Jimmy V. says:
There is no question. Not only was Hendrix the greatest, but the greatest by a LONG shot. If you were somehow able to ask all the great guitarists out there today who THEY think is the greatest ever, every single one of them would say Hendrix. That should be proof enough for anyone.

Hendrix for president says:
and in all this stuff i wrote i forgot to mention the most impressive part, regardless of being the best or not, he was great and i think we can all agree on that, and the fact he got where he got by himself without anyone teach him, only by listening and through that being able to do all that which he did makes his skill just look and sound so surreal....

Hendrix for president says:
It's just wrong to say that Stevie Ray Vaughn whooped Hendrix's ass because first, hendrix was vaughn's greatest idol, on countless interviews he praised hendrix and said people should stop comparing him to hendrix because there was only was only one hendrix and no one is better than him!! he covered so many hendrix songs. and if you say in terms of skills and playing "clean" (but with distortion duh) hendrix really wasn't the best, I mean, satriani, vai, slash, eddie van halen, the list is too long, but the thing is, stariani says when he heard hendrix for the first time he was mesmerized and that his life changed forever and he decided to play guitar on the day hendrix died as a tribute in honour to hendrix. so yeah.... and steve vai says that his muddy, dirty, chaotic, animalistic sound was something he was able to take and turn into an amazing and most innovative rock sound he ever heard! and probably any of your favourite rock and metal guitar players as well as other rock and metal musicians (drummers, singers) will list hendrix as one of the greatest influences, idols, rockers and guitar players if not the greatest solely due to the fact that he was so innovative, so unique in style and adept at anything, so obviously insanely talented, a genius, and the fact he created so many new things and changed the way we look and talk about rock n roll to this very day.... rob halford, the metal god, said on an interview that hendrix is the best guitar player ever, he didn't even hesistate or stop to think or ponder for so much as a fraction of a second when he was asked that!! zakk wylde named him as one of the greatest guitar gods ever (or maybe even THE guitar god - can't remember how he phrased it) and named his second son after hendrix. jeff beck, amazing legendary british guitar player and probably slash's greatest idol said that the first time he saw hendrix play he thought he should quit music and get a job at the post-office. and clapton when at the time was considered to be god, got upstaged by hendrix and couldn't believe how good hendrix was especially when taking into consideration he played clapton's favourite song which clapton used to say was way to hard to play!! and it's damn straight a shame that he only been around a musician for 4 years so we didnt get to see him develop which is a shame because he was trying to but his manager wasn't letting him.... besides not only he completely set a new standard for rock and guitar playing as well as completely changing people's perception of using the whammie bar and distortion and octaver pedals and whawha pedals, he's to blame for there being so many guitar players out there nowadays! and if you think about it, the fact he was around for so short and yet did so much and caused such an impact and afforded us with so much to talk about only comes to show how amazing he was. and it comes to show that if he had the time he would have become heavenly.... plus, hendrix couldn't even write music (as in, on paper - the notes) --> he knew squot about theory, imagine he had, there would be no point in anybody ever attempting at playing guitar again cuz he would just know everything and he would do the craziest things that all the things we have a hard time doing now but enjoy doing as guitar players, he would make it look like childs play. and i might repeat myself now, but hendrix had such freedom when playing and made it look so natural that it is just beautiful to watch him play, even when he crapps things up and makes mistakes and plays a note that's not in the scale and sounds like crap!!!!he could play one note and you know it's hendrix playing from miles away!! and that's why I THINK and BELIEVE that he was the best, and I agree with the guy that said that it's all a matter of opinion but because he's the originator of all this, he sould be getting like loads and loads more of respect and recognition as he's been getting much less in the past few years, many people are forgetting him and taking him for granted but at the very least I WORSHIP him!

I picked up a guitar 2 years ago to learn to play "More than Words" by Extreme. Since playing I have been drawn inexplicably to Jimi Hendrix and his style. As a NOVICE my opinion might not count based on experience, but I have not heard, or connected with another guitarist that has that same "SOUND". He is simply incredible!!

Whoa..Vaughan...c'mon. Jimi played guitar with more energy and style than anybody. Maybe he's not the best but he is definitely the most unique one. The others are far more conservative and templated. I envy the people who saw him playing....envy, envy, envy.....

what the heck!? im for both sides here. jimi hendrix is the person who influenced me start guitar anyway. his music is amazing, his guitar playing phenomenal.the guy we're talking about here is one of the legendary rockstars of all history and we have to fight about this? and im not saying he is the best because there is no such thing as the best guitar player in the world because there are so many people who are legendary in guitar because slash is also good and people ssy he is not the best. it is all in personal opinion and there will be arguments on who played the best or who had the best solos, but it all comes down to personal opinion

God says:
SRV is in no way shape or form better than Jimi. all he does is do what Jimi did, minus the creativity/originality. he simply doesn't devolop on the techniques.
like people get too caught up in how fast this, how fast that, and don't realize its all about TONES AND CREATIVITY. simply SOUND. Jimi SOUNDS the best.
and if thats not good enough, lets see his skill leve:
only guitarist to play rhythm/lead at the same time, while fretting bass notes, WHILE singing.
only guitarist to make feedback sound good and melodic
invented funk
chordal solos
longest improvs
you are simply wrong, SRV can't touch Jimi and he said it

To ask this question is to incite debate among the informed and uninformed alike. Most people will argue for their favorite, whomever that may be. However, if you were to ask contemporary guitarists like Satriani, Vai, Gilbert, Petrucci, Morse and the like, they have all said Jimi is the best. Most influential, innovative, creative ever to plug in. Period.

I seen Jimi in Haight Ashbury before anyone knew who he was. Cant remember what year that was? I do remember it was a very windy day, and he was having trouble keeping his guitar in tune. In my opinion Jimi was a bues man, blues were his "roots". Very interesting lens! Really enjoyed it, thanks for sharing all this!

Michael Kocis says:
The one thing that makes Hendrix stand out as "The Greatest Guitar Player Of All Time" is not only what he did but WHEN he did it.
Having lived at the time when Jimi emerged on to the music scene I can tell you, before Mr. Hendrix, everyone sounded the same.
It was as if he invented a whole new instrument. Eric Claptons first words after hearing Jimi for the first time was, "Well, I'll never play guitar again." luckily he didn't keep that promise but you get the picture.
Another amazing thing was Jimi's insecurity as a guitarist. When he wasn't playing, he wasn't sure if people would like his style and when he was playing...well, he was somewhere other than here.

Gimme a Break! No Way!
Daniel says:
Nah...Jeff Beck would kick Hendrix's ass any day....If he say that he would rather quit when he saw Jimi Hendrix playing for the first time, it is because Jeff Beck says that all the time, he is such a humble person, I've seen him saying this with a lot of musicians he plays with, not only guitar players. I don't really hear any influence from Jimi on Beck but Beck's influence on Jimi is easy to spot, same huge wide bends at the same spots, something Beck did way before Jimi become famous. Jimi was good, really, but, the best ever? That's a little far stretched. Top 10 for sure, but not the best. Beck set the rules for a lot of players, I won't finish here If I start enlisting them, after doing that he just went in another direction and really, there isn't other guitar player that parallels his guitar playing nowadays. The expressiveness Beck achieves when he plays guitar, you won't find anyone coming close to it. If you ask the big guys (clapton, page, slash, joe perry, and so on) who they think it is the best guitar player out there, nine out of ten quote the same guy: Jeff Beck.

He's the best rock guitarist ever. The greatest guitarist ever was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Stevie was more versatile and cleaner than Hendrix. Hendrix had a muddy style. Vaughan had a flawless style.

He was definitely the flashiest and the most fun. He was great. But his career was cut short, so we didn't get to see him evolve artistically much past blues and psychedelia, and there are so many more dimensions to the guitar.

- I think ole Jimi was a cool dude. I liked how he could make his guitar speak, & sing! I veraciously wish he could have lived longer, to possibly have met my son. - My son's in Nashville now, justa tappin' his little heart out - 'tryin' to hit the big time - in the U.S.A.'

- Almost got to see him at the Fillmore East New Years Eve ushering in 1970 as a Band of Gypsies with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox which was, as you probably know, recorded live originally as "A Band of Gypsies" (LP). Wish I had been there (sigh......)
