Great Marketing Ideas

In a world that is literally saturated in marketing, companies are now having to resort to alternatives in order to keep the attention of the consumer. This Lens is set up to offer suggestions, as well as showcase some strange, and often funny, marketing campaigns.

Reverse Marketing?

What exactly are they trying to do here?

I found this ad on the sidebar at Penny Arcade while I was reading the comic the other day. It struck me as very odd, yet in-line with their personalities.

The guys just released their first feature video game, and were placing ads on their site to promote the game, sounds pretty standard so far. But instead of using something positive, they post the rantings of a barely-literate critic.

Why?

Because this gets people talking. People today don't care about standard advertising, it's too common to care about. But this is not only a little humorous, but completely opposite from the norm. This is the definition of viral marketing, an ad that's real legs are from the secondary market, us. We spread this around, sending it to our friends, blog about it, etc. An excellent example of what this lens is all about.

How and Why Viral Marketing Works

Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet. June 23, 2005, 2005 Viral marketing is a marketing phenomenon that facilitates and encourages people to pass along a marketing message voluntarily.Viral Marketing - definition, information, sites, articles Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or even text messages. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.

It is claimed that a customer tells an average of three people about a product or service he/she likes, and eleven people about a product or service which he/she did not like.

Viral marketing is based on this natural human behavior.

The goal of marketers interested in creating successful viral marketing programs is to identify individuals with high Social Networking Potential (SNP) and create Viral Messages that appeal to this segment of the population and have a high probability of being passed along.

The term "viral marketing" is also sometimes used pejoratively to refer to stealth marketing campaigns May 8, 2007?the use of varied kinds of astroturfing both online and offline December 14, 2005 to create the impression of spontaneous word of mouth enthusiasm.

Buzz Marketing and SEO

This topic was recently covered by the guys over at SEO Noobs

"Buzz marketing has become a household term in this day and age. How long has it been since you haven't noticed that eye-catching cause-oriented banner ad in some blog? In fact, Internet marketers have tapped different social networks, depending on their audience demographics to activate buzz marketing.
