A Scribbler and a Doodler
I've been dabbling with computer art since...gah, 1979! I started drawing in Hi-res graphics on an Apple ][ plus, and I've even used a Koalapad, the first PC drawing tablet, on a Commodore 64 in 1981. I'm not a great artist, because I don't practice enough, but I enjoy scribbling.
So for what it's worth, here's my computer art. Nearly all of it was drawn using an Wacom Intuos Tablet
and Corel Painter
.

Fractal Design Painter
An Early Simulated Media Program
In 1997, I picked up Fractal Expression, a short-lived drawing program that let you adjust curves and define them as strokes. This meant I could draw a stroke with a mouse, then move it around! It was a lot easier to use than a drawing tablet for those of us who make "oopses".
My first attempt was Artemis, a quick sketch inspired by a statue in Huntington Gardens:

I think the bird batik up top was also done on Fractal Expression. Here's another of these, a buffalo:

Simulated Media
The funny thing is that I had an easier time with the old original Painter program, with its chalks, textured paper and colored pencil. I've never mastered the newer, fancier versions of the program.

These were drawn on a PowerBase Mac Clone -- now that was great computer! These are characters from a novel I've never published (because, frankly, it was awful, but I still like these characters.)

The drawing below was done with onionskinning -- a faint transparent photo under the painting, so you might consider it photomanip. I don't know what photo it was, but it was definitely some old photo of David Warner, one of my favorite character actors. When I'm writing a character, I'll often try and think of an actor who could play him/her, to help me with characterization:

Here's an example of onionskinning with a photo of Keira Knightley. As you can see, even WITH a photo reference you still have to be able to draw (and for the most part, I'm only showing you my GOOD drawings):

That program had some funky paint settings:

Corel Painter
Drawing Program / Painting Program For Digital Artists
Corel Painter 12
Amazon Price: $199.92 (as of 05/31/2012)![]()
The main problem with Corel Painter is that it's too true to life: if you're good with watercolor, pencil, ink, etc, you'll do great, but if you're not so great an artist, it's hard to fake it.
However, if you ARE an artist, get this program! Also, an Intuos Drawing Tablet. Of course, you probably have one.
Painter Classic Doodles
Drawing in class...naughty naughty
I always doodled in class not because I wasn't paying attention, but because it helped me stay awake. So when I began taking notes on a laptop, I'd tuck a painter window behind my main text window and doodle on the trackpad with my thumb. I loved Painter Classic because it had several smear and distort tools.
Surprisingly, this could sometimes result in rather pretty effects, although it's all finger painting!

Greek Trireme
Yet another onionskinning painting
I must have done this painting while working on this lens about an ancient Greek warship, although I don't actually remember doing it...

I Miss Painter Classic!

Done With Corel Painter 10
This is just harder... I don't know why
I've been busy these last few years (grad school, work!) and have gotten out of the habit of drawing much. Also, I have more trouble with the newer version of Painter. Probably if I worked with it more, I'd get the hang of it.
Anyway, here's a few more.

- WOW your art is amazing, I really like your style you have real talent and it shows. I like your Dragon image best, mainly because I love dragons but all of your work is stunning. Blessed and featured on "squid-angel-of-digital-art". Thanks for an interesting insight to your design techniques.
