Ten Great Books for Men and Guys

For guys who can't find something to read, you've been looking in the wrong place.

For girlfriends whose presents for their men go unread, you've been giving him the wrong books. Giving him what he should like, instead of what he will like.

Men love to read great books. But great books for men are hard to find.

Men like books that are exciting and uplifting and heroic.

We don't like books about sniveling real estate agents In New Jersey.

If you are looking for great books for men and guys, you are in the right place. And now I just wrote one of my own: Redwood to Deadwood, a 54-year old dude hitchhikes across America. Again.

So enjoy:

Great Books for Men and Guys. Not.

John Irving. Not on this list of great books for men and guys. Sorry John.My friend Fred loves to read. But he always falls asleep two or three pages into his book.

"So what are you reading?" I asked.

"100 Years of Solitude," quoth he.

No wonder. For years, book reviewers and academics have been trying to convince us that lousy books are great, great books are lousy, and so my friend Fred ends up falling asleep reading boring and non-sensical books.

I looked up a few great books for men lists, and at the top of the Esquire list is Invisible Man. And don't forget Oprah's list: http://www.oprah.com/omagazine/Books-That-Make-Great-Gifts-for-Men-Book-Reviews_1.

She includes the obligatory One Hundred Years of Solitude. And for those who do not read Spanish, not to worry. The book is only marginally more comprehensible in English.

Whew. Deep breath.

Repeat: There is no chance -- NO CHANCE -- that you will find a great book for men in the boxes where your wife stores the books from her college lit courses. No matter what she says.

And yes, that includes John Irving.

So for Fred's sake, read a great book for men.

Bonus Book Blog: Great On-line marketing books plus ....

While taking the University of San Francisco on-line marketing course, I've come across some books about making a bob or two on the internet that are clear and fun and simple and interesting.

Can't beat that combo. So here are a few.

First, our instructor has a cook book on picking your domain names ... it is not on amazon, so get it at jimkurkral.com

Next, the Unfair Advantage Book on Winning the Seach Engine Wars. By Planet Communications. This is the most complete and inspiring book on the subject I've seen so far. Very powerful.

Books to avoid at all costs: Go to Google. Enter, great books for men. Do not give any book on any of the lists such as Esquire, GQ, and others. Not if you want your boyfriend to stay awake while he reads them.

New Daniel Silva book coming out in July! Something about Rembrandt. I'll be there.

My friend just left a message on my Facebook, saying she liked my Bernard Cornwell recommendations but did not care for the Danielle Steele book I was reading and recommended.

Which is strange since I am not a Danielle Steele reader. I think it was a joke, but I am worried it was not.

This person is either mentally ill; or trying to make a joke.

I just paused for ten seconds ... I did not hear anyone laughing.

My Chinese Doctor says meat hurts memory. Jokesters and meat products do not mix.

Just saw where Patrick Robinson's new book is out soon. After reading his facebook page, i learned how his experience ghost writing Lone Survivor changed him and his books. Very interesting.

For guys who can't find something to read, you've been looking in the wrong place.

For girlfriends whose presents for their men go unread, you've been giving him the wrong books. Like Homer giving Marge a bowling ball with the initials HJS on it for their anniversary, you've been giving your boyfriend books he should like.

Instead of what he will like.

I really like Tom Clancy books and was wondering, are there any other books by authors that compare to them??

    Robert Ludlum- always a classic.
Vince Flynn is a huge up-and-comer now.
James Rollins Sigma Series is also popular.

Those three authors will give you more than enough books to satisfy the Tom Clancy urge.

Also, iUMBC.com has a ton of suggestions.

Finally, someone who agrees. Any book list you find has completely unreadable books just to make the author look smart. Am I really going to read Plato's The Republic or Darwin's Origin of Species.

    Nope.
