The Daylily

Daylilies (officially know as hemerocallis) are not only beautiful, they are easy to grow. They are given the name daylily as each bloom lasts only a day - however they produce many buds so they can bloom over a long period. The color combinations can be simply amazing and are truly one of natures coolest accomplishments. These are also some of the toughest plants around and seem to thrive just about anywhere but full shade. There are a number of professionals and hobbyists hybridizing daylilies striving for that new color combo. If you are a gardener then having a few daylilies is a must and more than likely they will become an obsession !

Daylily Basics

Perhaps the hardest step is the first - deciding which daylilies to plant. They come in an amzing number of color combinations as well as price levels. In fact a number of the new hybrids sell well in excess of $200. Don't panic as you will find lots of great hemerocallis (daylily) for under $10. The good news is they produce new shoots quickly and can often be divided in 1 or 2 years quickly increasing your stock. See Daylily Propagation module for more details on division.

Locations For Daylilies

Selecting a site for your daylily is relatively easy. These plants are tough ! They should get 6 hours of sunlight so a lot of shade is out. A rich soil will result in stronger, larger plants. When planting spread out the roots and compact the soil so there are no air pockets. Plant to the crown or fanbase. Fertilize in spring and once again but no later than mid August in zone 3-5 and mid September further south. We like to use a slow release fertilizer but the soluble type is fine, just be sure to avoid the leaves as much as possible. Any of your standard flower formulations will work well. Daylily Propagation

Increasing your stock of daylilies is easily accomplished by dividing. These tough hardy plants seem to handle the rigors of division like real troopers. Start by digging up a mature plant. You can either try to pull it apart or cut divisions from it. Make sure you have at least one fan attached ( top shoot). Just plant each of these divisions like a new plant. We prefer to divide in late spring but you can divide right into late summer. A more comprehensive guide can be found on our website www.hostasnlilies.com A great article on dividing daylilies by the U.S National Arboretum can be found here How To Divide Daylilies
