Love Me Some Sister Time!

The relationship between a girl and her sister is unique. There is no one you love like your sister, and there is no one you love to hate like her. I found a Hallmark card a while back that said, "A sister is someone who is always there and never goes away.... That was supposed to sound like a good thing." It's true, isn't it?

The inspiration for this lens came on the night before my sister got engaged. I saw her and her then-boyfriend, hugged them, and said goodnight. As I was driving home, I got a hair sad when I realized that the next time I saw her, she wouldn't just be my sister anymore, but she would be someone's fiancée. Weird. In a moment of sentimentalism, I wanted to watch a sister movie. I instantly pulled out my favorite one and enjoyed it.

There are some great sister movies out there. Some portray intimate aspects of sisters' relationships, other just show families with lots of girls interacting in various ways. There are also some movies that show how close to women can be, even if they aren't sisters. But they are like sisters. Here are some of my favorite sister movies!

In Her Shoes

The night before my sister got engaged, when I really wanted a sister movie, I didn't hesitate. This is the one I grabbed. I love it!

There is romance in it, but that is for sure the side story. The real story is about two sisters, an argument, and how they find each other again. Throughout it all, they are borrowing each other's shoes. (My sister and I never share shoes or clothes because we are built completely different and wear different sizes. Oh well.)

I also love this movie because Shirley MacLaine is one of my favorite actresses!

Because I Said So

This is one of my favorite movies! Not only is it a sister movie, but a great mother-daughter one. A single mom with three grown daughters just wants to see them happily married. The first two are, but the third is taking her time, so Mom tries to intervene. The interactions between the four women are hilarious and familiar. I love it!

Raising Helen

This movie is funny and sad at the same time. One of three sisters dies in the beginning, and the other two are faced with coping while raising her three children. It is hilarious and real and something you hope never happens to you. The two sisters have their share of spats, but in the end, they do was sisters do- they love one another.

Pride and Prejudice

In Jane Austen's book and the subsequent movie, "Pride and Prejudice," the main character, Lizzy, has four sisters. Most of the interaction is between the oldest two, Jane and Lizzy, but the adventures, heartaches, and relationships of the three younger ones are also seen. The mother of the family thinks of nothing but marrying off her daughters. My mom is one of five girls, so I often imagine it is what her family would have been like 150 years ago.

The Other Sister

In a family of three sisters, one of them is developmentally disabled. After being sent away for several years, she is back in the picture. Her parents and sisters all have differing opinions on what she should be allowed to do and how she should be treated. In the end, her plans are best.

Rumor Has it

This is a little less of a sister movie, but it is one of my favorites. It's the other side of the movie The Graduate. This movie tells the story of the "Robinsons." I love it! The whole thing starts when the main character's sister is getting married, and progresses through after the wedding.

Hanging Up

Hanging Up is a movie about three adult sisters caring for their aging father. Their careers and their father's failing health all combine to make a great movie about sister relationships and family. Plus, Walter Matthau is in it, and who doesn't love Walter?
