Wordpress Themes
A theme determines how the Header and Footer looks, where navigation elements appear, how wide the sidebars are, what bullet points look like and so much more.
There are some great wordpress themes around - many are free and some are paid. A paid wordpress theme is generally called a premium theme.
Enjoy my showcase of my favorite free and paid wordpress themes.
Free Wordpress Themes
BUT - exercise caution...some themes might look good but are not particularly compatible with later versions of Wordpress... some may not have dynamic sidebars, which means you may need to 'code' the sidebars as opposed using the Widgets function within the blog admin function etc...
To find Free wordpress themes - all you need to do is use your favorite search engine....
I thought I would share some of my fave places to look for new themes:
Free WP Themes
Top WP Themes
Fresh Eezy
WP Theme 4 Free
I also offer free Wordpress themes from Ask Charly Leetham
You can find a free theme to suit the personality of your blog:

This is the theme I chose for my personal blog. I loved the color and the iris header. My personal blog is very simple and I didn't want a lot of widgets or sidebar elements.

A bright and happy theme for a 12 year olds blog. My daughter chose this theme for her own blog - she loved the simplicity and the rainbow.
A niche theme. If you are into Gaming, then this theme is one for you. 3 columns allows the Gamer blogger to organize some monetization whilst sharing their passion with their readers.
Change the theme of your blog for the time of year - celebrate Valentines Day with this one..
Or christmas with this one.
This wordpress theme is for a more 'professional' look and is optimized for social networking. Designed so that the modification of the sidebars is done through the admin interface - without modifying widgets.
There really is a free theme for just about everyone.
The best thing about a Wordpress Theme is that you can change it, as often as you like.
Wordpress Themes: What To Consider
- What your overall goal for the blog is - to provide content and develop credibility or to drive sales? Perhaps something in between?
- Think about how you want your visitors to flow through the site
- What sort of 'character' or 'persona' do you wish to portray to your visitors
- What have you seen that you really like?
- What have you seen that you really didn't like?
It's important to point out that as you and your business matures online, so to will your look and feel. Don't worry if one day you look at your site that you loved so much and think "Oh! That's really not me!". That's a natural part of the evolution of business.
By choosing, or developing, the right theme you are giving yourself, and your business, an opportunity to 'be itself'.
Buy, Customize Or Just Use What You Can Get?
Buying A Wordpress Theme
There are some fantastic Wordpress themes that you can buy and if you find one that you believe you can install and start blogging with - then you should purchase it and start. However, if you look at a Wordpress theme and think that you will change elements of it once it is installed, you may be better off talking to your developer and having them design the exact theme you want.
You must also check your licensing conditions before changing a theme - be sure you know what the conditions are before you buy it.
I have been asked by several clients to take a theme they have purchased and 'make it their own'. By the time I've finished changing the theme to their requirements, it would have be an easy to start from scratch.
The benefit of a premium, or paid theme is that you will generally receive a couple of variations, some extra management functionality and top notch coding. You also receive support - so if something about the theme doesn't work or stops working - you can get it working again.
A Fave Wordpress Customization
Can You Roar...
I used a theme that I had a licence to use and modify, changed the color scheme, created a header graphic and implemented. The result:
This theme uses a different front page to the blog pages. The front page is used to showcase the content on the rest of the blog. By setting up the categories of the blog in a certain way, the front page displays the most recent information.
A great result - all done by taking an existing theme and modifying it.
