The Membrane
The "hidden" secret of Gore textile products
What is so special about our high-performance functional fabrics?
It is the membrane. And where is it? Not where you can see it. It is inside our clothing, "hidden" from view - our "invisible asset" if you like.
Developing and manufacturing GORE-TEX® and WINDSTOPPER® membranes and laminating them to materials suitable for the end-user are the core activities of Gore.
In 1969 Bob Gore discovered a special way of processing PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene). This opened up the possibility of applying the particular properties of this polymer to textile products. It involved expanding the PTFE mechanically to form a microporous membrane -without chemical reactions. Only low amounts of the polymer are needed to create this airy, lattice-like structure, thus making the process highly efficient.
Nowadays we develop and produce specific PTFE membranes for all kinds of applications.
