Great Gifts for Geeks

Ranked #7,909 in Computers & Electronics, #165,422 overall

An unusual gift idea

The demand for tablets has increased since the launch of Apple's iPad. Many of us cannot afford the high price tag for the Apple tablet, but we can can afford those tablets on the lower end of the price scale.

Please say 'welcome' to Google Android!

Google Android is the software that runs on a vast amount of tablets, phones, laptops and more, and it's improving all the time. If your man (or the geek in your life) owns one of these, then he will love the range of interesting apps that can be obtained from the Android Market, either for free or for a very modest price.

Did you know?

There isn't just Apps!

Android Market also sells Books and Movies!

Yes, providing that your tablet/phone is compatible, you can even buy/rent and download books and movies to your device.

In order to access the Android Market, you do need a Google Account. You can pay for Apps with your credit card if you wish. However, many Apps and Books are FREE!

N.B. Do read the reviews especially the most recent ones. Many new updates to the Apps can render them useless on some devices and phones.

Do not buy any Apps until you are sure that:

A) You are going to use it.
B) You really need it.

Many paid Apps have free versions. Do try these out before you make a decision to buy an App.

Steer Clear of these Apps!

Acer ICONIA Tab A500

My choice of tablet

Acer Tablet

I've not had the pleasure of the use of a tablet for very long. In the first instance, we made bad choices with regards to tablets; they just weren't fast enough or developed enough to be of use.

Now, I've changed my mind. The first tablets I had, I never used. They couldn't be upgraded and as there was no Android Market App installed, no apps could be installed. They were nothing more than a glorified photo frame.

This recent purchase (the Acer) makes the whole thing USEFUL. Great if you're on the move and do not want to lug your bulky laptop around. It's great for taking pictures, reading E-books, playing games, creating and editing documents and so much more.

If you do wish to buy an Android Tablet, there are a few things to bear in mind:

1. Battery life
2. Android version installed (aim for 3 upwards (listen out for Honeycomb and Ice-Cream Sandwich))
3. Screen size
4. Price
5. Memory available (also can memory be added in the form of memory cards)
6. Able to use a SIM card.
7. Hard drive size.

A way to give Apps for Gifts

On Android...

At present, there is no way of giving an App (or book/movie) as a gift on the Android Market without giving away your Google account details.

Should this be one of the next steps for Developers to go?

Should it be possible to give Apps as Gifts on Android?

Yes, this would be ideal and perfect! If I could I would develop it!

No, it would be too complicated and a risk to security.
