Chewbacca was an immense, fur covered beast, of great loyalty and strength. He was an expert with a variety of mechanical skills, which he applied often to the Millenium Falcon. This was the ship he co-piloted, along with Han Solo. Chewbacca had a life debt with Han, because Solo saved his life. Chewbacca fufilled his life debt by sacrificing himself to save Han Solo's younger son and a cargo hold full of people. He had a wife, and a child. He was an important figure in the Rebel Alliance aswell, and he helped with the destruction of the Death Star.
