Classical Art Never Goes Out of Style!

Welcome to the Squidoo lens for my "It's All Greek to Me" Gift Shop, selling unique gifts with an ancient Greek twist!

Many of you have visited my Ancient Greece Odyssey: A Traveller's Journal travel diary with photos, stories, and all sorts of information about the art, monuments, sites -- and sights! -- of the classical Greek world.

Well, I have been taking my best photos and using Cafepress to print these designs on shirts, mugs, greeting cards, journals, book bags, mousepads, and other items. All photographs are my own, so you won't find these exact designs anywhere else. Cafepress' well-known print-on-demand service handles secure ordering and shipping and gives me a small commission for each item.

I've had my shop now for two years. It helps me pay for my books for graduate school and keep food in the cat's dish. I'm adding new designs to my shop when my studies permit.

Below is a selection of SOME of the designs available. Browse the items below or click the banner to go to my store's catalog on Cafepress!

Unique gifts with an ancient Greek twist

Selections from my Shop: It's All Greek to Me!

Art from Athens with Classic Sense of Humor

T-shirts, mousepads, and gifts featuring art from ancient Greece My shop logo is also my most popular design.

It's my photo of the Diadoumenos, a beautiful 5th-century-BC statue of an athlete from the National Museum in Athens. You can read more about this statue or view and learn about other wonderful art in this museum in my Greece Travel Diary, Day 3.

Here's a few selections from the "It's All Greek to Me!" section of my store. Click out the link for mugs, mousepads, and other styles of shirts featuring this design.

The Newest Selections From My Shop: Zeus and Asklepios

Here's the latest two designs. Asklepios was the god of healing, and I thought he'd make a cute "Get Well Soon!" card. Of course, he's also available on other types of gifts. Zeus, ruler of Olympus, head honcho and all-around symbol of the patriarchy cuts a striking pose on T-shirts, mugs, and other goodies.

Selections from my Shop: Apollo, Greek God of Prophecy

Straight from the Oracle of Delphi

Apollo, Greek god of prophecy, music, light and logic had a famous oracle at a place called Delphi, high up in the mountains.

This design is a painting on the inside of an ancient pottery cup showing the god Apollo and the wise raven that sometimes served as his companion. Apollo is holding his lyre (a kind of harp) and pouring out an offering of clear water, wine, or oil to himself using a cup just like this one!

Some of the items in the Apollo section of my shop also have a full-color photograph of Delphi on the back. (The mug, for example.)

Selections from my Shop: Temple of Hephaistos

One of the most beautiful sights in Athens

This classical Greek temple to the smith-god Hephaistos is in the Athenian Agora, and it really stands out. The Parthenon has been battered by wars and air pollution and looting. The Temple of Hephaistos is in much better shape -- in fact, it's the only ancient Greek temple that still has its original roof!

You can follow me around Athens and the Agora on Day Two of My Ancient Greece Odyssey lens.

Here are a few items from the Temple of Hephaistos section of my shop featuring this fine photo.

Selections from my Shop: Head of Athena

Beautiful marble sculpture from Athens, Greece

I fell in love with this giant head of Athena in the National Museum. It's slightly discolored from natural oxidation in the marble, but it's still a really wonderful image. Part II of Ancient Greece Odyssey includes my photo gallery of this museum, so you can see some of the other beautiful art surrounding this sculpture.

Here are a few selections from the Head of Athena section of my shop.

Selections from My Shop: The Goddess Persephone

Maiden of spring, goddess of the underworld

This is one of many striking archaic (6th century BC) Greek statues set up in honor of a daughter or other girl who died young. They are portrayed as the maiden goddess Persephone, who was abducted by Hades the god of death but who returns each spring bringing back life and new green to the upper world.

You can learn more about archaic Greek art and follow me on a photo-tour of the Acropolis Museum in Part II, Day 3 of Ancient Greece Odyssey. Or learn more about Persephone and her mother Demeter in Part III of Ancient Greece Odyssey: Eleusis.

Below are a few selections from the Persephone section of my online shop. (More to come)

Selections from my Shop: Archaic Athena

Goddess of wisdom, war, and tactics takes aim at her enemies

This amazing statue once stood on the pediment (gable) of the even older temple that the Parthenon replaced. The Old Temple of Athena was burned by the Persians in the 5th century BC when they attacked and nearly destroyed Athens. After the war, the Athenians lovingly gathered up the pieces and buried them before starting rebuilding.

Here the goddess Athena strikes across the landscape brandishing her aegis, a snake-fringed mantle that struck terror into her foes. The piece resides in the Acropolis Museum in Athens with the Persephone seen above.

I had fun cropping this photo to remove lights and other details that were in the way -- I think the slanted borders adds to the drama of the image!

You can learn more about how Athena came to be the patron goddess of ancient Athens in Part I of Ancient Greece Odyssey.

Wow, some fine gift ideas there, I love good gifts. My suggestions are about home made gift baskets, not quite up to the same standard as your Greek art, but still a nice gift
