Doggie Bites

Savory Meat Flavor

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 egg
2 (2.5 oz) jars of strained baby food (beef, chicken, lamb, etc.)
6 teaspoons canola oil
2/3 cup water or broth

DIRECTIONS:
Preheat oven to 350º. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Stir until too stiff, then use hands to knead. You may add more water in small amounts if too stiff or a little flour if too sticky to handle.

When dough is smooth, begin pinching small pieces of dough and palm rolling to form bite-sized (marble-sized) doggy bites. Place on cookie sheet and flatten slightly. Continue until all dough is rolled. Place cookie sheet in oven and bake for 20-25 minutes.

Remove treats from oven and allow to cool completely. If bites feel soft in the center and you wish them to be harder, turn off the oven and leave the cookie sheet in for up to an hour.

When ready, store bites in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Treats should be used within two weeks (since they do not contain preservatives), but can be frozen for up to six months.

Makes approximately 190-200 doggy bites.

Help for Homeless Animals

Not Everyone In Need Can Ask For Help

Help for Homeless Animals

This is a video I created to share with my middle school students in preparation for a project to help our local Humane Society. The pictures are from the Internet and the ones at the end are all animals up for adoption now at our local Humane Society. This is such a huge problem, but there are steps everyone can do to help.

Resources for Animal Lovers

What Can You Do To Help?

Want to help animals in your community? Check out the following links for resources and ideas.
Petfinders.com
Petfinder is an on-line, searchable database of animals that need homes. It is also a directory of over 10,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the USA, Canada and Mexico. Our mission is to use Internet technology and the resources it can generate to:

1. Increase public awareness of the availability of high-quality adoptable pets
2. Increase the overall effectiveness of pet adoption programs across North America to the extent that the euthanasia of adoptable pets is eliminated
The Animal Rescue Site
The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need - providing food for some of the 27 million unwanted animals given to shelters in the U.S. every year. Over 10 million animals are put to death every year in the U.S. alone because they are abandoned and unwanted.

Each click on the purple "Click Here to Give - it's FREE" button at The Animal Rescue Site provides food and care for a rescued animal living in a shelter or sanctuary.
ASPCA: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty To Animals
The ASPCA was founded in 1866 as the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. The Society was formed to alleviate the injustices animals faced then, and we continue to battle cruelty today. Whether it's saving a pet who has been accidentally poisoned, fighting to pass humane laws, rescuing animals from abuse or sharing resources with shelters across the country, we work toward the day in which no animal will live in pain or fear.
The Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest and most effective animal protection organization-backed by 10 million Americans, or one in every 30. Established in 1954, The HSUS seeks a humane and sustainable world for all animals-a world that will also benefit people. We are America's mainstream force against cruelty, exploitation and neglect, as well as the most trusted voice extolling the human-animal bond.
PETA: People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 1.8 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs.
