Take Your Squidoo Group To A Whole New Level!

Squidoo Groups are undergoing a major change right now. If you have a Squidoo group you should cherish it and work toward making it the best it can be.

By June 1st 100 extra special groups will be chosen to receive an extra special tool. Below are some tips, tricks, and shared information on taking your Squidoo group to the next level.

Recent Squidoo Groups Changes

To help set the foundation for even better interactions between lensmasters on Squidoo, and to align with the new quality assurance programs we're putting in place going forward, we're making a few changes to SquidooGroups:

1. As of right now, no new Groups can be created.

2. That means the Groups you already have are special. It's a closed privilege. As such, we're setting our expectations for your existing Groups a little higher. We hope you'll take some time to check out our list for taking your Groups from Good to Great, below.

3. Some time before June 1 2009, we're going to choose up to 100 of the very BEST groups on Squidoo and unlock a special tool just for them. These groups will fit a list of our criteria and be nominated by SquidStaff and our Angels.

4. At the same time, we won't be shy about locking spam or junk or abandoned Groups over the next few months. So make sure yours don't get mistaken for such.

Making Your Groups Rock: Make Your Group HQ Page Fabulous!

The front door of your group is the first thing everyone sees when they find your group. Hold their attention and make them want more! Your group page is a pretty good indicator of how dedicated you are to your group.

If you want other lensmasters to join your group, or if you want visitors to stay and, well... visit, give them something to look at, something to hold their attention.

Once you have a great group page set up it's easier to maintain in the future.

Here Are Some Lenses To Help You Make Your Group Page Great

Make Your Groups Rock: Give Your Group a Focus

Don't think big like "travel." Think focused or niche, like "Traveling in the Outer Banks North Carolina."

Some bigger groups do fine, but did you know that if you be more selective you can get even more attention and better submissions? Ultimately you'll have a better group, that will have a better chance of getting indexed, or getting noticed by outsiders.
Via Kimberly, "Think as niche as you can. 'Vegetarian soup recipes' or 'Great kitchen gadgets for advanced chefs' is way better than a 'Cooking' group, because it lets you set the rules, have criteria for accepting or rejecting lenses, and gives you a clear topic to discuss with your group members. Plus it's better for traffic, and a lot more interesting.

If you have a larger group, all is not lost, just hone it, define it, and make your group into something you can manage. You're in control, it's your group, make it great!

Make Your Groups Rock: Give Them Something To Talk About

Interact with your group members. Don't just create your group, set it on autopilot and forget it. Here are some great ways you can interact with group members, and encourage them to interact with others in the group.
  1. visit, rate, and comment on new lenses in your group. Encourage others to do the same. Ask them to visit other lenses when they join.
  2. Add a plexo, and encourage group members to add their lens and vote for their favorites.
  3. Add a comment module, and ask a question about something your group members will care about.
  4. Start a movement off Squidoo about your group, a page on Facebook, ask members to follow the group on Twitter, set up something in Ning. Think outside the box and see what you can come up with.
  5. Host a challenge or contest for your group members, and future group members. Offer a small prize to the winner, the prize can even be a badge for their lens, or a premium spot on your group page.

Make Your Groups Rock: Get The Word Out On Your Group and Promote It!

You promote your lenses, but have you ever thought about promoting your groups? Now I'm not saying to spam your group link everywhere, but if you are proud of your group a little promotion doesn't hurt. Here are some things you can do to promote your group:

1. Tweet about it.

2. Add a link to your group to some of your other lenses.

3. Create a fan club or group about your group off Squidoo, and invite the group members to join.

4. Blog about it!

5. Send Out a Squidcast

6. Get out there and invite great/ relevant lenses to join your group.

You've Decided You Don't Have Time To Devote To Your Group Now What?

Instead of closing your group why not find it a new owner? Post a quick note in the Groups discussion forum to see if someone would like to adopt your group and give it a little TLC.

Then follow the instructions in the lens below to transfer your group a new loving home.

Looks good! I don't join too many Groups, I guess I am easily discouraged by all of the trashy Groups out there, but I've just submitted to two on your list! I'll have to start here next time I'm looking for good ones to join! Thanks!
