Why Another Greek Museums Lens?

When I started my first lens about the Greek Museums I hadn't taken under consideration the amount of museums you can find around Greece! By the moment I finished with the two major cities of Greece, Athens and Thessaloniki, I figured out that my lens was too big and difficult to manage. So I decided to create a second lens which I hope will cover the island of Crete. Nevertheless, don't think that this lens is going to have less museums than the first one; if one thing, Greeks have a thing about museums and wherever there is an archaeological place you'll find attached a museum! So relax and enjoy the fly... We are soaring over the beautiful island of Crete!

CRETE

The beautiful island of Crete in southern Greece is mostly famous for its Minoan Period findings but not only...

Crete is one of the richest cultural places in Greece. Not only it has been the center of the Minoan Civilization, which has been one of the biggest civilizations of the Mediterranean area, but also has a unique literary tradition.

Archaeological Museums in Crete

Archaeological Museum of Herakleion
It houses the most important and representative finds of the Minoan civilization.
Archaeological Museum of Chania
The museum is housed in the katholikon of the Venetian monastery of St. Francis. During the period of the Turkish occupation it was the Muslim mosque of Yussuf Pasha, while in modern times it was used as a cinema or a storehouse for military equipment.
Archaeological Museum of Aghios Nikolaos
The Museum of Aghios Nikolaos was founded in 1970 in order to house the numerous new archaeological finds from eastern Crete, which until then, were housed in the Museum of Herakleion.
Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon
Since 1991, the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon has been housed in the pentagonal building opposite the main gate of the Fortetsa. The building was constructed by the Turks in an effort to strengthen the city's defence.
Archaeological Museum of Seteia
The Archaeological Museum of Seteia contains the most important finds from eastern Crete. Apart from the exhibition halls, the museum has storerooms and workshops, as well as offices for scholars and the staff.
Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania
The wealth of archaeological material yielded by excavations conducted over many years by the 13th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities in the county of Chania, and also by retrieval of material and donations, forms a Collection that records, with great clarity, the history of the westernmost county in Crete from Early Christian times to the period of Turkish rule.
