Ham and Green Beans is an old PA Dutch recipe
There are a lot of old PA Dutch recipes that no one has heard of. Shoofly Pie, Chicken Pot Pie without the crust (far superior to crusted pot pie), Fastnachts, original Whoopie Pies ... the list goes on, and on.
This brings us to Ham and Green Beans.
I was born and raised in Pennsylvania, right in the heart of Amish Country. Not only that, I'm of Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. I grew up with Ham and Green Beans, as did my own children, and now I'm sharing my recipe with all of you!
Ingredient List For Ham & Green Beans
Ham and Green Beans
3-4 lb bone-in ham, uncooked
1-2 lb green beans, trimmed or 4 cans green beans
5-6 potatoes, peeled and cut into large pieces
salt and pepper to taste
Cooking Instructions
1. In a large stock pot, cover the ham with water. Boil for 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Add extra water to cover as needed.
2. Add green beans to the pot and cook for 20 - 30 minutes. Remove the ham and add the potatoes. Cut or shred the meat while the potatoes cook until tender, about 30 minutes. Add the meat back to the pot and heat until warmed through. Let simmer until ready to serve.

- Now you're talking! I could live off of green beans and potatoes that have been "rightly seasoned" by ham!

- I love this recipe, but I thought it was a "southern" idea! LOL
I have not had much luck cooking green beans in a crockpot. On top of the stove is the best way to cook fresh green beans in my home.

- Now if you cooked those green beans for about 4 more hours with the ham hock, they would taste like our Southern Green Beans but these do sound delicious.
