Fond Memories of Fishing Vacations In Northern Ontario
My father loved fishing and every year during my growing up years our family vacation consisted of a trip to Canada. Leaving western Pennsylvania for the "Near North" was a ten to twelve hour drive to the lower French River area in Ontario.
Our family usually had reservations at one of Ontario's many rustic lodges that consisted of renting a cabin, boat and motor. For those that love the great outdoors Northern Ontario offers breathtaking views. Pristine lakes, huge boulders, beautiful white birch trees and the ability to fish a whole day without encountering another human. Plenty of wildlife, over the years I have seen black bear, swimming beavers and otters and an on occasion a mink trying to rob my bait bucket.
The fishing was always fantastic. I can never remember a bad year of "getting skunked" fishing. We caught plenty of northern pike. walleyes, and bass. Nothing record breaking but large numbers of good sized fish.
On the negative side there is the mosquito and the black flies. In the summer months the mosquito arrive at night fall by the millions so if you are planning a fishing trip for the first time take plenty of insect repellent and the use of mosquito netting would be a huge asset. I found over the years the best time for avoiding the insects was the month of September.
The tackle I use on these fishing vacations usually consists of a casting rod and reel for trolling for musky and large northern pike, a medium sized spinning rod and reel for boat and shore bass fishing and a light duty spinning rod and reel for having fun catching pan and bait fish.
My wife and I still fish northern Ontario and every year I look forward to a week in the wilderness every September that provides me with peace and quiet along with great fishing.
