How about some more joyous occasions - the wedding of Charles and Diana or of William and Kate - The whole family was just as gripped to the TV!
  • CruiseReady Dec 19, 2011 @ 11:22 am | delete
No, I think you got the important ones. I wouldn't include any of the extra ones you asked about, which, while perhaps signigicant to some, are not as monumental as the ones you included

    great lens
  • aquarian_insight Dec 8, 2011 @ 4:10 am | delete
Great LoTD - well done! I would have added the deaths of Diana & Micheal Jackson, the Challenger disaster - I remember that so clearly because my dad had told me all about the teacher who was going to space.

Congratulations on Lens of the Day! It is well-deserved. This is a wonderful lens!
  • Comfortdoc Dec 7, 2011 @ 8:31 pm | delete
Congrats on a great idea for a lens. I would add deaths of Princess Diana, John Lennon, JFK jr. and Michael Jackson. The start of Desert Storm.
Thank you for including the Anniversary Response lens as a resource.
  • BuddyBink Dec 7, 2011 @ 7:59 pm | delete
    How about the Challenger?
  • mrducksmrnot Dec 7, 2011 @ 7:38 pm | delete
Congratulations on Lens Of The Day. It will certainly stir one's mind. How about the first
Color TV's, First Super Highway (Interstate) coming through your home town, First Tooth pulled, first broken bone, first child born. So many 1st it is really hard to remember them all.
  • AlleyCatLane Dec 7, 2011 @ 7:00 pm | delete
Definitely the deaths of Princess Diana and John Lennon.
  • AndyPo Dec 7, 2011 @ 5:45 pm | delete
Congratulations on the LOTD. I was stranded near Komodo Island, the Indonesian archipelago, when Princess Diana died. The plane had broken down and by the time I got back to civilization I may have been the last person on the planet to find out about the accident.
  • RawBill Dec 7, 2011 @ 3:14 pm | delete
Congrats on LOTD Virginia, this is an awesome page. Princess Diana and John Lennon would be worthy inclusions here. I remember the day Diana died as I was upset that the football game I had planned watching on TV was not on due to every channel covering her death.
  • lestroischenes Dec 7, 2011 @ 2:44 pm | delete
The death of Elvis Presley. I was quite young and had been on holiday in France. The first thing the guard said to us at the border at crack of dawn was that Elvis had died.

The second was the death of Princess Diana. Inspirationally creative idea for a lens!
  • DLeighAlexander Dec 7, 2011 @ 2:30 pm | delete
Very informative, interesting lens! Congratulations on LOTD!
  • yano_jl Dec 7, 2011 @ 2:19 pm | delete
The loss of the Challenger and her crew. I remember that one like it was yesterday.
  • BunnyFabulous Dec 7, 2011 @ 2:12 pm | delete
    Ronald Reagan shot
    Berlin wall coming down

Excellent lens! Congrats on LOTD...so timely on Pearl Harbor day.
  • Frankster Dec 7, 2011 @ 1:58 pm | delete
Maybe the Challenger blowing up. Excellent lens. Congrats on LOTD. Blessed. Bear hugs, Frankster

A few more of the events in my life where I can remember exactly where I was when they happened:
--Nixon resigning (My dad called us all in to watch it on TV)
--John Lennon being killed (Couldn't sleep, was in bed with the radio on)
--President Reagan assassination attempt (At work)
--John Belushi's death (In my car, driving home for the weekend from college)
    and of course,
--Princess Diana's death (had just put my 7-month-old firstborn to bed)
I loved Princess Diana. We were the same age - both born in 1961.

Congrats on LOTD - this is an interesting lens that brings back lots of memories!

    Death of John Paul II
  • DesignedbyLisa Dec 7, 2011 @ 11:42 am | delete
The Space shuttle explosion was a big one for me too. The wall coming down for Germany might be good. Congrats on the LOTD.
  • Joan4 Dec 7, 2011 @ 11:15 am | delete
My husband has told and retold the story of getting hit by a car the day World War II ended. There was celebration in the streets all across the USA.
  • maurissam Dec 7, 2011 @ 11:11 am | delete
Another great even is that this lens is the LENS OF THE DAY, congratulation!!!
  • PaulOnBooks Dec 7, 2011 @ 10:52 am | delete
Please, not the death of Diana, Princess Of Wales. That kiclstarted the mawkish "A Nation Mourns" attitude.

Great lens - a ood idea perfectly executed.
  • wordstock Dec 7, 2011 @ 10:39 am | delete
The Space Shuttle Challenger disaster that occurred on January 28, 1986. Another day at the same employer where we watched TV and did not work. Congrats on LOTD. Well deserved, well-written lens with events that touch us all.
  • partybuzz Dec 7, 2011 @ 10:38 am | delete
    Great lens. Congratulations on LotD!!

Thanks for sharing this lens - it's quite interesting to read the community's stories. Definitely worthy of LotD, and blessings from this SquidAngel!
  • BarbaraCasey Dec 7, 2011 @ 8:44 am | delete
Elvis' first TV appearance. I still remember that one.
  • jptanabe Dec 7, 2011 @ 8:43 am | delete
Great lens - there are many more great events to add, you could probably make a series of lenses! Blessed

    Diana's death
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Dec 7, 2011 @ 8:25 am | delete
These powerful events tie us together in community as a nation. Appreciated this opportunity to remember and to honor those who provided service during these times of great historic proportions. Congrats on LotD!
  • tagsforkids Dec 7, 2011 @ 8:05 am | delete
There are certainly many news-worthy events that have an impact on many. Off hand, one more that makes me remember where I was and what I was doing that day was the space shuttle Challenger. Another sad tragedy burned into memory.
  • WindyWinters Dec 7, 2011 @ 4:43 am | delete
Congrats on LOTD. I was very sadden by Princess Di's death and heard the news of an accident on the radio while I was at work. I think that would be a great event to include here.
  • daedrea Dec 7, 2011 @ 2:28 am | delete
very neat and creative lens...we really do need to reflect on past memories and what we were doing on those famous events :)
  • slappywalker Dec 7, 2011 @ 1:12 am | delete
I had to stop back for one more. The fall of the Berlin Wall was another pretty special event. I can't remember where I was, but I'm sure plenty of people knew the significance of what was happening.
  • slappywalker Dec 7, 2011 @ 1:00 am | delete
Loved the format of this lens. Great job!

If I had to include one or two, I would probably say the Challenger and Columbia disasters. I still remember where I was when each of them were destroyed.
  • Frischy Sep 10, 2011 @ 7:45 pm | delete
I think I will always remember the day they arrested the Beltway Sniper. For almost a month we had been living under this threat whenever we went out in public. People had been killed pumping gas and walking through parking lots, activities we did everyday. Even a child was shot in a school yard.

As Halloween approached, there was no question in anyone's mind that there would be no trick or treating. It was scary just to leave the house. We crouched down pumping gas and prayed the shooter would not drive by our child's school.

The day they caught those guys was one of tremendous joy! I immediately went out and bought Halloween costumes for my children. Many other mothers had the same thought as the costume store began filling with shoppers. It was a happy day!

What a clever idea for a lens! So fun to read everyone's stories!
  • ChrissLJ May 8, 2011 @ 10:36 pm | delete
I was a waitress in Branson when Princess Di died. One of the (male) bosses worshiped the princess and broke down bawling when he heard. Several years later I moved to Paris for several months. When my hostess was giving me a car tour of the city the first day there, she made a long detour home just so she could show me the precise location of the wreck. Even though it was about 5 years after her death, I remember there still being flowers at the wreck site. That was the same year that the US flew planes over Chinese airspace and several of the European news agencies were reporting possible war repercussions. Not the best time to be abroad.
  • ChineseKitesforKids May 8, 2011 @ 9:40 pm | delete
Yes, I agree with the death of Diana, that's a good suggestion.
  • JoanneOtt Mar 22, 2011 @ 10:23 pm | delete
I would say the death of Princess Diana, and maybe JFK Jr.
  • nancycarol Jan 22, 2011 @ 4:37 pm | delete
The fall of the Berlin Wall: Watching East and West German relatives finally able to be together, to hug and cry was an emotionally wrenching event, and all those people climbing, jumping, going through openings like a flowing river to reach freedom was an exceptional experience.
  • pkmcr Jan 22, 2011 @ 12:15 pm | delete
The fal of the Berlin Wall is one of the turning points of modern history for me and should certainly be covered. The death of His Holiness Pope John Paul who for many was the only Pope they have ever known. The death of Diana Princess of Wales was a turning point for one of the oldest Monarchies in the world. The election of Obama as the first Black President of the US was a significant event for the world. The disbanding of the USSR
  • vallain Jan 22, 2011 @ 1:47 pm | delete
These are all excellent events, Paul. I may have to make this a 2 page lens.
  • foovay Jan 21, 2011 @ 4:04 pm | delete
What a fascinating lens. I'm not sure about what other events should be included though. I certainly remember finding about about John Lennon and Princess Diana - but I also remember very clearly having to pull over because I was crying too hard to see when Harry Chapin's death was announced on the radio. I think these deaths are probably less "world events" than events that hit some people harder than others. You know - I wouldn't mind if you added the Tienmen (sp?) Square event - I actually saw that on CNN when that tank pulled up to the defiant student and stopped...
  • WildFacesGallery Jan 21, 2011 @ 8:34 am | delete
What an interesting lens idea. I wasn't born yet for the other three but I know people take note of world changing events and what they were doing when it happened. Really a great lens.
  • mbgphoto Jan 21, 2011 @ 8:05 am | delete
You have hit the main ones for me. Interesting lens...blessed.
  • SereneSea Jan 21, 2011 @ 3:55 am | delete
This made a great reading - the day these attacks happened, I was in awe and shocked for some of them. I was like - trying to find more information on TV , internet and news.
  • _Joan_ Jan 20, 2011 @ 11:46 pm | delete
One event that I watched on TV with my parents and knew that it was historic in its way was when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's home run record.
  • Othercat Jan 20, 2011 @ 11:23 pm | delete
You've covered all the major events I can think of.
Just a note: I never thought that people could actually remember what they were doing when JFK was shot. I just figured they made something up just to have something to talk about. But since 9/11, I've changed my mind. I know I'll never forget not only what I was doing, but also exactly how I felt when I saw it on the tv.
