How to evaluate whether an architect knows about green residential home design

Sustainable design means different things to different people...

Some architects choose to specialize in a certain type of construction, as well. With the advent of more readily-available sustainable building supplies, the number of architects with knowledge and experience in designing environmentally-friendly homes is increasing. Sustainable design can mean different things to different people, so it is crucial to investigate an architect's philosophy before making a commitment. Does the residential architect plan to spend time to optimize the building's location on the site in order to take advantage of natural light and use existing vegetation and other features for shade or blockage of wind? Do they normally work with materials from sources that are readily renewable? How about utilizing recycled materials? What is their commitment to promoting ongoing efficiency and savings through the use of alternative power sources and recycling water, whenever possible? Do they have a network of suppliers of building materials who are local, thereby minimizing transportation costs and the fuel required to transport supplies from long distances?

Research your choices for your residential project

The reward is in the work

Once you have found an architect with a general philosophy that fits with yours, it's important to look at some of their previous work. Even if a residential architect's portfolio doesn't precisely match your vision of your dream home, consider the general character and style of the homes they have designed. If you find that their previous work is appealing to you, it is almost certain that they are well-qualified to transform your vision into a reality.

What do you mean by a "green" building?

What makes it different?

Buildings of the world consume:

  • 40% of the world's energy & materials

  • 25% of the wood harvested

  • 17% of our water

The average American house uses:

  • 13,127 board feet of lumber

  • 6,212 square feet of sheathing

  • 2,000 square feet of flooring

In the U.S., buildings account for:

  • 36% of total electricity consumption

  • 62% of electricity use

  • 30% of greenhouse gas emissions

  • 37% of ozone depletion potential

And, ironically enough, most of us spend 90% of our time indoors.

How can I determine if a material is green or not?

Elimentary, Watson

Ask yourself these six questions when looking at any material:

  1. Where did this material come from?

  2. What are the by-products of its' manufacturer?

  3. How is the material delivered and installed?

  4. How is the material maintained and operated?

  5. How healthy are the materials?

  6. What do we do with them once we are done with these materials?

This is a shorthand approach looking at the entire lifecycle of a material.

My favorite green building

Quite possibly the nicest church in the world...

Thorncrown Chapel in Arkansas. Believe it or not this beautiful piece of sustainable architecture was built almost thirty years ago.
