Designated in 1991, it is one of Germany's 14 biosphere reserves and includes 185,000 ha.
"Biosphere reserves are representative parts of natural and cultural landscapes extending over large areas. They help to formulate and implement protection, maintenance and development policies in an exemplary way. Every forest community which exists in the Rhone is represented by a core area. This is due to the great variety of local conditions in the biosphere reserve.
