A guide to the best beach holidays in Greece by Simpson Travel.

The Beaches of Greece

For those who wish to enjoy a beach holiday in Greece, Simpson's selection of Greek Islands will offer something for everyone, no matter what your preference;

Crete is bathed in sunshine for 300 days of the year and offers the dedicated sun worshipper hidden coves and beautiful sandy beaches, none more famous than the lagoon of Elafonissi. Paxos on the other hand offers shimmering pebble coves, perfect for snorkeling in a sea of unbelievable turquoise, whilst Zakynthos has a fine natural heritage with protected beaches where the Loggerhead Turtles, caretta caretta, nest. These beaches are free from water sports and perfect for small children.

Whatever your needs we are confident we can help you find the perfect beach holiday in Greece.

Holidays in Crete

Recommended Crete Holidays for Enjoying the Best Beaches of Crete

Best Beaches in Eastern Crete

Vai
Situated 20 kilometres east of Sitia, Vai has a white sandy beach famed for it's wild palm forest, the only one in Europe. The palms are endemic to Crete. Visit early morning or late evening, if possible as it can become very busy. There is a public car park. Having seen the palms you may consider continuing for a couple of kilometers to Itanos which not only has the remains of a Roman settlement but also some pretty little beaches. There are no facilities here so remember to pack a picnic.

Istron Bay Hotel, near Agios Nikolaos is perched above the spectacular bay from which it takes its name. Rooms are arranged on well spaced terraces, which descend to the wide cove below and make the most of the sea views and the bright and beautifully maintained gardens.

Beaches on the South Coast of Crete

Matala
About 70 kilometres south west of Heraklion, Matala beach comprises of series of sandy coves separated by rocky headlands. Matala first attracted hippies in the 1960's who lived in the numerous caves, original Roman tombs, surrounding the beach. More orthodox now it is still low key and doesn't get too crowded. If you want something more private you can climb over the rocks and in about 20 minutes an excellent stretch of sand known as 'Red' beach. There is a public car park and plenty of places to eat. However, the best of the beaches is Kommos, which you reach by turning right after passing the village of Pitsidia on the way to Matala. This is an excellent beach and whilst here you can take a look at the Minoan harbour which is currently under excavation.

The Belvedere Villas are situated just 20 minutes south of Rethymnon in an idyllic and peaceful setting on a hilltop rising between two gorges. There are westerly views of the White Mountains, often tipped with snow even in May, the dramatic Ida Massif to the east, and of rolling countryside towards Rethymnon.

More details on The Belvedere Villas...

Agia Galini
Traveling west of Matala for about 12 kilometres you will reach Agia Galini. A crescent shaped pebbly bay where a reed-lined river meets the sea; this is a classic fishing village turned beach resort and probably the prettiest on the south coast. The beach however has more rocks than sand though there are boat trips to other beaches from here worth visiting.

Myrtos
About 15 kilometres west of Ierapetra, Myrtos is a charming fishing village with a south-facing sandy beach. Probably the least crowded of eastern Crete even in August. The short promenade behind the beach is lined with tavernas plus there is the added attraction of a small local museum displaying finds from the Minoan settlements at Nea Myrtos and Pirgos. The museum is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 2.00pm and there is a small charge.

Best Beaches in Western Crete

Falasarna
Approximately 15 kilometres from Kastelli (just follow the road from Kastelli harbour to Platanos and you will see the road to Falasarna indicated to the right) this beach is one of the finest on the West coast. Although quite well known now, it still doesn't get too crowded, even in high season and is relatively unspoilt by the tourist industry, however we don't recommend this beach if there is a strong westerly wind. A 1999 European Union water survey found it to have the second cleanest water in Greece. Beach umbrellas and sun beds are available on the beach. There are a couple of tavernas and a beach Cantina. Whilst here you may wish to visit the site of Ancient Falasarna, the Hellenistic port which once thrived here - just 1 kilometre beyond the car park.

Villa Sophia is one of a group of just four houses. This comfortable villa is built in the traditional Cretan style and sits just above the hamlet of Pano Stalos, with its village shop and two popular tavernas, where local, freshly prepared Cretan dishes offer the perfect end to a day of discovery. Villa Sophia is 45 minutes drive from Falasarna Beach.

Holidays in Cephalonia

Recommended Cephalonia Holidays for Enjoying the Best Beaches of Cephalonia

Myrtos Beach
Myrtos is the most famous beach on Cephalonia and has been voted one of Europe's most beautiful. The beach is a huge sweep of white limestone pebbles set a kilometre down from the road, it is breathtaking. Waves come crashing onto the shore turning the waters edge a milky turquoise. Although it is beautiful from the waters edge, its best viewing point is from the road above to the north. Myrtos is a well-maintained, clean beach during the summer months. A kilometre below the main road, the now tarmaced descent is steep with many switchbacks. There is not much shade once you reach the beach, with the sun reflecting off the white limestone around this enclosed bay. The cafes are just caravans and do not afford much shade. For supplies, there is a shop at the top of the road that turns down to the beach.

The Aloni Cottages in Tzamarelata, near Fiskardo, have been perfectly designed to sit within this natural landscape, as has the elegant curved swimming pool. The only sounds here are the crickets, the occasional hawk and the afternoon breezes catching the leaves of the olive trees.

More details on Aloni Cottages...

Assos Beach
Assos beach is comprised of large irregular pebbles, mostly grey in colour and is kept clean. Assos beach is fine for a swim or an hour's relaxation. The beach itself is not special but the setting of Assos is very beautiful and looking out across the aquamarine bay to the Venetian fortress, backed by the village square and the crumbling ruins of Assos, you could not ask for a prettier spot. Most visitors to Assos travel a couple of kilometres down the coast of Cephalonia to one of Europe's most dramatic beaches, Myrtos. There is no shade on the beach itself, but three steps away and you are under the cool of the Platanos (or Plane tree) shaded village square of Assos. Since Assos beach is literally a couple of steps down from the main square of the village, all of the facilities of Assos are at hand. That includes shops, tavernas, cafes and bars.

Holidays in Corfu

Arillas
Arillas is on the other side of the headland from Agios Stefanos (West). It is a favourite place for couples and families looking for a quiet beach holiday. The beach itself is a narrow, 200 m strip of sand, separated from pebbly Afionas Beach by a small stream. It is framed by picturesque headlands. There are limited water sports on offer and tavernas and a couple of beachside bars.

Panorama and Paradiso Villas are a 10 minute walk to Arillas Beach.. Beamed ceilings, immaculate bathrooms and open-plan kitchens and comfortable furniture increase the sense of relaxation and style. Privacy has been carefully preserved; a tall traditional stone wall, covered in flowering climbers, divides one garden from the other.

George, the Canadian-Greek owner has created a delightful garden around his villas. Only bamboo thickets and a small cornfield lie between this quiet location and the sea.

More details on Panorama and Paradiso Villas...

Nissaki
Nissaki is on the north-east coast facing Albania and clinging precariously to a steep mountainside, strung along a stretch of road skirting the mountain with the beach below. The beach is small but in a lovely situation and good for snorkelling. It is shingle and sand and there are three tavernas. There are several small coves.

The Saints cottages are suitable for both families and couples looking for accommodation of comfort and character in well-maintained surroundings, along one of the loveliest stretches of the Corfu coast.

Each cottage is individually designed to take maximum advantage of its location and all have spacious, airy accommodation with fabulous sea views.

More details on The Saints...

Agios Georgios (North)
Located at the northern end of the west coast, between two headlands in a horse-shoe shaped bay, this is a secluded resort approached by a steep, narrow road. Small and untouched by the crowds it is exclusively a tourist development with no native village life and very quiet in the low season. The beach of golden sand is one of the best on the island, with a range of water sports in the high season. Fresh breezes make it especially good for windsurfing. There are some local tavernas specialising in fish.

Agios Georgios (South)
The two beaches at Agios Georgios are on the south-west coast. They are surrounded by olive groves, and reached by a narrow country lane off the main road. This is a great place for those looking for sunshine and uncrowded beaches. They are good for children as the swimming is safe and there is little road traffic. Both beaches are wide and sandy with sun beds and parasols. One of them has sand dunes but there is very little shade as well as a few local tavernas.

Holidays in Ithaca

Recommended Ithaca Holidays for Enjoying the Beaches of Ithaca

Loutsa
The beach is sandy, it is found in a resideritial area . There are water sports. The length of the beach is about 1500meters and the width is 50 metres, there are accesses along the beach with stairs made of wood and cement as well as ramps for people with special needs.

The Yellow House is set above the town of Vathy amongst other similar, attractive properties and has fine views of the harbour over trees and terracotta tiled roofs. It is a well established, welcoming house, with wood floors throughout. To the front a long terrace allows guests to watch Vathy life, while a sheltered garden with its own swimming pool is situated at the rear.

More details on The Yellow House...

Marmakes

The stone beach at Marmakes is around 4kilometres over the headland from Aphales and can be reached by a dirt track; but only a brave driver attempts this track. Sheer drops to the sea along narrow unfenced and crumbling dirt tracks are for the suicidal only. You really need a boat or strong legs for a goat track from Frikes to get here, two good reasons why it is usually deserted. That said, there are moves afoot to improve the road, which may open it up to more visitors. The stone beach is very attractive with an offshore islet sporting a tiny chapel to add to the romantic setting. Trees line the shore and there are walks through the groves of olive and fruit behind.

The views from The Bay House encapsulate all that is best about this beautiful island: hillsides covered in wild thyme, olive and cypress trees, a natural harbour with translucent blue sea below, and the roof tops of Vathy.

More details on The Bay House...

Agios Ioannis
The resort of Agios Yiannis looks spectacular from the cliffs above with nearby Nikolaos completing the scene with an old windmill for romantic effect. Getting down to it is a problem, particularly if you make the mistake of trying to make the descent before reaching the village of Lefki. There is dirt track before then but it is a precipitous drop and you will never get back up in a car. Even the road from Lefki is difficult with hairpin turns on a steep track that ends about 100m from the beach. A steeper path then leads down past the windmill. The beach is a long narrow strip of pebble and stone with fine views across the straits. Remember to pack a picnic and your beach umbrella, as there is no shade and no facilities.

Holidays in Zakynthos

Recommended Zakynthos Holidays for Enjoying the Beaches of Zakynthos

Gerakas
Gerakas is often billed as the best beach on the island and any visitor can immediately appreciate why, The Times Newspaper has also voted the beach as one of the top beaches in Europe. It is a long bay of golden sand, with shallow safe waters and low cliffs giving the beach shelter and a sense of seclusion. This beach is not just a favourite with human visitors, as it is also where the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles lay their eggs and because of this the beach is part of the National Marine Park and visitors are asked to be careful so as not to disturb any of the turtles eggs. Watersports are not available at this beach for the protection of the turtles. Two tavernas at this beach amply cater for all your refreshments needs. The beach is out of bounds between dusk and dawn, again for the protection of the turtles.

The reputation of Periyali Villas has spread by word of mouth and enthusiastic reviews in the national press because it has always offered something so very special for families. The eleven attractive villas provide a chance for families to have all their individual needs met, but with no compromise on comfort, character or privacy in accommodation.

More details on Periyali Villas...

Agios Nikolaos
The beach of Agios Nikolaos owes its name to the little chapel that stands on the far left end. This beach is smaller than Banana Beach but at least as beautiful, and has a restaurant and a bar. However, it can be rather popular with a younger crowd. The right side of the bay is quieter. Removed from the beach action, to the left on the cape is the pretty sight of Agios Nikolaos church. Some sea sports facilities are available on Agios Nikolaos Beach as well as scuba diving courses.

Holidays in Paxos

Recommended Paxos Holidays for Enjoying the Beaches of Paxos

Moggonissi
At the southeastern tip of the island, on the road from Gaios Moggonissi is an island, which can be reached from the Paxos shore across a 3m causeway. The protected beach offers a full range of facilities for families and a taverna, which offers Greek dancing in the evening. We have mixed reviews on the dancing, however. On the south coast of the islet are the sea caves of Moggonissi. Paxos and neighbouring Antipaxos, like the other Ionian islands have passed through a number of conquering hands over the centuries. They featured in major sea battles between Greek alliances in ancient times, they were held variously by Byzantines and Ottoman Turks. At the western extremity of what is now the Modern Greek state, the Ionians fell prey to Franks, Venetians, Turks and - most of all - pirates of every flag.

The pretty, newly built Alexandros House is perched high on a hilltop above Bogdanatika and Gaios with magnificent views across towards the west coast of Greece and the sea towards Italy. In fact, on a clear day you are able to make out the islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca.

More details on Alexandros House...

Haramis
Lovely sandy beach with crystal clear waters with plenty of bars, tavernas and watersports nearby. In Lakka (Babakas), just before the beach, there used to be a fortress known as Dalietos Castle. Don't look for it, though - its stones were taken long ago to build houses in the village and not a trace of it is visible today.

Balos - On Lakka Bay
This fine-pebble beach offers all the facilities listed above for Haramis, the bay having been well developed for visitors. You'll notice sailing boats at anchor in the harbour and can take a tour by peddle boat or small motorboat if you tire of sunning and swimming.

Holidays on Epiros Coast

Recommended Epiros Coast Holidays for Enjoying the Beaches of the Epiros Coast

The prefecture of Preveza wishes to be one of the regions with the most beautiful and clean coasts of Greece.

The beaches of are extended in length of 60 kilometers. Bights, peninsulas, gulfs, sandy beaches and rocks alter harmonious.

Pine forests that reach up to in the hospitable beaches create the ideal bipolar sun - shade. Untouched from the human intervention they are ready to offer hospitality to summer visitors inspiring the respect in the maintenance of this great natural environment.

Loutsa
The beach is sandy, it is found in a resideritial area . There are water sports. The length of the beach is about 1500meters and the width is 50 metres, there are accesses along the beach with stairs made of wood and cement as well as ramps for people with special needs.

The new small Villa Aetos in traditional style stands on its own on the western coast of Ithaca above the little port of Piso Aetos, just over six kilometres from Vathy town. The setting is one of a dramatically rugged hillside from where there are occasional sightings of eagles from which the port takes it name - Aetos.

More details on Villa Aetos...

Lichnos Beach
The beautiful sand beach of Lichnos, 3.5 kilometres (2.2 miles) south of Parga, is a favourite beach in the area. This long beach is mostly out of coarse-grained sand that shifts from shiny white to golden yellow. This perfect sand is soft, formable, and just coarse enough to lie still - it will not fly into your eyes!

Valtos beach
To the right of the Venetian fortress, Valtos beach spreads out as a necklace made of white coral. Valtos is in the eyes of many the best beach of Parga - it has beautiful surroundings, it is very long, there is room for everyone and it is within a walking distance.

Alonaki Beach
Great for snorkelling. Large rocks in the bay with a small cave around the North side.
