Green Fried Tomatoes - a Southern Delicacy

Fall is coming, and there is a nip in the air. Soon we will have the first frost of the year, the beginning of fall, my favorite season. But, what to do with all the tomatoes in my garden that haven't had time to ripen? Will they all go to waste? Fortunately, the answer is a happy "no." They don't have to be ripe to be used! How? By using them to make Green Fried Tomatoes, a Southern delicacy! Besides making Fried Green Tomatoes (made famous by a movie of the same name), they can be used to make Green Tomato Pie, Green Tomato Chutney, Tomato and Raspberry Jam, Salsa, and many other tasty dishes.
Besides being tasty, green tomatoes are also highly nutritious. They are very low in saturated fat and contain no cholesterol. They are also high in dietary fiber, manganese, pantothenic acid, potassium, thiamin, and many other important nutrients. The only downside is they're high in sugar. Green fried tomatoes are easy to prepare and I encourage you to try them, as well as some of the other green tomato recipes I link to from this lens. Even if it turns out that you don't like them, green tomatoes still make a good addition to vegetable drinks you can make in a VitaMix blender.

Classic Green Fried Tomatoes

Easy to Make and Good to Eat

This recipe is so simple to prepare that I think even my husband could do it. It's so simple I almost hesitate to call it a recipe.

Ingredients
6 large green tomatoes
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
corn meal
salt and pepper
2 pats butter
vegetable oil

Beat the egg and milk together into a thin mixture. Wash the tomatoes and slice into 1/4 to 3/8 inch slices. Dip the tomato slices into the milk/egg mix and then into the corn meal (both sides). Put the butter and vegetable oil into a pan and melt over medium to high heat, swirling the pan to blend the butter and oil. Fry the tomato slices on one side until golden brown, about 3 minutes. Turn over and fry until second side is also golden brown. Remove from heat, salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy this southern classic with a nice glass of cold, homemade lemonade.

Where to Get Green Tomatoes?

The best way is to grow your own

Since most stores only carry ripe tomatoes, the best way to get green tomatoes is to grow your own. Tomatoes are fun and easy to grow. In spring time, you can buy tomato plants at any nursery or home improvement store. Some larger grocery and hardware stores even carry them. However, I recommend growing them from seeds.
Growing tomatoes from seeds is fun and easy, and gives you access to many more varieties than are available as seedlings from a nursery. Companies that have large varieties of tomato seeds include Burpee, Heirloom Seeds, Johnie's Seeds, Tomato Bob, Tomato Fest, and others. For green fried tomatoes, you will want to select a variety that gets fairly big. If you are cutting them up for salsa or boiling them down for sauce, you can choose any variety regardless of size.
