Josephine Baker, African American Dancer and Actress in a Seductive Pose, 1920's

Song Lyrics for "I've Got My Captain Working for me Now"

Al Jolson

[1st verse:]

Johnny Jones was a first class private
In the army last year
Now he's back to bus'ness in his father's place
Sunday night I saw him with a smiling face
When I asked why he felt so happy
Johnny chuckled with glee
He winked his eye and made this reply:
'Something wonderful has happened to me'

[chorus:]

I've got the guy who used to be my Captain working for me
He wanted work so I made him a clerk in my father's factory
And bye and bye I'm gonna have him wrapped in work up to his brow
I make him open the office ev'ry morning at eight
I come around about four hours late
Ev'rything comes to those who wait
I've got my Captain working for me now

[2nd verse:]

He's not worth what I have to pay him
But I'll never complain I've agreed to give him fifty dollars per
It's worth twice as much to hear him call me 'Sir'
While I sit in my cozy office
He's outside working hard
Out in the hall at my beck and call
With a feather duster standing on guard

[2nd chorus:]

I've got the guy who used to be my Captain working for me
He wanted work so I made him a clerk in my father's factory
And bye and bye I'm gonna have him wrapped in work up to his brow
When I come into the office he gets up on his feet
Stands at attention and gives me his seat
Who was it said 'revenge is sweet'

Lyrics for "Show Me The Way to Go Home"

Show me the way to go home
I'm tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
And it went right to my head (or it's gone straight to my head)
Where ever I may roam
On land or sea or foam
You will always hear me singing this song
Show me the way to go home

Tip-Toe Through the Tulip Song Lyrics

As Originally Performed by Nick Lucas

Nick Lucas

Tiptoe through the window
Shades of night are creeping
Willow trees are weeping
Old folks and babies are sleeping
Silver stars are gleaming
All alone I'm scheming
Scheming to get you out here, my dear, come
Come on out and pet me
Come and "Juliet" me
Tease me and slyly "coquette" me
Let me Romeo you, I just want to show you
How much I'm willing to do for you, come

Tip toe to the window, by the window
That is where I'll be, come
Tip toe thru the tulips with me
Tip toe from your pillow
To the shadow of the willow tree
And tip toe thru the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away
And if I kiss you in the garden
In the moonlight, will you pardon me
Come tip toe thru the tulips with me.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips Song Lyrics by Tiny Tim

Tiny TimTiptoe to the window
By the window, that is where I'll be
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me

Oh, tiptoe from the garden
By the garden of the willow tree
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away
And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight
Will you pardon me?
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

You put together a really great list of songs & lyrics. I sometimes listen to this type of music for background sound while painting, etc. Funny seeing the Tiny Tim "Rowen & Martin's Laugh-In" segment. I remember seeing it live *ahem* ...lol

I'm not particularly a fan of 1920s music (except for Gershwin), but I was surprised to see how many songs I knew and like were first hits in the 1920s. I learned from your lens.

I love old pictures, and I think this kind of music is so funny.... so different from what we have now.... I think everybody should listen to this music, at least once. It's history!

My head is spinning! First of all I thought you were closer to my age, you look awesome for someone who was alive in the 20's! My how they roared! I'm shocked, astounded and a little sad that Tiptoe Through the Tulips is not a Tiny Tim original ~ excuse me, I have to go lay down.....reality! You may have burst my bubble but you did it with your usual style and class.

Okay, a bit before my time (your's too) but what a wonderful collection! I love all types of music and singers, sans a couple newer genres. I do remember my Kentuckian grandmother playing her electric guitar and singing "Show me the Way to Go Home". Thanks for the memories Mom! LOL
