Who Were the Twelve Olympian Gods?
Didn't anyone think to pass around an attendance sheet?
To make matters worse, Greek artists often skip name tags...
One Fine Day on Mt. Olympus

Greek Gods on the Parthenon Frieze, Elgin Marbles collection, now in the British Museum.
Photo of Hera and Zeus by Yair Haklai; Athena and Hephaistos by Marie-Lan Nguyen. The twelve Olympian gods usually include: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Hephaistos, Athena, Apollo, Artemis.
Dionysos and/or Hestia are often among the twelve. While it is now popular to say that Hestia gave up her seat to Dionysos, no ancient writer mentions this.
Hades is usually not on the list. It would be strange for the God of the Dead to be hanging out in the home of the immortals.

- I love Greek mythology, as Brendan Fraser put it: ?I guess darkness serves a purpose: to show us that there is redemption through chaos. I believe in that. I think that's the basis of Greek mythology.?
Thanks for this lens.
