Great Things To See And Do During A Visit To Cape Cod
A Cape Cod vacation offers a number of things that an extended trip to other areas of the country simply cannot match. Cape Cod is a long peninsula protruding into the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the state of Massachusetts. A little over halfway out, the peninsula takes a sharp left and heads north. The Cape Cod area has a long history as a fishing and whaling center and also has provided many with some of the nicest vacation spots available in the Northeaster United States. The Cape, as it is referred to by locals, offers many high quality eating establishments and overnight accommodations in many of the wonderfully quaint communities and areas located there.
Whale Watching
There are a number of locations around the cape that cater to visitors seeking the opportunity to go whale watching. Venturing out on these watercraft is a great way to see the Cape Cod area from a completely different perspective. It is also a great way to chance a sighting of a true wonder of the deep, an actual whale. Different watercraft can provide different experiences too, everything from a large ship hosting hundreds of guests to a small boat with single digit guests is available. Seeing a whale up close is an unforgettable experience. Provincetown, Massachusetts

Provincetown is located on the very tip of the Cape Cod peninsula and is known for its beautiful beaches and active harbor. The town was not incorporated until 1727, though ships had harbored there for more than one hundred years. Initially the community was known for its fishing and whaling industry, but in the late 1890s a natural population of resident artists started to form and the reputation of the city was changed forever. Today, there are a number of historic sites that detail those early days of Provincetown, but there are also a number of art galleries, art museums, and working artists still there. Some of the highlights for tourists visiting Provincetown are the art galleries, stage performances, beach activities, and ocean going opportunities available there.

The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a great way to see Cape Cod in its more natural and undeveloped state. Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen
Another great opportunity to get off the paved roads and experience a more natural surrounding is a stop at the famous Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen. Located in the community of East Sandwich, the area is filled with incredible gardens and a number of trails that allow visitors to completely explore the area. There is also a working jam making kitchen on-site and visitors are encourage to both sample and purchase the wonderful jams and jellies made there.
Guided Tour of the Dunes
Various locations on Cape Cod still contain some of the rolling sandy dunes that the area is famous for. There are a number of businesses that cater to tourists looking for a way to get out and explore the area's beaches, and they offer a wide variety of ways to do so. From tram-like vehicles to large dune buggies, tour guides can lead visitors up, down and around the dunes and also fill them in on some of the more interesting details related to the area. Cape Cod Rail Trail
Built on the site of former railroad tracks, the Cape Cod Rail Trail covers more than twenty-five miles from the community of Dennis all the way to the town of Wellfleet. The level grade that the railroad required lends itself to this being an enjoyable place for travelers in any kind of physical shape. The trail, only recently completed, is paved the entire way and popular with hikers, walkers, bikers, and rollerbladers. This is an excellent way to see an extensive area of Cape Cod, and also a great way for a tourist to get out and stretch their legs in the beautiful outdoors.
Cape Cod Museum of Natural History
When travelers are looking for a little indoor entertainment should they tire of the sand and the surf, a great place to spend part of a day on Cape Cod is by visiting the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History. The museum is part science center and part educational site with many opportunities for children and adults to learn both by viewing standard museum exhibits as well as to participate in a number of hands-on exhibits too. One of the best kept secrets on the cape, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History offers tons of extras including day long science camps for children.
Charter Fishing
with its vast history tied to the fishing industry, many of the communities on Cape Cod offer a fine selection of businesses that charter fishing boats for the many travelers that come its way. Visitors can hire boats for themselves or a small group, or they can also participate on charter fishing boats that are catering to many individual fishermen at the same time. Fishing on Cape Cod or beyond into the Atlantic Ocean is a great way to create memories that last a lifetime. Cape Cod National Seashore
One of the primary reasons anyone comes to visit Cape Cod is to spend time on the shores where the water can come right up to their feet. The best place on Cape Cod to experience the beach is at Cape Cod National Seashore. The Cape Cod National Seashore was created in 1961 by President of the United States, and Massachusetts native, John F. Kennedy. The seashore is on the ocean facing side of the peninsula and covers almost forty miles in length. Among other things, some of the exciting and interesting things to do there include hike, bike, rollerblade, take a ranger guided canoe tour, view museums and visitor centers that detail the history of the area, and visit several historic structures. A trip to Cape Cod is not complete without a visit to the Cape Cod National Seashore.

- You've done a great job pointing out some of Cape Cod's best. I've never taken a dune tour, but I might just do it after your suggestion. The Wellfleet bay Sanctuary is an amazing place, I'd highly recommend that one. Nice work! Lensrolled this to my Cape Cod beaches lens.

- You know, I grew up in Rhode Island ... but I never spent any time on Cape Cod! How silly is that. I was out there briefly with my parents as a child, but that hardly counts as it was a short stay and I don't really remember it. Well, next time I'm back east for a visit (I live in Arizona now), I've GOT to get there. Really nice overview of the area. Great job.
