Brief History Behind Pumpkins - Jack o' Lanterns and Halloween
Or is it All Hallows Eve?
The reasoning behind carving pumpkins into jackolanterns comes from an Irish myth, whereby a man nicknamed Stingy Jack ultimately tricked the Devil. When Jack finally died, God decided that Jack was not the sort of person he wanted in heaven and so turned him away.Of course, the Devil, having been tricked was not having him in Hell either and so sent him off to wander in the dark for the rest of his days with only a burning coal for light. Jack put the burning coal into a carved turnip (at that time) and has roamed the earth like this ever since.
So, the idea of carving turnips evolved into pumpkins as 1. They are easier to manage 2. They were more readily available too 3. It was hugely influenced by the Irish immigration to America as they bought this fantastic carving tradition with them and discovered that pumpkins were far superior for making fantastic Jack o lanterns.
The idea being that the scary or comical carved pumpkin placed in the doorway or window after dark would keep not only Stingy Jack but any other evil spirits away.
