Living Green by Innovation or by Invention-That Is The Question

Recently, I created a lens on eco-friendly inventions. As I conducted my research, and began to write the lens, two things rapidly became evident.

I am more invested in living green innovatively than in the creation of new green inventions. Also, that the line between invention and innovation can easily become blurred. I became confused myself, and had to resort to actually looking up definitions for the two words to be sure of the difference.

Invention is the creation of something new and largely untested. Innovation is the utilization of that creation.

Living green innovation is more important to me because that means that we are working with materials and resources that we already have to preserve and help our planet. I firmly believe that concept is at the fundamental core of living green.

Of course, now my fellow lens masters know that I will soon be sending out an updated Squicast about my eco-friendly inventions lens-- after revisions. However, for the time being, let's push on to this lens about living green innovations!

Living Green Innovation-or Green Inventions

Which option do you think the earth and mankind will benefit from more? Is Living green innovation what we should be putting research and finances into, or are new green inventions more deserving of our time and attention?

Living Green Innovation or Green Invention

Loading

Living green innovation is better because we are using resources that we already have.

kzvikzvi1 says:

preserving should also include consistently thinking about new ways.

Tipi says:

Oh my, now that's a chicken and the egg question for sure!

Vallygems1 says:

Difficult but probaly better to use what we have and then keep reusing

OldStones says:

Green innovation is something we can start to do today. As we look for new innovative ways to live green green invention will follow. The key is to convince the majority of people that they need to change the way they do things.

Close2Art says:

Green innovation so we can get started right away...but for the long run we'll need some new inventions.

Living green invention is better because we are going to consistently need new ways to preserve our lifestyle and planet.

Don_McCyclist says:

While I certainly appreciate everyone's efforts to make use of what's already there to reduce our ecological impact and live in harmony with the earth, lack of imagination could kill our generations-long quest away from destructive technology and towards understanding our culture within its ecological context. I love to tinker. Many solutions are very specific to situations. Green living opens a whole realm of invention we can celebrate as we adopt others' inventions to compliment our inventions and empower us to say NO to polluting and poisoning in the name of "prosperity."

says:

i think Invention is little bit better than Innovation...same way as creation is better than modification !!

Brite-Ideas says:

I would say both, but Green Invention is key (in my humble opinion). New products, new ways of doing things...all critical.

ScrumptiousIndia says:

Living green innovation is good. But we never know what future holds for us. Our needs are increasingly constantly. So new inventions are a must. May be some day we may invent something that will put an end to all our problems!

Living Green Innovations in Agriculture

The idea of a failing state of agriculture is frightening when most people think about aspects of our lifestyle that need green innovation. Our dependence on the land for crops to provide food, and material for our clothing has been unceasing; however, it is a fundamental need that has always been answered, so we tend to take it for granted.

Now, problems with soil erosion, drought, inadequate farming equipment, and the use of harmful pesticides has created the need to find a way to preserve this resource that is at risk of being rendered useless.

Some living green innovations for agriculture include:

  • planting forage crops-the roots help to hold the soil together, provide ground cover, and retain runoff water.

  • farmers are using "no till" methods. Soil is fertilized without tilling the earth. Farming equipment is altered to adapt to new planting method.

A very unique eco-friendly innovation is helping to cut down on the use of harmful crop pesticides and also is being used for animal feed

  • In some foreign countries, ducks and goats are now being used to eat the weeds that proliferate in crops. This solution also allows the animals to feed at the same time that they provide weed control.

    Living Green Innovations in Energy

At the beginning of this lens I explained that I had probably incorrectly labeled some green innovations as green inventions. Well, let me put this living green innovation in it's rightful place!

Wind energy turbines are at the forefront of our oldest and most wonderful green innovations. Even one can produce enough electricity for over 1,000 average sized homes a year.

These monuments to alternative green energy have generated huge savings for houses and buildings in electricity costs, created new jobs, and served as a springboard for other living green innovations.

Hydroelectric, or water powered energy, is one of the living green innovations inspired by the wind turbines.

Water power, like wind energy, has been around for thousands of years. Water flow is usually stored in dams to structure the use of the electricity. Some dams have reservoirs so that water can be recirculated and reused again and again.

Geothermal steam energy is one of the most exciting living green innovations being used today.

The term geothermal means "earth heat". "Geo" is Greek for earth. Accumulated around the time of the dinosaur, this mass of dust and gas lies approximately 4000 miles underground, and can be as hot as 9000 degrees Fahrenheit. At it's highest degree, this heat helps to produce lava, hot springs and sometimes geysers. There is a greater portion, however, that saturates earth and porous rock, creating geothermal reservoirs.

Geothermal steam energy is a living green innovation with a great deal of potential. It has almost unlimited advantages over other forms of alternative energy.

The geothermal power plants are smaller, and sit directly on their sites. The steam it produces can be structured and regulated according to need. Also, unlike wind turbines and hydroelectric power, no other resources are needed for this green innovation to work. Because the geothermal steam can be used to cook, clean and heat naturally, there is little or no extra cost which makes it a wonderful green innovation for use in poor and underdeveloped countries.

    Living Green Innovations in Building

This impressive living green innovation is a LEED, ( Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), certified BP stainless steel gas station. A significant part of this structure is constructed from scrap of the old station that it replaced.

Solar panels provide the lighting power for this awesome living green innovation. The canopy roof is completely recyclable, and was designed for the panels to be easily removed and reused on another building if needed. Rainwater collected from the canopy is pumped into the landscaping, which is primarily made up of drought tolerant plants and bushes.

The station is equipped with recycling bins for paper, cans, bottles, and even cell phones.

Portions of the pavement and the bathroom flooring are made of recycled glass which reduce the amount of heat absorbed.

Unique "plant postcards" with actual seeds embedded into the fiber of the cards, decorate the station bays.

Living Green Innovation in the Water

lp</a>This fun green innovation is an electric body board that is made for play on the waves or under them! Ideal for swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving.

    This living green innovation:

  • uses 3 electric powered propellers for thrust.
  • comes in a variety of colors
  • is lightweight enough to carry in one hand.

  • Living Green Innovations in Art

Living green has opened up a whole new arena of innovation in the world of art. The picture at the right is a combination of acrylics and pure Himalayan sea salt mounted onto a piece of canvas.

Sculptures and works of art made of wood, glass, and assorted materials are commonplace now. Along with other natural resources like the salt in the picture above, any and all recycled items are the new art supplies of today.

Green art supplies are available now to. There are plant, soy, and oil based crayons, hemp sketch pads, and modeling clay made from beeswax.

    Why Living Green Is Innovative

I am not a creature that is comfortable with change. Living green is a lifestyle that I never would have thought of adapting to if the need had not become so inevitable. However, living green innovatively can be new and exciting in more ways than one.

I have discovered both interesting and exciting facts about positive things that man is doing to save the planet and themselves.

In my research I continue to lean about eco-friendly ideas and living green innovations that promise hope and a spirit of "never giving up".

As we implement these new living green innovations and eco-friendly inventions into our lives, we are able to move forward in education, research, job creation and most importantly, we are "moving on"-- in a positive and green direction.

Living green in an innovative way is the most productive way to live your life today. The future is green innovations.

Ah shucks! Mention of forthcoming squidcasts in your intro make me nostalgic. You pose an interesting question innovation versus invention. I take the opposite road, and that's okay!
