More Fire: How to Run the Kenyan Way

Used Price: $10.57

Having read many books on running over the years on all aspects of running I can sincerely say that "More Fire - How to run the Kenyan Way" is the best book on running I have read.
Already been a fan of the previous edition, this edition is even better and pushes the knowledge and insight about Kenyan running to the next level.

Unlike other books on running, which focus too much on the scientific and technical aspects of running "More Fire" is a result of in-depth analysis and evidence of how the Kenyan elite athletes train, how they live, how they race and their fundamental values, attitudes and behaviours, which drives them to excel and dominate in the world of running.

I strongly recommend the book to all the aspiring runners, athletic coaches or those involved in governing athletics, it is a must read. Many valuable lessons can be learnt from how the Kenyan's do it. --U. Bettag

Milers: Great milers and the races that defined them

When we think of the mile, we immediately think of Roger Bannister. His breaking the 4:00 barrier was a milestone (no pun intended) not just for running, but for our understanding of human physiology. Numerous runners have since followed his lead in the pursuit of excellence in four laps. These books profile the men who ran the mile, and the paths they took to achieving their success.

The Four Minute Mile

by Roger Bannister

The Four-Minute Mile, Fiftieth-Anniversary Edition

Amazon Price: $5.49 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $1.92

As a cross-country runner in high school this book by Roger Bannister was a great inspiration to me. His description of the assault on the 4 minute mile barrier is fascinating but also memorable are his recollections of the Helsinki Olympics (where Bannister failed to achieve a medal), and his success at the Commonwealth Games where the only two sub-4 minute milers met face to face for the first time.

It's now about 40 years since I first read the book and I was very pleased it was republished in a commemorative edition.

Reading the book again was a joy. The book went very quickly and had most of the excitement of when I first read it. It was not surprising tha the prose and impressions seemed less mature than when I first read them, but that was to be expected as Bannister wrote the book when he was in his twenties.

I was disappointed that the pictures were not the same as the original edition, with perhaps too many pictures of Bannister in later years. The original pictures of the Helsinki Olympics and other competitions were an integral part of the book and it's a shame that they were missing.

Bannisters achievement in breaking the Four Minute Mile was a milestone (pardon the pun), as was the fact that he did it as an amateur and while he was in the middle of his medical studies. In my opinion his book is also a great achievement and is certainly worth the read. --Zev Kaptowsky

The Perfect Mile

by Neal Bascomb

The Perfect Mile: Three Athletes, One Goal, and Less Than Four Minutes to Achieve It

Amazon Price: $3.50 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $2.59

The Perfect Mile takes the reader into the intimate worlds of three extraordinary men, all from diverse backgrounds and continents. Even though you're familiar that Roger Bannister eventually came out victorious as the first man to fun the mile in under four minutes, the drama and tension of the runners' race to become the first to break the barrier will keep you turning pages almost as fast as the men were running around the track.

Without divulging too much, I will say that near the book's end, when two of the three men are racing in the 1956 "Mile of the Century," the other runner, who because of military obligations is not able to participate, is masterfully woven into the race, almost as if he were actually racing--how he would have run that race, how he would have positioned himself among the two others, and how he possibly would have won the race. --CJB

Roger Bannister and the Four-Minute Mile

by John Bale

Roger Bannister and the Four-Minute Mile: Sports Myth and Sports History

Amazon Price: $43.87 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $20.00

Roger Bannister and the Four-Minute Mile does more than detail the history of a sports star. It is a testimonial to the legend of Roger Bannister but it also invites the reader to reconsider the very words often used to describe him - notably "hero" and "gentleman amateur." Informed by contemporary sports science, the text also questions the significance of the four-minute mile per se.

Thoroughly researched, this book gives fascinating insights into the history of track racing as well as early athletic training methods and the beginnings of sports science.

The first rigorous historical study of Bannister's sporting life and the man behind the legend reveals an ambivalent athlete - highly achievement-orientated and scientific in his approach but also in love with the freedom of running sensuously in nature, in contrast to the constraints of modern sport. --Editorial Review

Sub 4:00

by Chris Lear

Sub 4:00: Alan Webb and the Quest for the Fastest Mile

Amazon Price: $6.00 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $0.01

Chris Lear has done it again! Following an exellent debut with "Running With the Buffaloes" he comes back with "Sub 4:00" -- a great account of Alan Webb's first and only season at the University of Michigan.

Lear is the only guy out there writing about the collegiate running scene as most books in the running section at your bookstore revolve around training logs or how to run your first 10K. It's about time someone took a different path and I'm glad Lear has done so.

Webb's tumultuous season at UM is well-depicted. The tough workouts, the injuries, and most importantly, the hot and cold relationship Webb has with his collegiate coach. Webb is pulled in a couple of different directions, whether to turn pro and go back and train under his high school coach, where he had great success; or stay at UM where he has friends and training partners. After awhile one can tell where Webb is going to end up.

What makes Lear's books so good is he gets right into the action. Just like his first book, he has intimate access to the team, it's workouts, meetings, and private moments. He's with Webb in the residence halls, on solitary and team workouts, at the meets, and even on the road in his car. Lear isn't an outside observer, he's right there. Also, the main supporting character, Brannen, gets his fair share of coverage.

This isn't just a book for runners, but anyone interested in athletics, particularly college athletics and how the system works and how coaches are under pressure to win -- yes, even so-called minor sport track and field coaches.

I highly recommend this excellent book and hope Lear has more coming down the road. --Timothy R. Sullivan

I can understand why the general public didn't buy this book. It's appeal is to those of us who have undergone the "Trial of Miles." Like Once a Runner's Cassidy, Scott gave it everything and sacrificed much, as did his family. Yet, like Cassidy, he didn't win the Gold, so the ignorant have forgotten him. Even so, he should be remembered for his dedication to the sport and his willingness to give everything, to be the front runner, to not hide until the final lap, so, like Prefontaine, he is an inspiration to runners. A very good book. I wish him and his family well.

The Jim Ryun Story

Amazon Price: $89.99 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $89.99

This is one of the most straight forward and exciting books ever written on Track and Field. Corder Nelson, one of the famed editors and writers from Track and Field News, captures Jim Ryun the competitor who was the first high schooler to break 4 minutes and of course later set the World Record that lasted for almost 9 years. From Track and Field News' archives, the book is complimented by Rich Clarkson's wonderful photographs of Ryun racing in action shots throughout the book capturing the excitement of races and drama. Clarkson was the premier track and field photographer for his time. For example, Clarkson captures Ryun stealing a glance at Peter Snell at one of their two races at the starting line and then has a running pictorial of the race. This is a truly exciting book capturing the work outs, the races and determination of Jim Ryun and his coach Bob Timmons. Perhaps the most exciting race is Ryun's 1964 Olympic trials race where he and famed miler Jim Grelle duel all the way to the line with Grelle diving for the finish. Only minutes later does either know who made the team. Ryun had an amazing tough mental ability to work hard, just look at the picture of Ryun running up an incredibly steep Kansas hill with the camera looking down on him. The race descriptions are fantastic and Nelson makes you feel that you are watching the race unfold in person with his descriptions and Clarkson's pictures. This book was released before the 68 Olympics but it's still a great book on a wonderkid's development. A reprint second release is desperately needed. --Daniel Hurley

Amazon Price: $8.84 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $3.73

I was a high school runner when Coe and Ovett burst upon the world Track and Field scene. I was awed by their performances and read everything I could about them, which wasn't much on this side of the Atlantic. Seeing them (and Cram) compete head-to-head in person at the 1984 Olympic Games was such a thrill for me and my late father, who was also a huge T&F fan. Butcher's excellent writing truly took me back to those exciting times. This outstanding book also provides clear, fascinating and entertaining insights into Coe's and Ovett's rise to the world stage of T&F. Their personalities, how they got into running, the discovery of their talents, the ups and downs of their training and careers, the relationships and people who influenced them - it's all here in this eminently readable short book. As an added bonus, Butcher also recounts the "British Tradition" of miling, its rich history as well as other famous pairs of nineteenth and twentieth century milers. This is a fun read and a fantastic contribution to the small but growing genre of T&F books. --D. Antokal

The true story of the incomparable Glenn Cunningham is one full of extraordinary perserverance and determination. He regains his ability to walk and run. His family suffers through depression era Kansas farm life and Glenn never gives up his dream of an education. His quest to become a world class runner is truly inspiring. The life he carves for himself after his running career ends is even more remarkable. GLENN CUNNINGHAM IS A TRUE AMERICAN HERO. An outstanding book.

I'm an emotional sap and cry at the drop of a hat, but if any one can read this book and not go through a few tissues they either have incredible emotional control or are extremely cold. I started this book yesterday after I got home, around lunch time. I finished it (250 pages) last night. I don't think I've ever done that before. It reads fast. It is the tragic, yet wonderful, true story of John Baker - one of American's best milers in 1969. He teaches elementary school kids and truly lives a life of purpose; a life well lived.

Buy this book now and read it, but stock up on the tissues. You'll come away wishing you had known him. This is mostly a book about teaching kids and heroic character and doesn't talk much about running. --William Wright

Amazon Price: $143.89 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now
Used Price: $115.10

[In the 1870s] Walter George rode history's winds of change, setting records, covering astonishing mileage between meets on the new railroads, crossing the Atlantic in a new steamship to beat American star Lon Myers, pioneering a difficult path between elitist amateurism and the corrupt professional circuit, and giving the new sport a potent place in the public imagination. One two-man mile race attracted crowds of over 30,000 to a stadium that held 8,000. The streets were jammed, gates broken, fences toppled, and George and his rival crawled to the start on ladders held on the heads and shoulders of the tight-packed mob. George ran 4:12.8, a world record by four seconds, and a performance 50 years ahead of its time. --Roger Robinson

A too-short life with a tragic end, remembered still for the great triumphs he enjoyed.

As a runner, I love a good running book. The Greatest - the biography of Haile Gebrselassie - a man who dominated distance running for a decade - was extremely inspiring. It balanced the racing with the personal story of Haile, along with a great overview of the Ethiopian running scene and the opportunities and challenges facing the country. In addition to being a champion athlete, Haile has become a very successful Ethiopian businessman and the vignettes about his businesses, why he does them (when he clearly doesn't have to), and how he is focused on continuing to help Ethiopia evolve as a country was powerful. Heroic running, riveting race stories, good Ethiopian history, the passing of the torch of a champion to the next generation, and a guy that everyone would like - what more could you want from a running biography? --Bradley Feld

The illustrations are truly amazing nearly every page or second page there are coloured "good quality" pictures of really interesting things. This is a book that you would expect to pay well over $25 for because the printing is just done to perfection. I highly recommend this book for any one who is interested in running. This is a wonderfully strange and inticing little book. I came to the running revolution in the mid 70's with all the other boomers. 30 years, 23 marathons, hundreds of road races and 20+ years of coaching and I'm still addicted. My heroes were Ryun, Liquori, Prefontaine, Shorter and Rodgers. There was always this myth of a man named Gerry Lindgren who may have been the greatest high school runner ever. Legend had it that he ran ungodly mileage 150, 175, 200 miles a week. 50 mile runs, 80 mile runs. Lindgren has given us a special little book that recounts his high school years and his emergence as a world class runner. It is a beautiful window into his world. Writing it as his shadow allows him to use the third person which, in this case, works very well. His replays of his races and his internal dialogue are worth the price of the book. This is a great little read. --Michael Dennisuk

If you want to read a story about a person who has experienced such great tragedy but has used the experience to love and forgive and to help end the cycle of hate and educate us to this effect, then this book is for you. The book alternates through stories of school boy life in Burundi, running, and genocide. I am a runner in Austin Texas who hears great things about Gilbert Tuhabonye (now a running coach in Austin), but this is not a running book. This is a book about a man's dream to do well in school in order to get a U.S. college track scholarship. Despite being a victim of unthinkable horror he succeeds in doing so. But his greatest success is his ability to teach forgiveness and the book is a vehicle for doing so. The book is an easy read of a worthwhile tale. --James M. Gelb

It does give some training insights, but mostly in the context of the mini-biographies. It's first chapter focuses on Emil Zatopek, who had to be the gutsiest runner ever. Other great Olympic distance performers profiled in the book include Lasse Viren, Kip Keino, Sebastian Coe, Said Aouita and Frank Shorter, as well as Bill Rodgers, Arturo Barrios, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Alberto Juantorena, Grete Waitz, and Ingrid Kristiansen.

Kenny Moore is the real deal. Fourth in the Munich Olympic marathon doesn't happen by accident. This is a collection of pieces about various elite athletes Moore has met over the years.

Moore's insights are fascinating. "Best Efforts" gives you a glimpse of the minds of the elites. The piece on Ron Clarke, who would always take the race out hard because he thought it was dishonest to do anything else, is especially intriguing. I also enjoyed the articles on Mary Decker, the Experiment, and John Akii-Bua. Moore's writing about his own life experiences as a child, training under Bowerman and alongside Pre, and then in the Olympics, is equally enthralling. --M. Eichenlaub

I really enjoyed this book. Other people may go for the swagger of Pre or the domination of a Salazar or Rodgers. But, of all the the runners I've read about, Edelen is the one I identify with most. I suppose it's because he's more of an unsung hero of American running.

The book is fairly well written, and unlike many biographies, it does not drag on with boring unneeded details. It documents the man that Edelen was and shows excerpts from his training to give insight, to those of us who run ourselves, the kind of grueling training he did.

I started running ~ 2 yrs ago. My wife got me the book, but I hadn't heard of Dick so the book sat. One evening I picked it up to see what it was all about and I was instantly and uncontrollably sucked in. Dick's story starts in HS where he went out for the football team, which lasted a few minutes. Then a friend suggested XC, and Dick fell in love with what turned out to be his calling -- running.

The story refers to 5/10K events, and explains how Dick got into Marathons (a whim). It then follows the course of the multitude of Marathons he ran in.

Dick had his battles in life too, as we all do, a theme that repeated itself. Dick had some very tough times, but in the end he prevailed. Big time!

My friend Mat just got back from Boston Marathon '03; Mat brought back an autograph from Dick for me. Having read his book, and knowing what a great guy Dick is, this will be treasured for years to come.

She weaves together the story of her own personal running history, the history of womens long distance running, her quest to have the marathon included as a womens event in the Olympics (a monumental feat), including her own interpersonal struggles with the men in her life and development of her career along the way. Her writing was very candid, occasionally funny, and she had a wonderful way of including and articulating some of her more trivial thoughts and incidents, which brought the book to life. --L. I had heard of Tarzan Brown when I was young. He seemed a mysterious character, with not much known about him. I enjoyed learning about him, what a really great runner he was in a time when 100 runners in a race was a lot. The author interviewed many of those who knew him, including his wife, and gives an idea what it must have been like to be a Narragansett Indian in those days.

For anyone who loves the freedom of running (which Tarzan did), and is interested in life in New England 70 years ago, this book is a real find. You will also learn more about Johnny Kelley (the elder), Clarence DeMar, Les Pawson, Bricklayer Kennedy, etc. This was a time when money was scarce, and runners had to be amateurs- Tarzan once won a refrigerator in a race, but he had no electricity so gave it away. At one point he won 17 races in a row; at his peak he was brilliant. He won consecutive marathons over a 2-day period, taking a night train from NY to NH to get to the 2nd one. Tarzan had quite a spirit, and I thank the author for his painstaking research. --Gordon A. FitzGerald

The book comprises of Dean Karnazes memories and experiences being a runner and athlete in his younger years and re-discovering the joys and challenges of running, right after his 30th birthday celebration.

The story is told starting out with a smart and captivating intro of ordering food on the road while running and then flashbacking to his early childhood memories. The book seems to be a mixture between autobiography, race and course reviews, training advice and a little on diet.

While not shy to brag about his accomplishments and ambitions, Dean balances these out with candid accounts of his mistakes, limitations, and struggles.

This book is truly a great inspirational read from a great athlete. I read the book in two afternoons and when I was finished I went out on a 3-hour run. A great reminder of why I've always enjoyed running. --Gabriel E. Borlean

I read the reviews before buying and was a little reluctant; however, I decided a while ago I wanted to read it. I bought it anyway. Pam writes on a very personal level and tells of things many people would never have the courage to reveal to others. I thought this was a great book and am so glad I bought it. Be your own judge and don't let other people decide whether or not you will like something or someone. You might miss out on a lot of good things and people if you let someone else make the choice. I would recommend Dean K's book as well rather than compare this book to it. They both are great reads and very motivational! Any book that makes you want to get outside and take to the street, trail, etc. is a plus. --C. Ralls

Mike Bouscaren's narrative on ultrarunning is both compelling and entertaining. Having no background in long distance running, I found Mike's recounting of his experiences very educational from the physical aspects of the sport, as well as the mental drama that each participant has to deal with. His unique style of writing presents the reader an opportunity to " run in his shoes " as he makes his journey thru 25 separate events over a seven year span. A must read for the occasional runner, as well as for those who pursue their dreams in ultramarathon running. --Bondman

As an avid runner and ultrarunner, it was refreshing to see the sport from his eyes. I had first learned of him in the documentary on the Badwater 135,Running on the Sun. this book chronicles how he first learned about the race, his training and time leading up to the race, and the race itself. It was a great book. I recommend it to runners and non-runners alike. --ultrarunnermeri

I first read "Running Wild" several years ago while recovering from a running injury and it not only gave me the confidence to come back from the injury but also became my running companion. For a runner it is a spiritual connection to the joy and mystery that running can be as well as historic proof of the origins of American running. John Annerino is an incredible man whose courage and love of the wilderness together with his deep spiritual commitment to the land, it's history and it's people make "Running Wild" a masterpiece. --Donnamarie Barnes

I have known the author since the 80's....He and I share the same finish time, 23 hours, 34 minutes, but done in different years. So how did he do? After reading it I can say the book does indeed provide a good description for what it's like and what it takes to run the trail. He wrote this book twenty years after the event, working from personal notes he made in 1986.... this was the high point of J.D.'s athletic career and I think he felt compelled to write it all to preserve the wholeness of it all.... Another reason for the detail was his intent to give prospective Western States runners a guide for this adventure, to let them know what to expect as the trail wears them down and presents new challenges with each hill, canyon, and stream crossing. Following each chapter are a few paragraphs of his recent perspectives about that particular piece of trail, or about running in general, or about living and aging and what it all means to him.... Many uninspired personal accounts I have read of ultrarunning events can be paraphrased in two simple sentences. It was a really long run. It hurt a lot. But if J.D. were to distill his book down to its essence it would come out not as two choppy sentences but as a descriptive and meaninful haiku to live by. --Mark Haymond

Neal Jamison's collection of essays by ultrarunners is delightful in its diversity. There are racers who tell of their speed, and adventurers who describe their wilderness survival experiences. There are winners. There are amazing triumphs over incredible adversities.

But most fascinating are the honest remarks by people who fell short, who "failed", and who in the process succeeded in learning something important about themselves. My favorite of all, by Keith Knipling:

"In the process of completely exhausting myself, I connect with an inner part of me ordinarily veiled by the everyday distractions of life. During that short time spent on a trail in the mountains, my life is reduced to its simplest terms. Most ultrarunners are people who find goodness and joy in difficult times, who see beyond the misery to the beauty of nature, and who truly realize the elemental and important aspects of life. Going for a run always clears my head, but running 100 miles distills my soul." --Mark E. Zimmermann

If you are a runner, adventure racer, ultrarunner, or interested in extreme events, Extreme Running is for you. I love this book. Extreme Running features sections on races on the seven continents. Twenty-four events are profiled in the chapters. Each event is shown with plenty of photos, race information, distance, time of year, field size, ascent and decent data, contact and Web information, and maps or an altitude profile. As you read the chapters, you get a feel for the event and its difficulty. The Marathon des Sables is featured in 16 pages, Badwater in 10, while others are covered in several pages. The photos are fantastic - making you feel in the race. While not inclusive of all extreme events on the seven continents, the book does a great job of showing you popular events and enough information to help you decide if you could do any one of them. This is a book that some might call a "coffee table" book - it is that beautiful. It appeals to me because I love the draw and challenge of these extreme events. As the author of Fixing Your Feet, I patch the feet of these athletes, and have been to several of them and can attest to the descriptions as accurate. --Jon Vonhof

Inspiring story about one of the greatest coaches and interesting men I have ever read about. The thing about Percy is that he lived what he preached, from the death bed in his mid 40's to running marathons 2 years later, and then on to coach some of the greatest athletes the world has ever seen in John Landy and Herb Elliot. With his spartan methods that clashed with the rise of modern training, one can't help but think that much of what Percy believed could be mixed with modern training to create a better athlete.

A story that I often think about while I have been running the last few weeks is one of Percy, he had been running with a group of runners including Elliot, the others had finished well before an old Cerutty and when Cerutty crossed the line he collapsed in a great deal of pain. The other runners fearing for Cerutty crowded around him, while on the ground in pain Percy then looked up and said, "You boys may be able to run faster, but you will never be able to run as hard." That symbolizes much of what Cerutty is about, violent exercise to strain the organism so it will rebuild stronger.

The book isn't perfect though, the first few chapters don't paint much of a picture of Percy's childhood. Sims also deals with Percy's darker side and his obsession with being the centre of attention. Overall an inspiring book. --ridleyben

This the true story of a high school cross country team in Salem Ohio that grows from "also rans" to champions (with a lot of controversy in between). The story is quite compelling. The fact that it was written by two of the athletes on the team will stun you. It is extremely well written. I would have never guessed it was the product of two high school students.

In my estimation it becomes the third volume of the cross country trilogy which started with "Running with the Buffaloes" and continued with "God on the Starting Line". It offers a unique perspective of the high school runner. It is the season seen through there eyes. It rings true with their hopes, dreams, disapointments and triumphs. I'm not sure anyone has written so clearly about the "feeling" of racing.

This a very well written little gem of a book. --Michael Dennisuk

His race descriptions and training methods can be appreciated by runners, coaches and fans of distance running. Highly recommended! --J. Enright

Training Books: The best books on the subject of training and racing

It's great to read about great runners and how they achieved their success. But for those of us who want to get there ourselves, we need to understand the fundamentals behind why some things work and why some don't. That means learning about the physiology of running, about the science behind different training methods, and about what we can do today to make us better tomorrow. These books all cover the topic of training, and are incredible resources for every runner in their pursuit of their potential.

VERY detailed and explains WHY certain training recommendations are made. I'm a physician and was surprised how technical this book was. If you are not scientifically minded, this is still a great reference, but do not plan to read this cover to cover unless you took a lot of biology in college. I have used this book for help with an injury and the recommendations and explanations seem very sound. If you are merely looking for training schedules, there are other places to find them, but this book has a wide variety of "formulas" for race preparation. For serious runners, this book is a bargain. Probably cheaper and more useful than any running shoes or other equipment you are putting on your wish list. --F. Klein

A book like this is an absolute delight for the thinking runner who not only wants to know what to do, but also why. The book is very practical too, as the instructions are distilled into just a few tables - all easy to use. You will learn Daniels' proven methods to improve endurance, lactate threshold, VO2Max and mechanical running speed. The real beauty of this book is that it can be used by elite runners and slow beginners alike; the tables accommodate all runners and tell us exactly what to do based on our recent race times. To those who say his theories are outdated, show me the results where Americans pounding the intervals or following a Daniels type plan are beating those like the Kenyans and the Japanese marathoners and Paula Radcliffe who train much more like Lydiard suggests. It's not a coincidence that Deena Kastor and Meb Keflezighi became the first two Americans to win Olympic marathon medals in 20 years. They are also two of the few Americans who follow a Lydiard-based training philosophy. The Kenyans do not train at LT pace all the time. Anyone who knows how they train knows that they train much like Lydiard suggests.

Yes, his writings are hard to read. He has a great mind when it comes to running technique but not quite so great when it comes to writing style. However, the wealth of wisdom in his writings is worth working yourself through the less than spectacular writing style if you are interested in racing performance. --hillrunr

For the Sheehan neophyte, let me say this, this is NOT a book to learn how run better. It IS a book to become a better person. Dr. Sheehan is simply one of us; a runner who happens to write. The beauty of this book is that Sheehan doesn't candy coat his stories. He tells running as it is, as he is. You'll read this book and continually say, "My god, that's it, that's what I feel, that's how I am too." Soon, things you'd suspected about yourself, become clearer. Questions like, "Why do you run?", begin to have meaningful answers.

I have read tons about running and if I had to rank them, all Dr. Sheehan's books would be on the top of the list (But "R&B" is the best of his stuff, so start there). If you want the definitive book on all the technical details about running, get Glover's "Competetive Runner's Handbook" (make sure "Competetive" is in the title). If you want or need helping understanding life, read all of Sheehan's stuff. Heck those two books (Sheehan & Glover) are really all you need for years of PR's and spiritual growth. --Gary Dotzler

I'm 23 and have been running regularly for about 12 years, though only semi-competitively for about a year. In my sophomore year in college, I was training for the possibility of going into OCS and ended up overtraining. I suffered a relatively serious stress fracture by doing the things that the author of this book warns against. I recently completed a marathon using the techniques in this book, and was amazed at the improvement in my time, and the way my body felt after the race. These techniques are solid, especially for experienced runners looking to improve their distances/times. The Eastern philosophy sprinkled throughout the book is entertaining and, as with all philosophy, good brain candy to chew on. --Blake Larkin

I see (and am passed) by the younger crowd now, wearing their expensive running shoes, running clothing, running watches, running heart monitors, running glasses, running water bottles, running snacks, etc., etc., and wonder "why?" This book talks about the mental side of running and the way you can tap that something within that lets you go farther and faster then you ever thought you could. It also speaks on how running brings one closer to true realizations about your life. If your believe running is about more then miles and you see your running as a time of reflection for your mind, body, and spirit then you should pick up this book. Instead of just telling you about that experience it gives a framework from which to understand and appreciate that experience. --Ramsey Piazza

If you are a runner, you may have experienced the mental benefits that running provides. You may have also felt a spiritual presence while running, perhaps saying a prayer or working through personal problems while on the trail. In this extraordinary book, Joslin explores this mind/body connection and gives many different ways to experience the spiritual side of the sport. He shares meditative techniques developed over many years and very rich personal experiences with excerpts from his running journal. The book is well thought-out and written with a great deal of humility and care. This is one that I will read again and again. It changed the way I approach running. I also think about this book throughout the day, even when I am not running. A great book! --April Hitchinson

History and Sociology of Running: Ambitious books about complex topics

The history of running is filled with characters, events, and advancements. Many of these are captured in their own books, but sometimes an author strives to capture something a little bigger: historical trends, sociological explanations for success, or simply the total scope of distance running. These are those books.

This book is a must read for anybody that is interested in running. Everyone always wonders why the Kenyans are such good runners? This detailed, and interesting, book allows you to learn and understand the people of Kenya, and also why they are such good runners. Throughout their turbulent history it seems as though games, or sporting events, have been an important part of their culture. Because of their deep rooted cultural activities, as well as the colonial influence from the British, the Kenyans have been able to excel at events that revolve around running. Bale and Sang bring fourth a lot of information that allows you to learn about running in Kenya, and also the impact the Kenyans have had on runners around the world yesterday, today, and into the future. --A customer

This is a great book for those who care to know more about how the American greats have trained. Mark Bloom ranked the 30 best American men and 20 best American women, then proceeded to write a brief (2 page) bio for each one, followed by a page detailing their training habits. Some of the bios (Gerry Lindgren) are amazing and the training schedules are pretty useful for getting new ideas or getting some insight into what it takes to be a great runner. I don't agree with all of his rankings, but at the same time, I can't say that he was unreasonable either. Also, the book quite nicely refrains from preaching ("this is what you need to do") and just tells a nice little story for each runner. Definitely a worthwhile addition to a runner's library. --Brett Kmiec

If you are a runner (especially a marathoner) you have to get this book. It goes through every marathon in Olympic history, giving each race history, events, course, statistics, etc. It is very thorough, while pacing itself to get in all the Olympic marathons into a single volume. And, it was written in an interesting and readable manner.

The competition and sport of the races themselves give a great basis for an exciting read.

If you are doing a research project (like I was) this was the only book I would recommend - or, at least the first book. I could not find a book anywhere that showed the 1960 Rome Olympic course. Martin and Gynn had it. In fact, their race course map was better than the map a friend obtained for me from the Italian Olympic Library (Federazione Italiana Di Ateletica Leggera). --Doulos

Some of the people define themselves through running while others find it an important adjunct to their lives, the place where they find renewal or even peace. Among the women we meet are a 9-11 widow who runs her first marathon to honor her lost husband, and an American Indian teenager who feels the spirits of her ancestors running beside her. The authors, both avid runners and veteran news reporters, know their material and tell a compelling story. --A Pennsylvania reader

Running Fiction: The characters are fictional, but the stories are true

The book was great, easily one of the best I've ever read. The only times I ever put it down were to eat, sleep and run. There was one quote from Cassidy that i feel sums up the book, the main character, and competative running. I don't know how some one can read this and not be in the mood to run. "It's a simple choice: We can all be good boys and wear our letter sweaters around and get our little degrees and find some nice girl to settle, you know, down, with...take up what a friend of ours calls the hearty challenges of lawn care...Or we can blaze! Become legends in our own time, strike fear in the heart of mediocre talent everywhere! We can scald dogs, put records out of reach! Make the stands gasp as we blow into an unearthly kick from three hundred yards out! We can become God's own messenger delivering the dreaded scrolls! We can race dark Satan himself till he wheezes fiery cinders down the back straightaway! They'll speak our names in hushed tones, 'Those guys are animals' they'll say! We can lay it on the line, bust a gut, show them a pair of clean heels. We can sprint the turn on a spring breeze and feel the winter leave our feet. We can, by God, let our demons loose and just wail on!" --Joe-sph

Again to Carthage

Again to Carthage

Used Price: $3.63

"Once a Runner" is the greatest novel about running ever written (according to Runners World) and "Again to Carthage" is better. Mr. Parker has created a sequel that is superior to his first "classic" in so many ways. He picks up Quentin Cassidy's story about 7 - 10 years down the road. He has completed law school and has settled into a very comfortable lifestyle in Palm Beach. Several losses shake QC's world and lead him back to his first love ... running. QC gets his old friend Bruce Denton (the thinly disguised Jack Bachelor character) to coach him in his quest to make one more Olympic team ... in the Marathon.

Mr. Parker understands runners like few other writers of fiction. He understands the mind of the runner, the will of the runner, and the idiocy of the runner. Mr. Parker's writing is much more polished in this book. He creates such beautiful visuals of QC training in the mountains of North Carolina that I wanted to hop in the car and drive there for a run.

This is a must read for every runner!! There are a lot of subtle references that runners of the last three decades will pick up. This stands proudly along side "Once a Runner" as one of the greatest running books ever written. --Michael Dennisuk

A very good book, although it is a bit dated with some of the references to training, women's running etc. I read it in two days; it is a novel where the suspension builds until the last paragraph. It tells the story of an athlete who wants to be the best miler in the world and will stop at nothing to win the gold medal. It shows the struggles and sacrifices that he goes through over 7 years, and is a good book for distance runners to read. It has a very surprising ending that I had to re-read and think about a few times to completely understand. A very recommended book :) --A customer

This book should be in the hands of every runner. The short stories are amazing. The different portrayals of running can appeal to anyone, from beginner to advanced. Some of the stories will bring you to your race days and get your adrenaline running as if you are running the race. I can only read them one at a time because I get to pumped up and have to relax.

The poems are very eclectic. They capture the crazy thoughts that go through your mind while you are running. They also are beautiful descriptions of a very basic act. I loved them all. Every once in a while I read one before I go run. They make you think, and isn't that what happens on a run. These poems give you good mind fuel. --A customer

Telling the tale of Colin Wornock, an Irish runner striving to break into the upper reaches of international track, The Other Kingdom does what many other books about running does not, it goes past just the running aspect of the characters life. The book has a number of sub plots that all intertwine, that of Colin's mind, his relationship with his more experienced lover, that with a family friend who doubles as an analyzing professor, his training partners and finally his feisty coach. At times the plot can be weighted down with hypothetical conversation about the nature of heroism and pushing oneselves but all in all serves a greater purpose of Colin's final victory over himself. --James McKeon

I purchased a well worn, musty smelling paperback edition of this book published in 1967 and thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful writing as well as the tactile sensation of thumbing my way through the cherished, yellowed pages. Brilliantly executed "tales of working class life and morals" are great to read--but none better than Chapter One about the Runner in the title. So well done, in fact, that my interest in the other stories quickly waned.

For reading pleasure, I highly recommend this collection. For runners, especially, Chapter One is worth the purchase price. Now I'm eager to see the Tom Courtenay movie version, which is apparently excellent, too. --Nelson Aspen

I waited for six months to read Dan's book, and I finished it in about 5 hours. It was fast-moving and interesting--a nice debut.

However, I would hesitate to recommend it to anyone who has not been a part of the NCAA distance running experience. The characters he describes and events he details are strikingly familiar to those of us who run, but they would be just a strikingly foreign to those who have never competed at a high level. Readers who do not comprehend the drive of a distance runner would likewise not fully comprehend the forces behind many of the book's major events.

It's comforting, though perhaps a tad disturbing, to see that many collegiate runners live the same life I did in college. Dan's book was probably as nostalgic for me as it was for him, and I'm sure that most runners would agree. --George Darden

"The Champion Maker" is a strong first effort by new author Kevin Joseph. The book describes the plight of Nick Vance and his protégé "Bullet" Gardner as they grapple with the origin of "Bullet"'s incredible speed and endurance. I would characterize the book as a thriller that deals with both competitive track as well as the science and social implications of genetic engineering. The book is thought-provoking, entertaining and will likely appeal to a wide audience. As a scientist, I was particularly impressed with the book's accuracy with regard to scientific content.

The story has a good pace, well-developed characters and an element of humor. I found the mix of humor and action reminded me of Nelson Demille's style. The novel was engrossing and managed to deliver a satisfying ending unlike many other thrillers I've read. Furthermore, the story line was not ridiculously far-fetched, nor was it riddled with holes and inconsistencies as I have seen in many books of this type. On the whole, it was a very enjoyable read leaving me looking forward to future offerings from this author. --TNugent

Taylor is a professional British comic writer, which shows: the book's well written, funny, and British. British in a P. G. Wodehouse, not a ribald way. Much of the humor derives from his observations of runners' everyday peculiarities, most of which may be seen in the new world as well. The book is also a bit sad, because (I think) Taylor tried to overcome middle aged unfitness too quickly - to run the NY Marathon - and paid a price. The price was all post-NY so I'll not reveal details. But check his 1/2 marathon time and his NY time: the former predicts over 20 minutes better than he ran in NY. Check also his training heart rates: too high. It's fair to assume he ran the marathon before he was ready. But as he writes the "marathon"'s a unique brand; who'd want to read about his travails trying to run merely 13.1 miles? --Alex Stewart

Every runner realizes that they are being stupid when they chance that tornado warning for a quick 5 miler, but many don't realize that there is a whole addicted population out there running around hoping they can outrun the tornado when it so rudely interrupts that run. Every runner should read this book to have a good laugh at themselves, a feeling of unity with other crazy runners, a feeling of superiority over those crazy arm flailers, and a frankly, just to take a few hours off of running to give those knees a break. Of course, afterwards, go out for a celebratory 10K. --Megan M. Frost

Every runner knows this, and marvels at it, and finds it hard to wholly describe: Running will change your life. These four dozen essays capture the power of running to change and shape our existence, to elevate us, to inspire and strengthen us in all our pursuits. They were selected for the fine quality of their writing, the emotional strength of the stories, and for their narrative drama. Collectively they are motivational, inspirational, and instructive, thus making a fascinating book for dewy beginners and grizzled veterans alike. --Editorial Review

Running and Philosophy

Running and Philosophy: A Marathon for the Mind (Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture)

This is one of the best books in the whole philosophy and pop culture genre.

For philosophers, the essays feel like they come very naturally out of the topic. They are wide-ranging but all grounded in running--no stretches to get the philosophy in. It's as effortless as a comfortable pace can be.

For runners, there is an informative development of ideas that you've probably started to have in your own running, but haven't seen through this far.

Fun, challenging, motivating. --The Synthesis

I have tried becoming a "runner" many times in the past..I was on the "brink" once again when I read this book and have now been running 4-5 days a week since reading the book about 2 months ago.

The author makes you realize how anyone can enjoy, and even become addicted to this elusive, seemingly insane activity. Unlike many other running books, he doesn't ever say "you just have to really want it", he just tells his story, in which, after many years of inactivity and weight gain, he took up running at age 43.

The focus of this book is on enjoying the process, not the end result (how many min. it takes you to run a mile) of running. If you are looking for nutrition or speed advice, this is not the book for you. If you want an inspiration easy read, this IS the book! --Joellen Shannon

I'm a "senior", "middle-of-the-pack" runner and been at this for 30 yrs, completed 7 marathons and read most of the books concerning the subject, but found this one to be truly original. Running is basically a simplistic sport but to extend oneself to the extent to complete a marathon requires a special effort which this book manages to capture better than any other I've read so far. A must for anyone interested in running or those trying to figure out what makes people do this crazy stuff. Easy reading and wonderful photography! --Victor L. Randolph

I want to buy this book for everyone I know because I firmly believe, after reading this book and having run my first marathon, that ANYONE can do it. I became so involved in the stories of these people, I couldn't put the book down and when I reached the end, I wanted more. So I ran my own marathon. I opened the book again, after I'd run the 26.2 mile monster, and randomly picked one of the stories...I started to cry because it suddenly meant so much to me. If you read this book, not only will you want to run a marathon, you'll believe you can make it happen. --J. Burcham

This book was given to me by a training partner a few days before my first marathon. Just flipping through the book, I found quote after quote that I connected with. Others gave me great inspiration. They were so good, I decided to read the book from cover to cover and couldn't put the book down. I love Mark's comentary on each subject "Training", "Coaches", "Fear", "Pain", "The Marathon". I want to stock up on this book so I can give it as gifts to my running friends! --Victoria Krueger
