Tricks and Treats

If you're the competitive type you might wonder how you can have the greatest Halloween party ever and beat out all your friends and neighbors. You might want to dazzle your guests with special effects, or scare the wits out of them with creepy creatures. So ditch those lame skeleton decals and read this lens. This is the one stop shop for all you girls and ghouls to get your Halloween how to's. Fall is a time to be to fun and different and with just a little help you will leave them screaming for more.

Here's to a haunted Halloween that will help all your dreams, I mean nightmares come true.

Halloween Invitations

Martha Stewart Mad Scientist Skeleton Invitations. I know Martha Stewart is a mad diva, but these invitations are mega cool looking, but the truth is there are a million ways to invite people to parties.

You can print invites on old looking parchment paper. Aged paper burned to look like an old pirate's map, you could invite people by a well crafted e-mail or even by word of mouth. Whatever invites you choose, make sure they fit you and the party you are putting on.

Haunted House and Yard

Setting the Mood starts before they even get out of their cars. Set up cobwebs, gravestones and a coffin fogger. Light your gravestones from behind. There are gravestones you can stick directly into the ground or you can use the plain kind and use thin wood or metal rods to stick half way into the gravestone and then into the ground. Torches can line the outside of your graveyard for the best mood lighting. Don't forget your pumpkins and Jack-o-lanterns, these are a classic that screams Halloween.

A coffin fogger will help fill your yard with fog and smoke and give your lawn an eerie tone. You can also add more smoke machines and a strobe light machine to complete your very creepy yard.

A great way to get your guests in the mood to party is to have them go through a haunted house before they step into your actual Halloween bash. This could be a haunted house that takes up half your house or it could be in just a of couple rooms, it just has to be cool enough to keep your friends talking. You might want to enlist a couple of friends or a family member to grab your guest right before they reach your party to really get their blood pumping.

Remember to have another entrance for people who are in ill heath or are going to have a baby. A women going into labor will get you talked about in all the wrong ways.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of putting together a maned haunted house, you can find a good hiding place in your front room and frighting your friends as they walk in.

You should be the first thing they see when they come in so you have to throw yourself into your costume and create something that is truly unique.

To keep things easy most of the products featured in this lens will be under the module that they are featured in.

Make-up or Mask

Monster make-up and masks. Mask though awesomely scary and creepy can be hard to wear all night long. Make-up is slightly better and if you're good at it you can achieve a fantastic look with it, but you may have to freshen up your monster make-up throughout the night, depending on what you use. Though monster make-up tends to stay on better than women's facial make-up, however it is greased based and not great for your skin.

If you get an itchy face like myself, go with the mask. Mask are removable and if you scratch your made-up face you might destroy the look.

Now for Decor

Pair down your regular clutter, family photos and anything else that doesn't fit the theme of the party.

Cover all your way to modern pieces of furniture with white sheets, to give your house a feeling that no one has lived there for years. Places silver candlestick holders with long wax candles, even when unlit they give a ghostly feel.

Old portraits even if they are cheap prints can look creepy in simulated candlelight. Some paintings you might want to hang crookedly, this will give the feeling that spirits aren't happy.

Creepy sounds and scary music can carry that feeling throughout your event.

You can glue a spider to the back of a toilet paper roll, you will only scare one person this way, just make sure you don't forget and scare yourself instead.

Yummy Not Frightful

You don't have to make crazy cool treats like this.

Now I will tell you about what I do. I make homemade Betty Crocker sugar cookies and using Halloween cookie cutters I cut out little spooky shapes and ice them in fancy colors like orange, black and purple. I ice cupcakes and put new plastic spiders on top. The most important thing at least for any youngsters is that I take a huge plastic cauldron and fill it with candy. My guest always fight over that bowl like it's the holy grail and if anyone leaves hungry it's their fault.

You can take everyday treats and make them into something new. You can buy a chocolate cake and cover it in gummy warms and other candied body parts. You can take Chex Mix and mix in some candy corn. You could decide you want all your food orange and eat yummy orange cupcakes and cheese puffs all night, remember it is all up to you.

Punch and Blood

To give your actual party a royal feel, buy lots of wine glasses. This doesn't have to break the bank. The Dollar Tree sells wine glasses that are made in America and everything there is never over a dollar.

Take a large plastic punch bowl and then place a smaller punch bowl inside of it. Fill the smaller with soda or punch and put dry ice in the larger bowl around it using tongs (do not touch it your bare hands). You don't want to put it directly in the punch, which I've done when I was young and stupid. All you have to do to activate the dry ice is pure warm water over it. This will give your kitchen or living room the feeling of a mad scientist 's layer. You can add as much dry ice as you like, adding more as the night goes on.

As for the wine glasses you can buy sparkling red wine and make blood labels for them. You can download the labels here http://www.booityourself.com/BooItYourself2/

There is a youtube clip to show you everything you can make.

You can fill new "Latex Free" (remember we don't want people being rushed to the hospital at your party) rubber gloves with red fruit punch or water with red food coloring. Tie them off and place them in the freezer, after they are frozen take them out of the glove shell and place them inside your bunch bowl.

Th last drink idea is warm apple cider. Gently warm apple cider in a large pot. Cook it to a boil, have cinnimine sticks and nutmeg on hand for those who like it. You can also cook it in a crock pot for six to eight hours, which will make your entire house smell like cooked apples.

Science and Halloween

You may not know this, but all the ghost and ghouls in the world can be beat by a tad bit of science. You can take tonic water and make ice cubes out of them and place them in water or clear soda and under a black light the ice cubes will glow.

I can't tell you how to do everything somethings need to be shown, seeing is believing. These youtube experiments by my favorite youtube scientist guy will drive you and your guest wild. These tricks of the trade will wow adults and children alike. Some of them are simple and some of them are more intense.
