Green Kitty Litter Disposal Alternatives

Some flushable litters have been said to clog sewer lines and septic tanks. Some seem to be even more 'odoriferous' than other litters.

One other consideration with using flushing versus conventional litter is your cat's "opinion" of the litter itself. Many cats are so used to the regular texture and feel of clay that they will not use the flushing type. In this case, of course, the most important consideration is whether or not your cat will use the box at all. You should keep careful watch to see if you cat does or does not like the flushable litter.

If your cat happens to be infected with a bacteria such as Toxoplasmosis and you flush their litter this could possibly be causing an adverse affect on marine life.

This led me to question the safety of potty training your cat. No litter involved here.

Cat Potty Training books, videos, web sites and the like must address this question directly. Here's just one response. There is a short informational piece on Toxoplasmosis later in this lens, too.

How can you help to prevent it? How common is it really? Where does it come from? How can you keep your cat safe from it?

Q. What about toxoplasmosis?

Doogie says: Toxoplasmosis is a rare but serious disease that can be carried by infected cats (and other animals) and can affect pregnant women & other rvulnerable people. The regular litter tray presents a small but significant risk of infection and special care needs to be taken when dealing with it. We also don't recommend commencing the Litter Kwitter training if you are pregnant or nursing an infant. If you are in a vulnerable group please consult your GP for advice on cat ownership & dealing with their waste.

Q. Do all cats carry the toxoplasmosis bug?

Doogie says: No, they don't. In fact the disease is quite rare. There are some misconceptions here. The disease does not start in cats: cats can become infected only if they come into contact with the disease - by eating infected meat from wildlife for example. It is relatively difficult to become infected. However, if you have any concerns please check with your vet and your doctor before beginning the training.

As it says above in the EcoCycle quote: "Staff members at the wastewater treatment facility ask that you do not flush kitty litter-even those claiming to be biodegradable or flushable-since it may clog or damage your pipes as well as the pipes and equipment at the wastewater treatment plant. You could, however, flush just the fecal matter from a cat or a dog."

Can I "catch" toxoplasmosis from my cat?

Because cats only shed the organism for a few days in their entire life, the chance of human exposure is small. Owning a cat does not mean you will be infected with the disease. It is unlikely that you would be exposed to the parasite by touching an infected cat, because cats usually do not carry the parasite on their fur. It is also unlikely that you can become infected through cat bites or scratches. In addition, cats kept indoors that do not hunt prey or are not fed raw meat are not likely to be infected with T. gondii.

In the United States, people are much more likely to become infected through eating raw meat and unwashed fruits and vegetables than from handling cat feces.

What can I do to prevent toxoplasmosis?

There are several general sanitation and food safety steps you can take to reduce your chances of becoming infected with Toxoplasma:

* Do not eat raw or undercooked meat. Meat should be cooked to a temperature of at least 160°F for 20 minutes.
* Do not drink unpasteurized milk.
* Do not eat unwashed fruits and vegetables.
* Wash hands and food preparation surfaces with warm soapy water after handling raw meat.
* Wear gloves when gardening. Wash hands after gardening.
* Wash hands before eating (especially for children).
* Keep children's sandboxes covered.
* Do not drink water from the environment unless it is boiled.
* Do not feed raw meat or undercooked meat to cats. Also, do not give them unpasteurized milk.
* Do not allow cats to hunt or roam.
* Do not allow cats to use a garden or children's play area as their litter box.
* Remove feces from the litter box daily and clean with boiling or scalding water.
* Pregnant women, and persons with suppressed immune systems, should not clean the litter box.
* Control rodent populations and other potential intermediate hosts.

I have heard all kinds of stories about how people can get toxoplasmosis. What is the truth?
Neither people who own cats nor veterinarians have a significantly higher risk of being infected with T. gondii than the rest of the population.

In the United States, people are much more likely to become infected through eating raw meat than from handling cat feces. People also become infected by eating unwashed fruits and vegetables. Do not just focus on cats. It is unlikely you will become infected by petting an infected cat. The oocysts do not tend to stick to the fur like roundworm eggs might.

The cat, while grooming, would generally remove any oocysts on the fur, before they become infective. It is unlikely that you can become infected through cat bites or scratches.

"Some cat-related diseases that make people sick are common, such as cat scratch disease (or cat scratch fever), and others such as plague (play-g), are rare. Toxoplasmosis (TOX-o-plaz-MO-sis) is a disease that can come from cats, but people are more likely to get it from eating raw meat or from gardening. Cats can also carry rabies, a deadly viral disease.

Talk to your vet about how you can help your cat(s) prevent getting this and other diseases and how you and your family can prevent coming in contact with them.

Existing law requires an operator of a store, as defined, to establish an at-store recycling program that provides to customers the opportunity to return clean plastic carryout bags to that store. This requirement is repealed on January 1, 2013.

A violation of the enforcement provisions of the existing Fee Collection Procedures Law is a crime.

This bill would instead make those at-store recycling program requirements inoperative on July 1, 2011, and would repeal them on January 1, 2012, and would instead, on and after July 1, 2011, prohibit a store, as defined, from providing a plastic carryout bag to a customer.

The bill would require a store, on and after July 1, 2011, with regard to providing carryout bags to a customer at the point of sale, to either make reusable bags available for purchase by the customer or provide a paper carryout bag that is subject to the green bag fee that would be imposed by the bill.

The bill would require a store to charge a green bag fee of not less than $0.25 for each paper carryout bag distributed at the point of sale. The bill would establish the Paper Bag Pollution Cleanup Fund in the State Treasury and would require a store to remit these fees, less a specified amount, to the State Board of Equalization for deposit in that fund.
