiatives, 4) exhibit the capacity for innovation, 5) work across boundaries, and 6) have an executive presence.

Thanks for exploring this lens with me. If you made it this far, here's a bonus recommendation for you. Ken Blanchard has produced some of the most classic management books around, but this one focuses on the art of influence, which is an essential skill to master if you're going to advance through the ranks. I've most often heard this concept referred to as "getting buy-in," but the message is the same -- you need to be able to influence others if you're going to be a leader and be ready for the next big gig.
