A Reading List for Change

Ranked #14,630 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #586,957 overall

This Lens is a Reading List on Change

Books that help you understand yourself and other people in times of change.

Are you involved in change in any way? Dealing with change, wanting to change - yourself, your organisation, you friends or colleagues, or just keen to learn more about change?

I have spent most of my adult life involved in change - working with organisations and individuals to bring about sometimes profound change.

This lens is work-in-progress: designed to present you with the very best of the books I've read, and which have helped me.

Once people start reading this lens, I hope you will contribute your favourites, andd I'll add them to the lens, with your recommendations.

Why do they print good books ...

... faster than we can read them?

This lens will have to be a work in progress. I shall add modules as I can to grow the reading list - and sometimes change some.

Don't get down-hearted if I've not yet covered the area of change you are interested in. Instead, drop me a line in my guestbook and tell me about it. That way, I can get anidea of priorities!

Making Change Happen

Theories, Models and Ideas

Here are some great books that set out models for how to make change happen. You may also want to scroll down to "What actually happened". This contains books with real change stories - some of which apply the theiories and models.

What Actually Happened?

Books that look at real life case studies

Books on theory are great: I love them. But for valuable tips and tricks, along with the inspiration to know you can get through it, nothing beats a few well-chosen case studies. Here are my favourites.

Dealing with Resistance to Change

This is the tough bit ...

... so you'll need some great resources!

Books on Positive Psychology

When shift happens, you'll want to focus on the good stuff, right?

These are, initially, some of my favourite books on Positive Psychology. I hope to add (and read) other recommendations you give, in my guestbook below.

It ain't the stress that does the damage

All my favourite books on stress take this approach.

Stress and Strain
In science, a stress is an external force, which causes a deformation - the strain. In people, Mike believes, it is not the external force (the stress) that does the damage: it is the way we respond to it.

Change can be stressful: before you can thrive in times of change, you must first survive the stress... or strain!

The Little Story Books

Metaphorical Change

I've no idea what to call this section. So here is what it is:
These are small books. They tell a story. The characters are cutesy. They have a valuable message at the heart. They are easily dismissed. They are worth reading. But they will not be enough for you to understand all you need to know.

Here's a true story. At least I believe it is true, but as I only heard it second hand ...

A manager was charged with leading change. People were resisting. So what did she do?

She bought them all a copy of "Who Moved my Cheese" and left copies on their desks.

Don't do that!
If you are in that position, go buy a copy of Rick Maurer's book and read it yourself. Twice. Then buy some more books and talk to some experienced people.

Transactional Analysis

A great way to understand why people do what they do

In times of change, established behaviours can either get amplified, or change around surprisingly. I have found a good basic understanding of Transactional Analysis (TA) has given me a lot of insight into what is going on.

Not only that, but TA wil help you diagnose underlying patterns and, perhaps most valuable, it will give you an indication of how to change your behaiviour to get the best from other people.

NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming - what horrid jargon!

... but what a great toolset.

No, you won't find a silver bullet in here, but neither is it all rubbish. Pick and choose from the very many tools available in NLP, to find those that do work for you.

NLP is all about personal change, and let's remember that organisational change is little more than the sum of lots of individual changes.

Fabulous Blogs on Change

I'm sure there are loads of great blogs out there ...

... and I intend to find them.

For the time being, however, I'll start with my favourite: Shift Happens!
Shift Happens! focuses on Prjects, Change and Risk and, I'll come clean on this one, it's my own!

Some of the best stuff is in our own backyard

Our Squidoo community offers a huge resource if you want to learn about change. I have only just started mining it for gems, so the list is still small.

Do tell me about your own favourites - or let me know about your own lens - and if I like your suggestion, I will list it here, with your name beside it, if you wish.

What great books have you read on change?

Why not suggest the best books you've read on the subject of change?

Or why not suggest a topic within this wide subject?
If I don't have any recommendations, I'm sure other readers will.
