Being an archaeologist in Greece...
My first encounter with the term archaeology was when I was 8 years old, one evening in Hydra. I was returning home with my mom and we met a man on our way that stopped and chatted a little bit with my mom. I remember, he was dressed in white linen pants and white linen shirt, a man with grayish to white long hair and beard; to me looked like a mythical figure like Jeus or Poseidon! I couldn't hear what they were saying bat I could hear his voice slow, clear and warm. After he left I asked my mother who this person was and she said he was an "Archaeologist". The word itself had a great impact on me immediately and I asked for more details and by the time we arrived home I had made my decision: I was going to become an archaeologist!
And so I did... I grew up and I end up studying Archaeology in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. Living in Greece and studying this subject gave me the chance to visit almost all the archaeological sites in Greece (and not only) and of course almost all the museums! The reason I make this lens is because I have the knowledge, I'm aware of places most people aren't and I want to share with you this guide to the Greek Museums!!!
Are you willing to follow me in this journey?

Athens is a land that has been inhabited for a few thousands years already and as you can imagine you can find all sorts of museums in the city! Join me as we visit the different museums of Athens, from Archaeological museums to modern art and folklore! Well, it is the capital of Greece you know... Archaeological and Historic Museums of Athens
We have to start with the basics... this is Athens after all!
- National Museum of Athens
- It is the most important archaeological museum in Greece and one of the richest in the world concerning ancient Greek art. Its collections are representative of all the cultures that flourished in Greece.
The construction of the museum was begun in 1866 and completed in 1889 with the gradual addition of the west wing in 1874, of the north in 1881, of the south in 1885 and finally, of the east wing. The building was erected in a large plot donated by Helen Tositsa, with the financial support of Demetrios and Nicolaos Vernardakis, the Archaeological Society and the Greek state.
- Byzantine and Christian Museum
- The collections of the Byzantine Museum show the course of Greek art from the 4th to the 19th century. They comprise sculptural works, paintings and small works of all sorts. These works represent the artistic production of the Greek area, and other regions both central and peripheral of the Byzantine empire and subsequently of Hellenism on into post-Byzantine times.

- National Historical Museum
- The National Historical Museum belongs to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece, which was founded in 1882 with the purpose of seeking out, collecting and preserving objects and written evidence which help to shed light on the history of Modern Greece.

- Epigraphical Museum
- The Epigraphical Museum was founded in 1885 and it was established in the ground floor of the building of the National Archaeological Museum, which was constructed between 1866 and 1889, according to architectural plans by L.Lange and E.Ziller.

- Museum of the Ancient Agora (Stoa of Attalos)
- The Agora museum is housed in the Stoa of Attalos, a reconstructed building of around 150 B.C. The characteristic feature of the mseum is that the exhibits are all closely connected with the Athenian Democracy, as the Agora was the focus of the city's public life.

- Museum of Cycladic Art
- The Museum of Cycladic Art is devoted to the study and promotion of ancient Greek art. It was founded in 1986 in order to house the collection of Cycladic and Ancient Greek art belonging to Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Starting in the early Sixties, and with a permit by the Greek State, the couple collected Greek antiquities, with special interest in the prehistoric art from the Cycladic islands.

- The Acropolis Museum
- It is one of the most important museums in the world. It temporarily houses masterpieces of the ancient Greek civilization, dedicated to the most important of the Athenian sanctuaries, the "temenos" of Athena Parthenos. Preparations for the erection of the New Acropolis Museum have already begun.

- Centre for the Acropolis Studies
- The building was constructed in 1836 by the Bavarian engineer Von Weiler. For a long period it was used as a military hospital and later, as the Gendarmes' Barracks. In 1978 it was offered to the Ministry of Culture and in 1985-87 was repaired in order to serve all its present functions.
The museum organizes educational programmes for students of primary and secondary schools, but also houses congresses and other activities in the lecture hall, as well as temporary exhibitions. Workshops and storerooms for the casts are installed on the basement of the building.
- Archaeological Museum of Kerameikos
- The museum of Kerameikos was built in 1937 on the plans of H. Johannes, with a donation of Gustav Oberlaender. It was enlarged in the 1960's with the support of the Boehringer brothers.%uFFFDhe exhibits are displayed in chronological order, but also according to their subjects and their provenance.

- War Museum of Athens
- Amidst the row of museums on Vassilissis Sophias Avenue stands the War Museum of Athens which explores the history of warfare. It covers a period of thousands of years, from pre-historic times until today and features all sorts of weapons - from stone axes to heavy artillery. The oldest exhibits are primitive weapons used in the stone age as well as more recent finds from the early bronze age. Other exhibits cover the classical and medieval period, the Greek War of Independence and conflicts of the 20th century - from the Balkan wars to the Second World War. You can even climb into the cockpit of a fighter plane.

- Museum of the City of Athens
- Athens, the oldest and most famous city of Europe, presents part of her most recent History: the period commencing in 1832, when she was appointed capital of the newly-founded Modern Greek State by its first king, Otto. The tour of the Museum includes many other sectors of the History, Civilisation and Life of Athens (both past and contemporary). Several specific collections and typical sitting and living rooms of the Athenian 19th century aristocracy present a rich view of the life in Athens at the time. We thank you for your visit, and wish you a pleasant tour in our Museum.

- Numismatic Museum
- The Numismatic Museum of Athens, with a history going back to 1829, is one of the few of its kind in the world and the only such museum in the Balkans. It provides continuous educational support for Hellenism in terms of numismatics, history and art history.

- The Jewish Museum of Greece
- The idea of building a Jewish Museum of Greece was first conceived in the 1970's by members of the Jewish Community of Athens, who offered every kind of assistance towards the realisation of this dream. The Museum was first established in 1977 and housed in a small room next to the city's synagogue. It housed objects salvaged from WW II, whether artefacts, documents and manuscripts of the 19th and 20th centuries, or the jewellery of the Jews of Thrace that had been seized by the Bulgarians in 1943. The latter had been returned to the Greek government after the abdication of the Bulgarian king and the establishment of a communist regime in the country.
