What Is Our Greatest Fear? And How Do We Overcome It?
Ranked #4,932 in Culture & Society, #104,897 overall
Has your greatest fear ever come true?
There is not much in life that truly scares me, but there are a few things that I fear. For as long as I can remember, I have always been afraid of heights. Riding in elevators with glass windows is still extremely difficult, and I rarely stand close to the edge of any balconies. The funny thing is I still love sitting in the window seat when I am flying, although the thought of plummeting out of the sky does cross my mind a few times during the flight.
With that being said, my greatest fear has nothing to do with heights. It is actually death...my death or the death of someone close to me. There are few things in life that give me the chills just from thinking about them, but the thought of dying is definitely one of them. I am not sure if it is the uncertainty about what happens after we are gone or if it is just the finality of it all, but something about dying just seems to put everything in perspective.

You never know until it happens...
...your reaction to your fear could surprise you.

Going back to the question at hand, I can definitely say that I have had already had to face my greatest fear twice and unless someone finds a way for us to live forever, I know I will have to face it again. My first real experience with death came with the passing of my stepmother back in 1999. For all intensive purposes, she was a very healthy person and none of us had reason to believe that she was in any danger. One morning I was asleep in my room when my father woke me up saying that she had passed out downstairs in the kitchen. By the time I got down there and felt how cold her hands were, I knew that there was nothing else we could do to save her.
The amazing thing about my stepmother's death is that it ended up strengthening my relationship with my father. We had always been close, but I had never been in a position where he needed to lean on me as much as I needed to lean on him. As much as I would love to have my stepmother back today, I thank her for helping my father and I to form an even tighter bond and for helping us to realize just how short life really can be.
It can strike again with no warning....
...your greatest fear can happen at any time

My second experience with death came a couple of years later when my grandmother lost her battle with breast cancer. Her whole ordeal taught me exactly how a person should live with dignity and die with grace. The whole situation was crazy because it was almost as if she knew that her time was coming to a close. She had all of her financial affairs wrapped up, and always seemed to just be relishing the moment each time we had a family function. I can clearly remember her sitting down surrounded by a bunch of Christmas presents and not even worrying about opening them. She was more concerned with witnessing all of our faces as we opened our own presents. To this day, I am not sure if she ever got around to opening her own.
I can remember being a senior in college, and she would always tell me that her goal was to live long enough to see me graduate. It always seemed like something silly that a grandmother would say to motivate her grandson in order to finish school on time. Remarkably, her cancer took her life not even a full year after I completed my studies. Graduating from college was the best give I ever gave her, and I am so happy that she was able to share that moment with me.
The bigger picture remains the same...
...any fear can be conquered

So yes, I have faced my greatest fear on more than one occasion and although it brought an immense amount of pain with it, it also taught me so much about how precious life is. It is unfortunate that it sometimes takes death for us to realize how lucky we are in life, but I am thankful to still have the opportunity to get it right.
We all have things that we fear, and some of us have had to confront those fears for one reason or another. The key is to embrace the challenge, and try to learn something from the experience. Often this can change the relationship from one of fear to one of understanding. If all else fails, realize that there are tons of other people who are afraid of the same things. It never hurts to ask for a shoulder to lean on if you are in need.

- Foremost I am petrified of spiders. If I see one I have to kill it, can't let it go because you never know where it's going and when it's going to creep up on you.
I have a fear of heights, and that used to make me petrified to fly or to go on roller-coasters etc. If I stand on a balcony and look down I get giddy, and even if I stand looking up I get giddy too. I overcame this gradually through the need to take lots of flights for work, and then while in Guatemala I had the opportunity to visit Tikal, one of the Mayan ruins, and I couldn't not climb to the top of the pyramids there. That was really scary, a very steep climb with nothing to hold on to, and it took half an hour to pluck up courage to climb down. I am a bit better now, but still not good on stools or step ladders. Nicely done, blessed.

- Thank you poddys!
My step-son is pretty scared of spiders too. They never bothered me too much, but I agree with you about feeling nervous if you lose track of them. Nothing worse than the feeling of a bug suddenly crawling on you.
I'm very scared of heights myself, and sometimes I force myself to confront it. I still get a really strange feeling in my stomach if I'm put in that situation though. It's almost as if I start to envision what will happen if I fall. Not a good feeling at all!

- Not really sure what my greatest fear is - I suppose I just tend to take things in stride... though I'm not terribly fond of public speaking, even in front of people I know.

- Public speaking is a tough one. We had to take a public speaking course in high school, so it basically forced us to confront our fear of it. I still get a little nervous when speaking in front of large crowds.

- Thanks for stopping by!
I think just as important as the fear is the fact that most of them can be overcome. It's sad to see people that are basically paralyzed when confronted by certain situations.
