Great Dog Leashes

Tired of having your shoulder yanked out of its socket whenever your dog sees a squirrel, a rabbit, a cat, or anything else that just MUST be chased? There are leashes that make life much easier.

I'm a big fan of the European style dog leash because they function as 5 completely different kinds of leashes in one. I use them with my two dogs because they:

- Can be used as a hands-free across the shoulder leash
- Can be a 6' leash
- Can be a 4' leash
- Can be a 2-dog leash
- Can be a tie-out (great when you're camping!)

They come in tons of colors, are washable, and last forever. I've used the same two nylon leashes on my dogs for the past 3 years and they're still going strong.

My 2 dogs are active and strong (an 80-pound lab and a 50-pound border collie). While they're usually model dog citizens on their leashes, a squirrel or running cat makes them forget their manners for a moment. When they lunge, my body weight (which is about equal to theirs) keeps them under control and keeps me from me drug along behind them.

As much as I love the shoulder leashes, there is another style of leash that's pretty darn cool. It's a waist leash. This one is particularly nifty for anyone who likes to walk or run with their dogs. This one comes as a complete system! It folds up into a small little roll, but can hold your cell phone, wallet, poop bags, and lots of other little items. It's unique! A new model will be available in Spring 2010 that will let you walk two dogs -- the current version is only designed for one dog. It's cool!

If you're tired of de-tangling your dog's feet, or tripping over your dog's leash, you might like this one. It's made by Laughing My Tail Off and is really clever!

The leash is only 2' long, but expands to 6' so your dog can move closer or farther away. It's made from a polyurethane coil that automatically curls up when your dog moves closer and expands when he moves out to check that wonderful smelly spot. The handle is cushioned, so it's comfortable for you. It takes up very little room, so it's easy to put in your pocket when your dog is off leash. And they come in some seriously fun patterns.
