Recommended Books For Teens And Adults

I absolutely love reading - any season, any day, any time. My favorite part of Christmas break is curling up by the fire with a good book. It sounds super cliche, but it's the truth. I love watching the snow fall, sipping a steaming hot cup of green tea, and losing myself in a book. The best part is when that book is part of a series so I have something else to look forward to. From my love of reading, I've read quite a few excellent books. You'll probably recognize some and you'll probably be hearing about others for the first time. I love everything - from the classics to more popular books.

My personal favorite, besides the Harry Potter series, is The Hunger Games trilogy. It features the story of Katniss Everdeen, a girl living in the country of Panem, that gets chosen to be one of the tributes to compete in the Hunger Games. The games are the opposite of fun though. They consist of every person fighting to the death in a controlled environment. And to top it off, the whole thing is televised and cheered on by the Capitol. The author, Suzanne Collins, does a great job of describing this post-apocolyptic world that shows the basis of human nature and the fight between what's right and wrong.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Book 1)

I began reading these books all the way back in second grade, but they truly appeal to all ages. I read them all over again in high school and I was still sucked in just as much to the magical world of Harry Potter. I've even had the privilege of being able to read them to my adorable nephew. If you're turned off by the idea of reading about witches and wizards, don't let that stop you. It's so much more than that. The story is so much more complex and shows the most important things in life - loyalty, bravery, intelligence, kindness, friendship. It's the ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

I am a fan of Shakespeare - not a diehard fan, but a fan nonetheless. I was required to read Romeo & Juliet in high school, but I fell in love with it. I reread it later on and appreciated it so much more. It's a story of unrequited love. You can say the story seems a bit ridiculous - Romeo and Juliet fall in love at first sight and vow to get married as soon as possible. There's only one problem: their families are enemies and would vehemently disapprove of their relationship. The two do crazy things for love and the story is very entertaining.

Matched

Matched is a trilogy with two books currently available for purchase. I've only read the first one and I'm going to be buying the second book in a few weeks. I was so interested in the concept of this book because it's all about a government that controls almost everything - who you marry (you're match), what your job will be, what you eat, how much you can exercise. The main character, Cassia, gets matched with someone she's been close to her whole life, but something goes wrong. It leaves her with an important decision to make that could cause her to risk everything.

Delirium

In a place where love is viewed as something as horrible as cancer, Lena can't wait until the day when she is cured. Scientists found the cure to love, or what they call "deliria", and have made it a requirement for everyone to be cured when they are 18. Before they reach that age, kids are placed in same sex schools and have little to no interaction with the opposite sex, except for family members. To keep reproduction continuing, people are paired up with a member of the opposite sex to marry and have children with. But there is no love involved. Too much touching, laughter, or happy emotions triggers reactions that could get you sent to prison. Lena doesn't see any of this as a problem until she meets someone that changes everything...

Wither (The Chemical Garden Trilogy)

Another trilogy! Two books have been released and the third is still yet to come. Wither is such an amazing book. I picked it up at the store on a whim and I ended up loving it. This book takes place in the future, where scientists have found the cure for cancer. The downside? People start dying at specific ages. Men never live to see a day over 25 and women only live until they are 20. Because of this, women are stolen and forced into polygamous marriages so the population doesn't die out. The lead character, Rhine, gets taken away from her twin brother and forced to marry Linden, a wealthy man. She has sister wives that she likes, a huge house to live in, everything she could ever want. But something doesn't feel right. Linden truly loves her, which is rare. But she refuses to sleep with him and produce a child. Instead, she finds out a horrible secret about his father and begins to fear for her life.

Looking For Alaska

This is honestly one of the weirdest books I've ever read, but in a really good way. It's refreshing to read a book like this, written in such a different way than most of the books I read. It's a hard book to explain, but it is so worth reading. It's a quick and easy read, but some of the issues in the book are complex and really make you think about life.

Quote from the book:

"You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present"

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

I loved this book because of it's simplicity. The main character is a young boy just beginning high school. If you're an older adult, don't let that fact turn you away. I think everyone can learn something from this book. The style of writing is interesting because there are grammatical mistakes, but those are intentional to make it more authentic. The book is being made into a movie, so read it before the movie comes out!
