Books Every Christian Should Read

When I got saved at the age of 16 I had read very few books of any kind. After my conversion, I was encouraged by those older in the faith to start reading good Christian books--especially biographies of godly men and women. I want to use this lens to create a list of several books that every Christian should read. If you have already read the books I list below, maybe you'd like to add a comment or mini review in the space provided below each book. You're also welcome to add your own suggestions for "must read" Christian books.

Number One - The Pursuit of God by A. W. Tozer

Classic on the Interior Spiritual Life

I've forgotten how many times I've drunk from this fountain of inspiration, challenge, and blessing. Tozer had an intimacy with God that surpassed many in his or any generation and this small volume seems to distill that relationship into words better than anything I know of. If your heart pants for God, this is the book for you. As you pore over it's pages you will be led past the outer courts and the holy place all the way into the holy of holies. Prepare to remove your shoes, for this is holy ground indeed. Read more about (and buy) The Pursuit of God by A. W. Tozer

Number Two - Abandoned to God

Life Story of Oswald Chambers

Oswald Chambers: Abandoned to God: The Life Story of the Author of My Utmost for His Highest

Oswald Chambers is best known for his daily devotional, My Utmost for His Highest. He was a master of the inner life who seemed to have spiritual vision and insight beyond the normal. He died at the young age of 42 but had the spiritual maturity of someone much older.

Like most people, I had read his books for years before I knew much about the man. Then I was asked by the publishing company I worked for to go down to London, England, and interview his daughter for biographical sketches that were being written about Chambers and his wife. I considered it a great honor to meet this only daughter and I became intensely interested in his life story from that point onward. The biographical sketches appeared in the book They Knew Their God Volume 3 by E. F. & L. Harvey.

Then, somewhere in the 1990's, David McCasland did the world an enormous favor by giving us the most detailed and interesting (not to say inspirational) biography ever written about Oswald Chambers. Believe me when I say that this is one of the best Christian biographies ever written. Period. The story of Oswald's infilling of the Holy Spirit after a four year period of spiritual darkness and self discovery is intensely gripping and will leave you yearning for that same infilling.

Words fail me. Oswald Chambers is among my top three heroes of the faith and this biography definitely does him justice. If you haven't read it, don't wait. Get it and read it NOW.
