Guestbook for Fellow Squids

From the lens Greekgeek's Squidoo Stats.

Feel free to drop a note! And please share this lens with other Squidoo members; I'm eager to see your opinions about tier breakdowns.

  • MSchindel May 23, 2012 @ 11:03 am | delete
I had no idea about the tier system. Thanks for sharing this information and congratulations on sharing your significant knowledge in a way that allows you to be compensated for it!
  • psiloveyou May 21, 2012 @ 12:56 pm | delete
More great information! I know it's not good for you, but it's good to know that even lensmasters who have been here for years have duds and Tier 3 lenses.
  • TxCowboyDancer May 16, 2012 @ 12:05 pm | delete
I have a question which actually was asked in the guestbook on another lens by another little squidlet like myself. ;-) "Why are there two different numbers for lens rank, one on the dashboard and one on the lens itself?"

My guess is that the stats on the dashboard are the ones at the close of the day last night at midnight (Eastern Time US(?)).

The stats on the lens itself includes additional visits and data and can fluctuate slightly up or down throughout the day.

    How close am I? :-)
  • Greekgeek May 16, 2012 @ 5:34 pm | delete
    Er... ah...um...I donno? :)

I haven't caught Squidoo at a time when the dashboard lensrank and the published lensrank are different, but if that ever happens, I bet you're right!

To be even more confusing, the published lens lists TWO different ranks at the top of the page. The first rank is its rank within its main subtopic (Cars, Education, Video Games, etc): then it's being compared ONLY against the other lenses in that particular topic. The second is its overall Squidoo-wide lensrank -- the one that actually counts for earnings purposes!

Getting a good rank within the subcategory is useful because the best-ranked lenses in each topic and subtopic are listed on the front page of that topic.

Lensrank is only calculated once a day. For a while it's been happening around 8AM EST, but it used to vary wildly.

Um... I hope that scattershot answer hit your question somewhere; one should not attempt to think while sporting a migraine!

  • TheMummyNextDoor Apr 24, 2012 @ 2:31 pm | delete
Very thorough. I'm still new to all this so don't know if I'll find the tier system fair or not, I suppose it depends whether or not it works for me!
  • mariajomith Apr 20, 2012 @ 9:02 am | delete
very inspirational. i am sad to see that my lenses do not get much attention. I do not spend alot of time trying to gain followers, i was hopting they could stand on their own.
  • wbmstrz Apr 20, 2012 @ 5:30 am | delete
Thanks so much for sharing! I'm new and had no idea how much you can earn and with how many lenses. Thanks again!

What an amazingly analytical piece. I have bookmarked it, thereby making it one of the two lenses I have bookmarked. You make it seem possible to earn serious money on squidoo :)
  • JJNW Mar 8, 2012 @ 6:39 pm | delete
You are so generous with your knowledge. I love it!

I am working my way through SquidAngel *blessing* a lens for each of the top 40 level 80 Squids. Including this one! WOOT!

had some great progress here payout due in february hope to start my own earning lens.
  • JC2011 Jan 23, 2012 @ 11:34 am | delete
I really like this lens. It helps show those of us just starting out that it takes a lot to be successful. It is easy to get discouraged when I can't get a lens out of tier 3, but over half of yours are tier 3. This helps the new people realize that most of our lenses are not going to be "hits" and to keep at it.
  • MillBucks Jan 23, 2012 @ 6:21 am | delete
Nice to see someone who has uncovered the secret for success on Squidoo, I hope someday I can see these types of earnings as well. I have just started my 3rd week since I joined and am currently working on my 6th lens, trial and error so see what happens. Keep up the great work!
  • TrentAdamsCA Jan 15, 2012 @ 7:26 pm | delete
Thanks. I always enjoy your cheery posts. So far, I'm doing zilch here -- barely any traffic and no sales. Disappointing, but I'll leave them up and see if they ripen. I'm getting better traffic on Blogger for a fraction of the effort I've put into promoting my Squidoo lenses. Good to know you're doing so well.
  • klaird Jan 12, 2012 @ 12:17 am | delete
Thanks for sharing your stats. I like your weekly spreadsheet to keep track of your goals. I think I need to make one to keep me on track!
  • girlfriendfactory Jan 8, 2012 @ 12:09 pm | delete
I'm not so impressed by how well you are doing or not doing but more by how goal oriented you are with it, how well you keep up with it, how organized you are with it and how focused it makes you. I don't think the money is anything but gravy compared to the rest. You are a wonder to behold! I want to be like you when I grow up! Great job!
  • Lindrus Dec 29, 2011 @ 7:42 am | delete
Congratulations! You have done really well on Squidoo. That's nice to see and makes me hope that there is a way to be successful.

I'm happy to see you doing well on Squidoo, as you have so generously shared your knowledge with others here to help them out. But I must confess my favorite thing on this page is the "Shameless Plug Widget." Love it!!

  • MiddleSister Sep 24, 2011 @ 5:04 pm | delete
On your blog, you claim not to be an expert. I beg to differ. All the signs of expert-hood are in your analysis, knowledge, and obvious success. Whether you like it or not, I think of you as an expert!
  • franstan Sep 5, 2011 @ 7:40 pm | delete
Great lens. I have recently started to devote time to Squidoo and I am anxiously awaiting the stats for August
  • theoxingyi Aug 24, 2011 @ 4:17 pm | delete
Way to grow your lenses! I am just trying to decide how deep into squidoo I want to go and it seems like the best thing to do is not to dither too much, but to jump in with both feet and get started. Very inspirational.!
  • Mickie_G Jul 24, 2011 @ 7:49 am | delete
Again, you amaze me. Like you, my earnings have grown over the years I have been on Squidoo. I have never paid attention to the stats, but lately I am checking the clickouts and sales on my best earning lenses to try and understand what I am doing "right".

I am wondering if there is a way to see if the sales were made by Squidoo members or random visitors--as if that matters.
  • Greekgeek Jul 25, 2011 @ 1:38 am | delete
There's no way to gather any data about our visitors beyond what they clicked on and what they bought. So no, we can't tell that.

But I'd predict that nearly every sale is from off-site.
  • pablina Jul 6, 2011 @ 7:29 am | delete
Nice lense. You have put a lot of work into creating different tables to track your earnings aswell which is cool to see. :0

  • scarlettohairy May 15, 2011 @ 1:12 am | delete
Wow, you love spreadsheets! I am not that anal about numbers but love looking at yours! Am marking this lens a favorite so I can refer back to it. Thanks!
  • Pukeko May 10, 2011 @ 5:57 am | delete
What a lot of work to keep track of all your traffic. I only track the monthly payout. But I do have a spreadsheet for all promotion.
  • Greekgeek May 10, 2011 @ 10:17 am | delete
Well, for a long time, I was more interested in traffic than payout, oddly enough. As a writer and/or teacher, I just wanted to know I was reaching people... I wasn't in it for the money!

It also helps that I have some rudimentary programming skills. Nothing modern, but nearly everything you see on this page is automated so all I have to do is copy the raw data from the Squidoo dashboard and poke two buttons to get my computer to pluck out the data I'm interested in.
  • WeirdStuff Apr 19, 2011 @ 11:06 am | delete
Wow, I see you have your goals and processes clearly set!
  • GonnaFly Apr 18, 2011 @ 5:36 pm | delete
What an excellent record. I used to keep DAILY records but that became overwhelming, so I just stopped altogether. Weekly looks more manageable. It looks like you're on track for a record-breaking year. I love your answer too (below) that Squidoo is a coop.
  • Geekgurl Apr 15, 2011 @ 11:56 am | delete
Greek, I hope you have continue success. I know I saw you on the forums a couple weeks a go frustrated about punching out all these lenses to keep up with your goal. I hope everything worked out. You are an amazing writer, researcher, and lensmaster!
  • rorymullen Apr 13, 2011 @ 11:10 pm | delete
This is a amazing way to make money. I will continue to make money to ensure I will compete at your level.
  • Greekgeek Apr 15, 2011 @ 9:58 pm | delete
The nice thing about Squidoo is that it's a coop. Earnings for Adsense are divvied among the top 85,000 lenses. That's a lot of chances to get a payout. And the more all of our lenses earn, the more money there is to go around. Therefore... we don't have to compete; we can help each other! :)
  • banapple Mar 26, 2011 @ 9:06 am | delete
Great job on the high payouts...plus the tier 1 and 2 lenses. I'm slowly getting up there.
  • tagsforkids Mar 21, 2011 @ 2:13 pm | delete
Wow, very nice! I guess I should stop playing with my Squidoodles and try writing some lenses! :-) Thanks for sharing the info.

Looking at the snapshot of your dashboard should be encouraging, instead I found deflating (for me). There is just SO much to learn, and not enough hours in the day. I spend about 2 to 3 days reading lenses and other informative articles trying to get my head around all this SEO and other factors that contribute to the ability to make money at this. I wrestle with whether I shouldnt be spending more time just making better lenses.

Wow, thanks so much for the interesting insights! It really inspires me to get crackin' (or kraken, you might say) and build more lenses. I really appreciate a peek into the world of a Giant Squid's dashboard. Gives me a little push to work harder and try and get that GS status for Christmas - well, sort of... next application deadline is Dec 30 after all!

Keep up the great work. :)

I have had two paydays now and I am not sure how you know which lenses are in which tier. I understand the ranking...but is it based on a certain day or how? I am keeping track of what I earn but need to understand more about how it breaks down.
  • Greekgeek Oct 6, 2010 @ 7:07 pm | delete
*deleted old reply which is now seriously outdated*

The tier payout is based on average lensrank for each lens over the course of the month. See Getting the Most Out of Squidoo Stats and/or Understanding Squidoo Payouts for how you can monitor your lensrank and see exactly which lenses earned what and why!

I'm excited to focus more on building my squidoo-self. Is SEO the only benefit to publish on squidoo vs. your own blog?
  • Greekgeek Jul 12, 2010 @ 12:59 am | delete
Oh, goodness, no! I'd bet that most Squidoo users don't even realize you can use Squidoo for SEO purposes. Squidoo serves many functions, but it's not really like a blog. A blog is an ongoing, longterm magazine, so to speak, on one topic, with dated articles. Squidoo is a single short, focused page on a topic, integrating numerous different widgets called modules -- for videos, polls, photo galleries, debates, updated third party merchant modules from Amazon and eBay and many other merchants (without your having to become an affiliate), and...well, I could go on all day, but Squidoo is good for (a) earning money, (b) sharing great links and resources on a single topic, passion, or product, (c) creating a very creative page on something you love...I could go on, but I suggest checking out the 10 examples on http://www.squidoo.com/is-squidoo-a-scam for just a few different ways that members have used Squidoo.

  • Greekgeek May 5, 2009 @ 7:28 pm | in reply to 4Bodyworkers | delete
I'm doing it as a hobby, because I enjoy Squidoo.
People who treat Squidoo as a business can sometimes make a lot more money. A minority (I think it's about 5%) pull in a triple-digit monthly income with Squidoo, usually using affiliate marketing to supplement Squidoo's payout. (See my Is Squidoo a Scam lens for links to some other people's results and payouts).
I believe that Squidoo is not the most EFFICIENT way to make money online, but for some people it works pretty well. For a lot more people it's a way to make some money while promoting a website, blog, or business. And for a lot of people it's a fun way to host your own content and get paid for it (a bit) or raise money for charities you like.
So, different people are more or less successful with Squidoo.
I will note that I expect my income to double this month based on the work I did in March! :D
  • 4Bodyworkers May 5, 2009 @ 5:26 am | delete
Very interesting stuff. My Question would be....are you trying to make money or just love squidoo. By your paypal, makes me believe this is not the place to put my career....lol
