That is the essence of Danny Seo's Conscious Style philosophy. As a leading environmentalist, Seo believes it doesn't take much time, effort or money to make a difference in the world. It's the small choices we make everyday-from what we wear to what we furnish our homes with-that have a tremendous impact. In this gorgeously illustrated book, Seo describes hundreds of unique, readily available products and easy projects to help you create a comfortable, elegant living space without harming the planet.

In Conscious Style Home, Seo transforms his parents' suburban home. Recycled paint in gorgeous colors brightens the rooms; bamboo blinds allow plenty of natural light; simple white canvas and hemp slipcovers give sofas and chairs a face-lift; recycled glass tiles accent the bathroom; luxurious organic cotton sheets and fluffy comforters stuffed with EcoSpun (made from recycled bottles) make the bedrooms a sanctuary.

So, whether you're planning to paint a wall, re-decorate a cluttered office, plant a garden, re-do the kitchen, or buy a new comforter, Conscious Style Home is an invaluable resource packed with easy projects, creative ideas and suggestions for enhancing your living space, indoors and out.

Through common remodeling projects, such as replacing kitchen cabinets and installing new countertops, readers are presented with choices for using green, nontoxic building materials and techniques. Some of the topics covered include reducing home energy use, selecting nontoxic materials, saving water, and supporting the environment through the use of products that are manufactured responsibly or that come from sustainable natural resources.

In our home, we have made it more eco-friendly by. . .

jballs6 says:

we have installed a new eco boiler, double glazed window and doors, insulated the loft, energy saving bulbs , cavity wall insulation.

Steve_Kaye says:

We have: installed more efficient faucets and toilets, painted the house with a heat reflective paint, installed double pane windows, put all transformers on circuit strips so that they can be turned off at night, replaced all the bulbs with CFL bulbs. We also stopped watching TV, cook most of our meals in one pot or the microwave, turn off lights when we leave a room. By the way, our utility costs are really, really low.

UKGhostwriter says:

I wanted to make mine eco friendly by staying in bed all day - never worked but worth a try!

aj2008 says:

Low energy lightbulbs; hubby cycles to work; children walk to school; recycle everything we can: cans, bottles, plastics, textiles, cardboard; use soapnuts; have not repaired the tumble drier; compost waste food; garden organically; give unwanted goods away on freecycle.....

Our home is not eco-friendly.

We certainly try to be eco friendly - the iron is this; two teenage daughters lecture us about all things green and then leave lights on, appliances on and doors open in winter!

I am really happy to see more and more sustainable products on the design horizon, but there is still a long way to go. Great information. Thanks!

You are absolutely correct. Losing your home takes precedence over being eco-friendly. But being eco-friendly can also mean saving money, as well as the earth. And putting these practices in place in a wise manner will help everyone in the end.

My prayers are with anyone who is losing their home due to the current economy.
  • drs2biz Sep 2, 2009 @ 4:47 pm | delete
A touchy subject lately, as lots of people are losing their homes to the "Global Financial Crisis" (read Depression). Great information, however, Paula. Interesting and thought-provoking. 5 *s.
