Monsters of Time and Space

Doctor Who is rightly famous for its monsters - over the show's long history The Doctor has fought and defeated more evil aliens than I care to remember. Everything from glowing blobs of slime to sophisticated robots to... pantomime horses painted green.

Whatever the quality of the special effects, it's the monsters that make Doctor Who so memorable. Some fade away after one appearance and are quickly forgotten, others have us hiding behind the sofa again and again. Even men in rubber suits can be scary if the story is good.

This page celebrates the greatest, scariest, most memorable Doctor Who monsters of all time. To start with I've selected my personal favourites, please add your own in the poll at the bottom of the page - and ask your friends to do the same.

The Daleks

Of all the creatures the Doctor has battled his greatest enemies are without doubt the Daleks. These all-exterminating baddies were created in the series by Kaled scientst Davros. In real life they were created by Terry Nation, whose estate still owns the rights.

The Daleks are neither living creature nor robot but a hybrid. An organic green blob is housed in an armed travel machine.

The Cybermen

The Cybermen are, like the Daleks, a blend of man and machine. Unlike the Daleks this blending is not voluntary. Unwilling humanoids are forcibly "upgraded" to become cybermen.

In the classic series, the cybermen originated on the planet Mondas. In the new series they were created in a parallel universe by mad scientist John Lumic.

The Ood

My personal favourites from the new series, the Ood are a strange race. These tentacled humanoids are perhaps not strictly speaking "monsters" since they are used as servants (virtually slaves) by humanity. However their low level telepathic abilities make them susceptible to control by evil outside forces.

The Sontarans

The Sontarans only appeared in a few stories in the classic era yet they remain one of the most memorable of the show's creatures. They are a warrior race of squat humanoids with large heads and no necks. They live only for their endless war with the Rutans.

The Sontarans are rumoured to be returning to Doctor Who for new series 4.

The Autons

The Autons had the honour of being the first Doctor Who monsters to be filmed in colour as well as the first to feature in the new series.

The Autons are not really alive, rather they are plastic shop window dummies that are animated by the Nestene consciousness. The Nestene can animate and control anything plastic, from dummies to dolls to (groan) wheelie bins.
